The flavor is slightly warm. The taste is sweet. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats carbuncles, sores, and long-standing ulcerated wounds. It expels pus and relieves pain. It treats severe wind-rheumatism leprosy (leprosy). It treats five types of hemorrhoids and scrofula (tuberculous lymphadenitis of the neck). It tonifies deficiency. Astragalus Membranaceus Root (Huangqi), its qi is slightly warm. It inherits the ascending Shaoyang qi of spring. It enters the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian and the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao (Triple Burner) Meridian. Its taste is sweet and non-toxic, inheriting the peaceful Earth taste of the earth. It enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Both its qi and taste are ascending, which belongs to Yang. The Spleen governs muscles; the sweet taste can detoxify, and the warm nature can generate tissue. Therefore, it primarily treats carbuncles, sores, and long-standing ulcerated wounds, expelling pus and relieving pain. If Wind-Dampness-Heat obstructs the muscles and sinews, the sinews will deteriorate and flesh will rot, resulting in severe leprosy. The Spleen governs Dampness, the Gallbladder governs Wind, and the Sanjiao governs Heat. Where pathogenic factors gather, the body's Qi must be deficient. Astragalus Membranaceus Root is sweet and warm, tonifying Qi and Blood, thus treating leprosy. Intestinal disorders lead to hemorrhoids. The Large Intestine belongs to the Hand-Yangming Meridian. The Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian provides the motive force for the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian to transport fluids. Sweet and warm properties benefit the Spleen; when the Spleen functions normally, intestinal peristalsis resumes, and hemorrhoids heal. Scrofula refers to Luoli (scrofula). This is toxic heat constrained by Wind-Heat in the Shaoyang Meridian. Astragalus Membranaceus Root enters the Gallbladder and Sanjiao meridians; the sweet taste detoxifies, and the warm nature disperses constraint, thus treating this condition. Human deficiencies vary infinitely but fall into two categories: Qi and Blood. Astragalus Membranaceus Root has a sweet and warm flavor; its warm qi tonifies physical insufficiency, while its sweet taste nourishes essence insufficiency. Children possess young Yang. Young Yang is Shaoyang; when Shaoyang Sheng Qi flows freely and smoothly, what disease could children have? Astragalus Membranaceus Root enters the Shaoyang meridian to supplement the vital generating Qi, thereby generally treating all childhood diseases.
Preparation Formulas:
Astragalus Membranaceus Root combined with Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi), White Peony Root (Baishao), Licorice Root (Gancao), Ginger (Jiang), Jujube (Zao), and Maltose (Yi) is named Huangqi Jianzhong Decoction. It treats Spleen Yin Deficiency. Combined with Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi), White Peony Root (Baishao), Licorice Root (Gancao), and Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng), it treats spontaneous sweating due to Exterior Deficiency. Combined with Atractylodes Rhizome (Cangzhu) and Rehmannia Root (Shengdi) in equal parts, with Achyranthes Root (Niuxi) and Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai) halved, made into pills. It treats chronic ulcers caused by Damp-Toxin. Stir-fried with salt water, 5 qian of Astragalus Membranaceus Root, combined with 1 liang of Poria (Fuling), powdered. It treats white turbidity due to Qi Deficiency. Combined with Licorice Root (Gancao), it treats thirst due to deficiency. Combined with Hemp Seed (Huoren), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi), and White Honey (Baimi), it treats constipation due to deficiency in the elderly. Combined with Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian), it treats bloody stool due to Intestinal Wind. Combined with Ligusticum Rhizome (Chuanxiong) and Glutinous Rice (Nuomi), it treats fetal restlessness. Combined with Rehmannia Root (Shengdi), Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudi), Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Angelica Sinensis Root (Guishen), and Sour Jujube Seed (Suanzaoren), it treats night sweats due to Yin Deficiency. Combined with Rehmannia Root (Shengdi), Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudi), Angelica Sinensis Root (Guishen), Ginseng (Renshen), Sour Jujube Seed (Suanzaoren), and Schisandra Berry (Beiwei), it treats spontaneous sweating due to Exterior Deficiency. Combined with Ginseng (Renshen) and Licorice Root (Gancao), named Baoyuan Decoction. It treats Yang Deficiency and deficiency-type smallpox lesions.
