[Agriolimax]
Taste: salty. Nature: cold. Toxicity: non-toxic. Indications: Mainly treats hemiplegia caused by thief-wind (pathogenic wind), tendon dislocation, rectal prolapse, convulsive epilepsy, and muscle spasms. Also known as Lingli, Tuwo, or Fuwo. Grows in the ponds and marshes of Mount Tai and under shady sandy stone walls. Harvested in August.
Agriolimax has no shell and should not bear the name "wo" (snail). The one called "Fuwo" is also named Woniu (snail). Those growing in pond/marsh sands and stones are likely the current Shanwo (mountain snail). Perhaps because its head shape resembles that of a snail worm, the common name Woniu uses the character with the "melon" radical, thus the pronunciation of "wo" is also "gua". This refers to Zhuangzi's saying "war on the horn of a snail." Agriolimax falls within the limit of the Thirty-six Zodiac Animals and belongs to the category of four types of horned insects; it is considered the essence of Ying Shi star (Mars). Medical practitioners rarely use it now. (Da Guan Ben Cao, Vol. 21; Zheng He Ben Cao, p. 432)
[Qu Ge]
Taste: bitter, salty. Nature: neutral. Toxicity: non-toxic. Indications: Mainly treats cough with rebellious qi, wheezing, chest fullness and oppression, chest pain, alternating chills and fever, and impotence. Also known as Kui Ge. Grows in the East Sea. (Shuqi acts as its guide drug; it fears dog gallbladder and is incompatible with Gan Sui and Yuan Hua.)
This medicinal material is of good quality if it is fine like Jusheng (Sesamum indicum), moist, lustrous, and clean; those coarse like half an apricot kernel are not used for medicine. (Da Guan Ben Cao, Vol. 20; Zheng He Ben Cao, p. 416)
[Hai Ge]
Taste: salty. Nature: neutral. Toxicity: non-toxic. Indications: Mainly treats malignant sores and erodes five types of hemorrhoids. Treats cough with rebellious qi, chest bi syndrome, lower back pain with rib hypochondriac stiffness, shu lou (scrofula), bleeding from the large intestine, metrorrhagia and leukorrhea. Grows in the East Sea, has patterns on the surface, and can be harvested at any time.
Hai Ge is extremely moist and glossy. It is said that obtaining it from goose droppings and washing/polishing it twenty or thirty times makes it excellent. Nowadays, people mostly take ordinary shells and polish them to resemble this. Wen Ge varies in size and has purple spots. Although these are different species but belong to the same category, if distinguished separately, there are many. Now they are listed as an appendix and classified as secondary grade. There are four such items in total. (Da Guan Ben Cao, Vol. 20; Zheng He Ben Cao, p. 416)
[Cyprinus carpio Gallbladder]
Taste: bitter. Nature: cold. Toxicity: non-toxic. Indications: Mainly treats eye heat, redness, and pain, qing mang (blindness), and improves vision. Long-term consumption strengthens the body and enhances willpower. Meat: Taste sweet. Mainly treats cough with rebellious qi, jaundice, and stops thirst. Fresh meat mainly treats edema and leg swelling, and directs qi downward. Bone: Mainly treats red and white vaginal discharge in women. Teeth: Mainly treats stone lin (urinary calculi). Grows in the ponds and marshes of Jiujiang, harvestable at any time.
The carp is the leader among fish. Its form is lovely, and it possesses magical transformations, even flying over lakes and mountains, which is why Qin Gao rode it. (Da Guan Ben Cao, Vol. 20; Zheng He Ben Cao, p. 419)
