[Lishi]
Taste is sweet, nature is neutral and warm, non-toxic. It treats skin chills and heat, stomachal heat, wind-cold-dampness Bi syndrome (a condition caused by the invasion of wind, cold, and damp pathogens into the meridians and joints), and strengthens bones and tendons. It increases appetite.
It stops mental restlessness and fullness, promotes urination and defecation, and promotes muscle growth and plumpness. Long-term use makes the body light and agile. Flowers and leaves: eliminate white intestinal worms, treat throat obstruction (swelling and blockage of the throat), and excessive consumption causes loose stools. Also known as Lishi, Jucuo, Sanjian, and Shishou. Grows in valleys of Hedong. Fruits are harvested in May and dried in shade. (This medicinal material is no longer used in prescriptions; it is unrecognized by people today. Tianmingjing is also called Shishou.) (Da Guan Bencao Vol. 8, Zhenghe Bencao p. 202)
[Mudan/Hemu]
Taste is bitter, nature is cold and very cold, non-toxic. It treats evil qi in the five zang organs, stomachal heat, facial redness, rhinophyma (rosacea), white leprosy, and red leprosy. It treats sores and ulcers.

It is found everywhere, with two or three varieties having slight differences; those with seven ridges are considered superior. They should be harvested after frost. Currently, they are mostly used for dyeing and rarely in medicine. Yuzhi is Yang...
[Binglang]
Taste is pungent, nature is warm, non-toxic. It aids digestion of grains, expels water retention, eliminates phlegm, kills three types of parasites (roundworms, pinworms, tapeworms), removes latent corpses (parasites or stagnant blood lurking in the body), and treats tapeworms. Grows in the Nanhai region.
There are three or four varieties here: those from Jiaozhou are small in shape and sweet in taste; those south of Guangzhou are large in shape, astringent in taste, and have large seeds; the particularly large ones are called Chubinglang, all of which are used in medicine. The smaller ones are called [missing character] zi by Southerners, and commonly referred to as Binglang Sun by the world; they can also be eaten. (Xinxiu Bencao p. 134, Da Guan Bencao Vol. 13, Zhenghe Bencao p. 319)
[Hehuan]
Taste is sweet, nature is neutral, non-toxic. Its main function is to calm the five zang organs, harmonize the mind and spirit, and make one joyful and free from worry. Long-term use makes the body light and agile, improves vision, and fulfills desires. Grows in valleys of Yizhou.
Ji Kang also stated in his "Lun on Nourishing Life": Hehuan dispels anger, and Xuancao forgets sorrow. Poets mention Xuancao, saying it is the same as the current Luchong, but it is not used in medicine. As for Hehuan, no one in the world recognizes it. This is likely because it lacks curative efficacy for diseases, leading to its neglect and eventual disappearance. It is similar to methods of longevity; since few people pursue them, they are abandoned. In the Hualin Garden in Luoyang, it is said that Hehuan trees grow like clusters of Dingxiang, but they do not extend to Jiangzuo. (Xinxiu Bencao p. 134, Da Guan Bencao Vol. 13, Zhenghe Bencao p. 332)
