This is the copper crossbow trigger (tongnu ya) used by people today. It is taken, heated until red-hot, and placed in wine; the juice is drunk, or it can be added to prescriptions. Its efficacy is superior to ancient methods due to more intricate carving and craftsmanship. (From *Xinxiu Bencao* p. 77, *Daguan Bencao* Vol. 5, *Zhenghe Bencao* p. 133)
It is currently produced in Shu-Han regions. It resembles coarse gold but is square or round like a chess piece. There are also copper triggers that look similar, but their exterior color is black and interior slightly lighter; these are not used for medicinal purposes. Gold triggers are only combined with wine, powders, and Wuzhu Wan (Five Leeching Pills); other prescriptions rarely require this. (From *Xinxiu Bencao* p. 77, *Daguan Bencao* Vol. 5, *Zhenghe Bencao* p. 133)
Taste: Pungent (Xin). Nature: Warm. Indications: Carbuncles and sores (juyang), scabies and itching (saosao), heat qi, malignant ulcers, leprosy-like diseases (laji), necrotic tissue (simi), loss of eyebrows, killing hemorrhoid worms, removing black spots and polyps. Treats osteomyelitis (suiguju). Also known as Ehui (Evil Ash), also known as Xihui. Grows in the valleys and mountains of Zhongshan.
Zhongshan belongs to Dai Commandery. Currently, stones found near the mountains are bluish-white. After being used to build a stove and burned, pouring water on them causes steam to rise and the material to disintegrate into powder. Its nature is extremely acrid/potent. If humans use it to soak wine and drink it, it causes abdominal pain and dysentery. However, it is very effective for treating metal wounds (jinchuang). The world calls it Shi'e (Stone Lime). In ancient and modern times, it is often used to construct tombs to repel water and insects. Therefore, water from ancient tombs, when used to wash various malignant ulcers, heals them immediately. (From *Xinxiu Bencao* p. 78, *Daguan Bencao* Vol. 5, *Zhenghe Bencao* p. 123)
This is the yellow ash (huanghui) used for washing clothes today, refined from accumulated mugwort and chenopodium species. Its nature is potent, and reed ash (digui) is even more so. To eliminate black moles and warts, take these three types... (From *Zhenghe Bencao* p. 132)
This is the ash from iron-smelting stoves, which incorporates the power of iron. It is effective for treating acute edema/water retention (baozhengshui). It is used in Erche Wan (Two-Car Pill). (From *Xinxiu Bencao* p. 79, *Daguan Bencao* Vol. 5, *Zhenghe Bencao* p. 134)
This is the yellow earth located under the pot in the stove. When taken, pounded, sifted, and mixed with wild garlic (hushu) to apply to carbuncles, it is very effective. Because it is believed that there is a spirit in the stove, it is named Fulonggan (Dragon Liver Hidden in the Stove); this is also an indirect and euphemistic name for it. (From *Xinxiu Bencao* p. 79, *Daguan Bencao* Vol. 5, *Zhenghe Bencao* p. 122)
