Jingquanshi (Well Spring Stone)
The nature is greatly cold, and it is non-toxic. It grows everywhere in the vicinity, (those from Raoyang Commandery are superior.) It is found only within field lands. One must dig about a zhang (approx. 3.3 meters) deep to obtain it. Its shape resembles Tuhuang (Earth Yellow), varying in square, round, long, and short forms, with unequal sizes; internally it is solid and firm, while externally it is layered, overlapping and interlacing. There is no fixed time for harvesting, but it must be ground extremely fine. If not done so, it may cause patients to suffer from Lin syndrome (a disease characterized by frequent, scanty, and painful urination). It is best for resolving heat accumulation in the Heart, and also excellent for stopping heat coughs in the Lung meridian. Combined with Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome) and Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), it treats sudden swelling and edema of the eyelids; combined with Juemingzi (Cassia Seed) and Juhua (Chrysanthemum Flower), it treats eye malnutrition diseases (Yan Gan) where pterygium or corneal opacity suddenly appears. It generally governs various heat conditions, having no other special capabilities.
Huaruishi (Flower Stamen Stone)
It is extremely large, hard, and heavy, originating from Shanzhou. Its color resembles Liuhuang (Sulfur), yellow with white spots in between. Hence named Huaruishi, it is hardest to obtain as genuine. After obtaining it, grind it into powder frost; it is miraculous for treating various blood disorders. For men, mix half with Tongbian (Child's Urine) and half with wine; for women, mix half with Tongbian and half with vinegar. Taking more will make the body unobstructed, and stasis blood will gradually transform into yellow fluid. Indeed, it is a drastic medicine, truly a rapid prescription. For Jinchuang (metal weapon wounds) with bleeding, applying it causes the wound to close. For postpartum blood fainting, licking the powder brings immediate peace.
Qingmengshi (Green Meng Stone)
Its color is slightly green, originating from Shandong. To distinguish fake from real, one must process it according to method. Crush it into small granules, store them in a silver jar. Add half Yanxiao (Calcined Mirabilite), (two liang of stone, two liang of salt). Seal firmly with Yanni (Salt Mud). Roast over vigorous fire for the duration of one incense stick. Take out when the color resembles Cihuang (Realgar). It should become soft and brittle, easy to pound, to confirm it is genuine. Grind into powder using the water-flying method, enter medicine as powder or pill. Its power can drop phlegm, thus it is essential in Gutan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill); its function also aids digestion, thus it is often added to Jishi Fang (Food Accumulation Formulas). Not only do doctors use it for children, it also treats male and female ailments.
Huashi (Talcum)
The taste is sweet, the nature is greatly cold. Its property is heavy, descending, and yin. It is non-toxic. It is abundant everywhere, with no fixed harvesting time. Fine, pure white pieces are superior; coarse, stubborn, dark green-black pieces should not be used. Grind finely and purify using the water-flying method; only then does it provide smooth and unobstructed effects when taken. It is adverse to Zengqing (Azurite), and suitable to be paired with Gancao (Licorice Root). Shiwei (Pyrrosia Leaf) acts as its guide drug, entering the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. It benefits the nine orifices, causing fluids to generate frequently; it moves stagnation in the six fu organs without obstruction. It expels coagulated blood and resolves thirst and vexation; it separates water pathways to fill the Large Intestine. It eliminates food toxicity and tonifies Spleen qi, drains upward-rebellious qi and descends fire. Because of this slippery nature, the name "Slippery" (Hua) is added. It induces abortion like a divine effect; pregnant women should avoid taking it.
(Mo) Commentary: Huashi treats thirst, not because it directly stops thirst. Rather, relying on its ability to benefit orifices and seep out damp-heat, the Spleen qi returns to harmony, and thirst naturally ceases. If the heavenly climate has excessive dampness invading, and a person suffers from difficult urination accompanied by thirst, it is exactly appropriate to use this herb to seep and drain, and thirst will naturally not arise. If there is no dampness, and urination is free yet thirst exists, one knows there is internal dryness-heat. Dryness requires moistening; if mistakenly used, this would further deplete body fluids, and thirst would instead intensify. Would this not be violating the contraindications!
