Taste: bitter, salty. Nature: cold. Non-toxic. Also known as Yelan (Wild Orchid), the stem is thick like sinew. The leaves resemble Baihao (Artemisia argyi) and have pods; the flowers bloom at the tip of the pod with a yellow color. The seeds form chambers similar to sesame oil seeds, and the roots grow like turnips, being fine and black. Those produced in Danzhou (belonging to Shanxi) are superior. The roots should be harvested in August and dried in the shade. Processing must follow standard procedures; deviation will result in inefficacy. Chew into thin slices, steam relative to Licorice Root (Gancao); from Si hour to Shen hour, check that the Licorice Root is clean before use. (From *Leigong Paozhi*.) Used with Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao) as an guiding herb, acting on the Foot-Yangming Meridian. Treats body wind-heat causing malignant sores, removes skin itching and urticaria. Primarily treats breast abscesses and back carbuncles, regulates hemorrhoids and intestinal wind. Nourishes blood and expels pus, generates flesh and promotes tissue growth. Guides the meridians, promotes lactation, reconnects bones and tendons, treats fractures and injuries. Stops enuresis and seminal emission, eliminates wind-eye damp-bi. Not only for decoction drinking, but also made into bathing decoctions. Long-term consumption benefits qi, lightens the body, clarifies ears and eyes, prevents aging.

Taste: sweet. Nature: warm. Non-toxic. Grows abundantly in field ditches or garden walls. It does not wither in winter, hence its name. It climbs trees, with vines mostly winding to the left. Hence also known as Zuochanteng (Left-Winding Vine). The stems are square, slender, slightly purple; leaves resemble Ficus pumila (Bili) and are green. Flowers in April, with a strong fragrance. Initially white when blooming, turning yellow after a long time. Therefore also known as Jinyinhua (Gold-Silver Flower), Lusiteng (Egret Vine), Jinchaigu (Gold Hairpin Thigh), Laowengxu (Old Man's Beard). For those with multiple names, the former praises the abnormality of the vine, while the latter praises the excellence of the flower. Roots, stems, flowers, and leaves are harvested according to season. (Harvest flowers and leaves in spring and summer; harvest roots and stems in autumn and winter.) Specifically treats carbuncles and ulcers, truly an essential medicine. When unformed, it dissipates, possessing great detoxifying power; when formed, it suppurates, having significant life-saving strength. Alternatively, crush to extract juice mixed with wine for immediate drinking, or grind into paste mixed with wine for thick application. Or decoct with other medicines, taking effect according to the severity of the condition. *Bieshuo* further states: primarily treats five types of Feishi (Flying Corpse parasites); if pain occurs from ghost strikes, it can also be taken. Treats bloody dysentery and watery dysentery simultaneously. Eliminates wind-dampness and dampness. Long-term consumption by the elderly lightens the body and extends lifespan.
(Chen Jiamo) Note: This herb is abundant and produced everywhere. Patients suffering from carbuncles and toxins do not neglect it; the elderly seeking longevity certainly take it. Moreover, everyone desires longevity, yet they refuse to act on what is easiest to obtain, instead seeking rare drugs from distant places. This is valuing the distant and despising the near, a sentiment of mediocre people and a common custom.
