Ge Gen (Kudzu Root) from Chengzhou:
Ge Gen (Kudzu Root) from Haizhou:
The Ge Gen (Kudzu Root) vines spiral and grow long. Leaves emerge in early spring, and roots are harvested after autumn. Roots that penetrate deep into the soil possess potent efficacy; removing the peel ensures rapid therapeutic effects. It neutralizes the toxicity of wild kudzu, croton seeds, and various hundred poisons. It enters the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian and travels along its pathway. It treats Taiyang disease (diseases of the Taiyang channel), releases the exterior, and resolves muscle-layer pathogens; it treats Lung dryness, generates body fluids, and relieves thirst. It resolves alcohol intoxication and sudden poisoning, and dispels warm malaria characterized by alternating chills and fever. It dissipates external sores and rashes, alleviates pain; it raises Middle Jiao Stomach Qi and clears heat. The flowers prevent drunkenness when consumed. The shell treats dysentery and consolidates the intestines. Freshly squeezed juice from the root is extremely cold in nature, specifically managing epidemic seasonal diseases. It stops vomiting and epistaxis caused by heat-toxin, removes heat-dryness, and eliminates Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst syndrome).
It revives women suffering from heat-induced oppression and stifling sensation, and resolves pediatric heat-stagnation causing epigastric fullness. Ge Fen (Kudzu Powder) is sweet and cold; it is suitable for consumption after drunkenness. It eliminates vexing heat and promotes bowel movements, suppresses toxicity from Dan Shi (mineral drugs), and antidotes the poison of turtle doves. Crushed leaves applied externally treat metal weapon injuries.
Burnt ash of the vine treats Hou Bi (obstruction of the throat).
Wei Ling Xian (Clematis Root) from Shizhou:
Wei Ling Xian (Clematis Root) from Ninghua Jun:
Wei Ling Xian (Clematis Root) is a herbaceous plant with square stems and opposite leaves. The flowers are pale green, and the roots are dense and thick. Roots are harvested in winter and shade-dried. Processing should be selected on Bing, Ding, Wu, or Ji days. Remove the rhizome (Lu), wash with wine, and avoid soaking in tea or flour water. It eliminates chronic phlegm-fluid retention in the diaphragm and removes Pi Qi (abdominal masses due to qi stagnation). It disperses wind-induced itching and pain in nails and skin, and benefits the waist, knees, and ankles by draining dampness and relieving cold pain caused by damp infiltration. Its nature is inherently mobile, capable of circulating through the Twelve Meridians, making it an essential herb for treating various rheumatic cold-pain conditions. It also expels Zheng Jia (abdominal masses) and is particularly effective for traumatic injuries. It is strictly contraindicated for deficient patients, as excessive use depletes True Qi.
Qin Jiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Root) from Shizhou:
Qin Jiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Root) from Ninghua Jun:
Taste is bitter and acrid; nature is neutral and slightly warm. It can ascend and descend, belonging to Yang within Yin. It is non-toxic. It originates from Gansong Longdong and various prefectures in He and Shan. Large, yellowish-white specimens are superior, and those with new growth and distinct ring patterns are especially excellent. Use Chang Pu (Acorus Tatarinowii Rhizome) as a guiding herb; it enters the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian. It nourishes blood and enriches sinews, dispels wind-bi causing pain throughout the limbs and joints, promotes bowel movement, and promotes urination to leach out dampness. It dissipates Jaundice (Huang Dan), resolving the golden-yellow discoloration of the whole body, clears Head Wind, and resolves alcohol toxicity. It stops intestinal wind bleeding and eliminates bone-steaming fever and infectious tuberculosis (Chuan Shi).
