Tusk of Elephant (Xiangya)
Nature is neutral, non-toxic. Originates from various foreign lands; the tusk begins to grow only after five years of gestation. The color is greenish; those from Xizhu (India) are white. Kept by the imperial court, they serve to guard the forbidden gates. (Elephants detest loud noises and can discern human righteousness and wrongness. (When encountering litigants in disputes, an elephant sniffs them while walking or standing; if the person is in the right, it lets them pass; if in the wrong, it coils its trunk around them, throws them several feet into the air, catches them with its tusks, and pierces them. This is recorded in *Annanzhi*.) Tusks grow on both sides of the mouth, hanging down flanking the nose; newly born ones are difficult to compete for and use, requiring fake ivory to substitute for real. (White wood is used to make fakes.) In medicinal preparations, old ivory is superior. (Old ivory combs and various utensils are excellent.) Scraped into powder and ground fine, mixed with water, it treats iron splinters embedded in flesh miraculously. For splinters stuck in the throat, mix with water and drink; for splinters embedded in flesh, mix with water and apply externally. Taken raw after decoction, it can relieve urinary retention and strangury; taken as ash mixed with water, it stops excessive urination. The gallbladder does not attach to the liver but exists at any time in the four legs. In spring, it is in the left front leg; in summer, in the right front leg, visible only there. In autumn, in the left hind leg; in winter, in the right hind leg, found there. Mixed with water and applied to the eyes, it stops eye pain; mixed with water and bound around sores, it reduces swelling. Elephant meat corresponds to the twelve earthly branches, and the I Ching images are named thereby. (*Shennong Bencao Jing* also states: The elephant's body possesses the meat nature of a hundred beasts.) Cooked and eaten freely, it causes the body to become heavy. (Should be eaten sparingly.) Ground into powder and taken with decoction, various epilepsy diseases recover easily. The small transverse bone on the chest, when burned to ash and taken with wine, enables one to float and submerge in water. The tip of the nose has claws, sharp enough to thread a needle; the sole of the hoof resembles rhinoceros horn, with patterns suitable for making belts. Ears resemble drum skin. A single stab kills it; this must be recognized.
Stalk of White Horse (Baima Jing)
Flavor is sweet and salty, nature is neutral. Non-toxic. Found everywhere, those from Yunzhong are best. Fur colors vary, pure white being superior. Select young colts that are vigorous, harvested alive in spring. (Those taken from dead old horses are ineffective.) Hang on walls to dry in the shade, ensuring a full hundred days. Split into seven pieces with a copper knife, mix with sheep blood, and steam for three shichen (6 hours). Dry thoroughly, wipe clean with coarse cloth, (removing the upper epidermis and dried sheep blood.) Pound together with Cistanche in equal parts. (Equal proportions.) Form into pills the size of beans, take on an empty stomach with wine. *Yaoxing Lun* once stated: It is particularly desired in sexual arts, augmenting yin qi and hardening the yang stalk. It reconnects severed pulses, treating internal injuries; lengthens flesh and bones, making one fat and strong.
Meat flavor is bitter, pungent, slightly toxic, capable of strengthening the waist and spine, and growing tendons. However, meat from self-deceased elephants or those with mixed/special fur colors, (such as white bodies with black heads,) or those with arm ulcers and hooves lacking "night eyes," especially meat under the saddle, should be discarded and not eaten. Good quality meat should be taken with strong wine (without wine, it may cause harm). Eating too much causes heart stuffiness, which requires clear wine to resolve, (but too much wine worsens it.) Pregnant women, those with dysentery, and those with sores are forbidden to consume it; fresh ginger, stored rice, and Xanthium fruit are taboo to take simultaneously. Caution brings no worry; violating taboos leads to illness. Removing elephant eyes treats abdominal fullness and malaria; killing the elephant to obtain eyes is appropriate. Teeth treat pediatric convulsive epilepsy, ground in water and drunk immediately. Mane burned to ash, applied to sores, stops bleeding; teeth burned to ash, applied to swellings, draws out roots. Skull treats male somnolence, keeping one awake; (suitable as a pillow.) Hoof nails regulate female leukorrhea, stopping flow immediately. (Red horse hooves correspond to red leukorrhea.) Suspended hooves can also be decocted, serving as an important medicine for toothache. It repels evil qi and ghostly infections, and facilitates lactation difficulties; it removes spasms and evil spirits, and stops epistaxis. Bone spicules embedded in skin are incurable; blood entering muscle tissue causes death. Heart treats forgetfulness; lungs treat chills and fever. Liver is toxic and must be discarded; milk quenches thirst and is sought after. Fat is soft, does not harden metals; paste applied to baldness promotes hair regrowth. Hair treats convulsive epilepsy with verified efficacy; hide stops metrorrhagia and leukorrhea with frequent effectiveness. Feces named Matong, is also forbidden for various bleeding conditions. Urine collected in copper vessels can wash white tinea capitis. Male fuliang accumulation and hernia show special merit; female zhengjian accumulations show extreme efficacy. Furthermore, regarding biejiab masses, it also resolves thirst and digestion. Tether rope broken...
