Wild Langdu (Metaplexis japonica)
Taste: Pungent. Nature: Neutral. Highly toxic. Produced in Junzhou, Shaanxi. The seedlings and leaves resemble those of Phytolaccae Radix (Shanglu). Roots are harvested in August; the flesh is white and the skin yellow. Those that are heavy and solid are superior (they sink immediately when placed in water), while those that are light and hollow are inferior. Processed with Black Soybean (Heidouda); incompatible with Maijujiang (Polygoni Multiflori Caulis). Breaks up accumulations, phlegm-stagnation, and mass disorders; eliminates malignant sores, rat abscesses, and carbuncles. Drives away coughing, wheezing, and rebellious Qi; kills gu poison and evil spirits. It is potent enough to kill wild beasts and birds.
Yin Yang Huo from Yongkang Army
Yin Yang Huo from Yizhou
(Also known as Xianlingpi) Taste: Pungent. Nature: Cold. Non-toxic. Stems are slender and firm; leaves are round and thin. Grown everywhere, it does not wither in winter, commonly called "Three-branch Nine-leaf Grass." The best quality comes from places where no sound of flowing water is heard. For preparation, it must first be soaked in wine and then sun-dried. Chopped and stir-fried with Mutton Fat (Yangzhi) (using four taels of mutton fat per jin of herb), until the fat is fully absorbed. Because goats greedily eat this plant, it has become famous. Treats male impotence (Jueyang); treats female infertility due to Jueyin deficiency. Delays aging, cures senile confusion and dementia, removes mid-life forgetfulness. Benefits bones, strengthens sinews, increases strength, and stabilizes willpower. Long-term use causes harm, as clearly stated in the *Shennong Bencao Jing*.
Yang Zhizhu (Rhododendron molle)
Taste: Pungent. Nature: Warm. Highly toxic. Grows in sunny valleys, sprouting in spring. Plants grow over one chi high, budding after the middle of the second lunar month. Leaves are deep green like peach leaves; flowers are bright yellow like melon flowers. Goats die after stumbling about upon mistakenly eating it. Hence, the *Shennong Bencao Jing* names it Yang Zhizhu; people in the south now also call it Huang Dujuguan (Yellow Azalea). Flowers are harvested according to season, dried in shade, and used medicinally. Mainly treats wind-dampness hidden in muscles causing bi-syndrome numbness; treats wandering pain caused by thief-wind in the skin. Treats ghost-casting diseases and gu poison together; drives out epidemic malaria and malignant toxins.

Kills various parasites, removes gu poison, eliminates necrotic tissue, and heals malignant carbuncles. Treats obstruction of the throat (Houbi). Regulates upward congestion of wind-phlegm.
