Honeycomb of the Wild Bee (Lufengfang)
Bitter, salty, neutral in nature. Non-toxic. Grows in mountains everywhere, mostly nesting on trees. Collected on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month and dried in the shade. Remove the coarse outer wrapping, use the inner honeycomb layers, roast until dry. Adverse with Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao), Ostreae Concha (Muli), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang), and Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Danshen). Mainly treats epilepsy (mental disorder), gu poison (parasitic or toxic disease), and gui jing (evil spirits causing illness); treats jing xian (pediatric convulsions), yong zhong (limb twitching), and alternating chills and fever. Resolves bee venom and breast abscess (redness and swelling of the breast); eliminates both bloody dysentery and white dysentery. Decocted in water and taken as juice to treat toothache; mixed with wine and taken as ash to treat impotence. For scrofula (tuberculous lymphadenitis of the neck) ulcerated into holes, grind into powder and mix with lard for topical application to heal; for unresolved carbuncles and swellings, grind with strong vinegar for topical application to be effective. After febrile diseases, if toxic vapors熏 (smoke/fume) the eyes, decoct in water and wash frequently.
Wulingzhi
Sweet, neutral in nature. Non-toxic. Produced in Hedong Commandery and Zhou, it is the feces of the cold-number bird (Auroch's relative/night monkey). Shape resembles iron pieces mixed with sand and gravel, washed with wine specifically for treating gynecological diseases. To promote blood circulation, use raw; to stop bleeding, must stir-fry. Unblocks amenorrhea, and treats menorrhagia (prolonged menstrual bleeding); removes heart pain, and treats stabbing pain due to blood and qi stagnation. Drives out bloody dysentery and intestinal wind (hematochezia), expels cold qi from the heart and abdomen. Stabilizes postpartum blood fainting (dizziness and fainting due to blood loss after childbirth), eliminates pediatric malnutrition and roundworms.
Anlougu
Salty, cold in nature. Non-toxic. Some say toxic. Lives in earth burrows, appears at Start of Summer. Wings are short and cannot fly far, croaking only at night. The "Monthly Ordinances" refers to the croaking of lou guo as this insect. Commonly called "earth dog" because its shape resembles a dog. Obtain it, roast over gentle fire until yellow, grind into fine powder for medicinal use. Treats ten types of edema with immediate effect, dividing efficacy by upper/lower and left/right. Left swelling resolves on the left, right swelling recedes on the right. Upper body reduces upper edema, lower body reduces lower jiao edema. Also said: From the waist downwards promotes urination and defecation, being the essential medicine for urinary and fecal retention. From the waist upwards astringes, being a convenient prescription for stopping diarrhea and frequent urination. If removing splinters embedded in flesh, take much brain matter and apply topically. Still treats mouth ulcers and breast toxins, grinding with wine and taking orally can cure. Those with deficiency should strictly avoid using it, due to its urgent/pungent nature.
