In the southern mountains of Yongxing Army, this plant is very abundant. Consuming it resolves excess heat (Shi Re), but excessive intake causes coldness in the viscera and diarrhea. It ripens fully in the tenth month, appearing pale green, while unripe fruits are extremely sour. The seeds are numerous and fine, resembling mustard seeds in color. The branches are tender, reaching two or three zhang in height, often growing by clinging to trees. Those in shallow mountains near roads remain, whereas those in deep mountains are mostly eaten by monkeys.
Walnuts (Juglandis Fructus) can induce wind disorders. They are very common between Shaanxi and Luoyang. An outer green skin covers the walnut, which is the nut itself. The kernel inside the shell is the walnut meat. Although described thus, when used medicinally, one must peel off the thin skin on the meat using hot water. After the Summer Solstice, they are unsuitable for consumption. Some suffer from alcohol-induced wind disease (Jiu Feng), characterized by redness on the nose; they lightly stir-fry orange seeds (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium seed residue), grind them into powder, take one qianbi (ancient measure) each time, crush one walnut meat, mix them together, and administer with warm wine, stopping when effective.
The canopy of large walnut trees can reach a zhang in height, though physicians rarely use them nowadays. Eating the fruit with Jiangshui (fermented grain liquid) induces cholera-like symptoms due to its astringent nature. Currently, a variety from Xiaoyao Town within the capital's jurisdiction is of the best quality and suitable for tribute. There is also the Imperial Plum (Yuzi Li), about the size of a cherry, reddish-yellow, ripening before other plums. There are many varieties of plums, yet they grow everywhere under heaven. Thus, the virtuous conduct of scholars and officials is compared to plums and peaches, as their fragrance is ubiquitous elsewhere. Another edition notes: "There are wild plums, bitter in taste, named Yuzi Li, whose kernels enter medicine." This refers to Prunus japonica kernel (Yuzi Ren), a different species recorded in Volume 14 of the Wood Section, not wild plums.
Excessive consumption disturbs Spleen Qi, while insufficient amounts fail to treat illness. One must exercise caution when using pears for therapy. Only those suffering from alcohol-induced irritability and thirst find them beneficial, yet they ultimately cannot eradicate the disease.
They are abundant in Xiluo and belong to the pear category, resembling pears in shape, ripening earlier than other pears, and edible around the Qixi Festival. Their color is yellow like goose pears (E Li); upon ripening, they become soft, but are rarely used in medicine.
Pomegranates come in sour and mild-sweet varieties. Flowers bloom singly with leaves emerging simultaneously, bearing fruit with red seeds inside. Many lateral branches appear. After autumn rains, the fruit naturally splits. Daoists call it "Sanshi Wine," claiming that the Three Corpses (San Shi) become intoxicated by this fruit. He-yin County has the most abundance. Another variety features seeds white and crystal-clear like rock crystal, also sweet in taste, called Crystal Pomegranate (Shuijing Shiliu). Only the peel of sour pomegranates combined with purgatives is effective, preferably from old trees and stored for a long time. Lightly roasted and ground into powder, formed into pills the size of wutong seeds using cooked millet rice paste. Take 30 to 50 pills before meals with hot rice water, adjusting until effective. If cold and slippery symptoms occur, add equal parts of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) and Halloysit Rubrum (Chishizhi).
