This entry is recorded in the Tan Spring water north of Li County, Nanyang Commandery, where the source of the water is entirely fragrant. Chrysanthemums grow on the cliffs, and the water takes on the taste of chrysanthemum; this claim is very strange. Moreover, chrysanthemums grow on floating soil, with roots no deeper than a chi (approx. 33 cm). Among all flowers, their root system is particularly shallow and exposed. In contrast, spring water usually comes from deep sources. Furthermore, chrysanthemum roots have no fragrance, and the flowering period is only between the ninth and tenth lunar months, lasting merely three weeks. How could the fragrance enter the water? If it were due to the flowers, how should we explain the months when there are no flowers? This is not detailed at all. Water naturally has sweet, bland, salty, and bitter tastes; how do we know that some waters do not have a chrysanthemum taste? I once served as an official between Yongzhou and Yaozhou. Following a dry path to the ancient stone canal at the foot of Beishan in Hongmen, I found the spring water clear and transparent. The officials scooped and drank it. Its taste was equal to that of Huishan spring water, also possessing a faint fragrance. People of the world generally did not know this; it is especially suitable for brewing tea. From this, we can know that the quality of spring water is such, and it is not because the chrysanthemums growing on floating soil can change the taste of the spring water. Learned scholars should examine this matter carefully.
Jiangshui (fermented grain liquid) should not be consumed together with plums, as this will cause people to suffer from cholera-like symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea.
It assists Yang Qi and promotes the circulation of meridians. For those suffering from wind-cold qi bi syndrome, hot water is often used to soak the feet up to the knees, covered thickly, to induce sweating throughout the body. However, even with other medicines, they ultimately rely on the thermal energy of the hot water to facilitate their action. In cases of sudden diarrhea in any season, accompanied by cold limbs and pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, sitting in deep hot water, immersed up to the abdomen, performed frequently, can assist yang-nourishing medicines; there is nothing faster than this. People with deficiency-cold constitutions will inevitably shiver when first sitting in the hot water, so it is customary to have someone watch over them.
If gold or silver is counterfeit, when thrown into a melting furnace, the fake substances will completely dissipate. Similarly, since the human abdomen contains long-standing accumulations, this substance can disperse and resolve stagnation. When combined with other herbs to treat eye nebulae (cataracts/opacities), it must be processed using the water-trituration method (Shuifei), placed in a porcelain vessel, and heated in a double-boiler setup until self-dried, to reduce its toxicity and remove dust and impurities.
Hold in the mouth to dissolve and swallow the saliva to treat soreness and swelling of the throat, and phlegm-heat above the diaphragm. If treated at the first sign of discomfort, it prevents the formation of throat obstruction (Houbi) and can slowly achieve therapeutic effects. Those from Southern Fan have a dark brown color, a mild taste, and rapid efficacy. Those from Western Rong are white in color, have a scorched/bitter taste, act slowly, and are unsuitable for use as soldering material.
