The belly is yellow, and the world calls it *Monopterus albus* (Yellow Eel). This creature particularly stirs up wind-pathogenic qi; excessive consumption causes Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome with vomiting and diarrhea), a phenomenon frequently observed. Previously, when I was in the capital, a neighbor who was a Langguan (an official title) ate yellow eel and subsequently suffered from Huoluan, experiencing vomiting and diarrhea, nearly reaching a state of collapse and prostration. There is also the white eel (*Anguilla japonica*), which is slightly thicker and larger, with a white color. Both species lack scales. The larger ones are over one chi long. Their shape resembles that of a snake, but they cannot walk on land; nevertheless, both can induce wind. West of Jiangling Prefecture lies a lake named West Lake. Every year during summer and autumn, when the water level of the Ju River rises, the lake water overflows; by winter, it dries up. Local people dig in the dry soil to find them. At a depth of two or three chi, there are paths where eels have passed back and forth, containing mud and water. When the water recedes, they burrow deeper; when water returns, they emerge.
If Crucian Carp (*Carassius auratus*) is slit open at the abdomen, filled with herbs, and roasted, it treats dental diseases.
Use the dried skin along with its spines. The spines, made into brushes, are excellent for processing silk fabrics. This animal also treats rebellious stomach qi and has merit in opening gastric qi; the character composition of "insect" plus "stomach" implies rationale. Its gallbladder treats diseases caused by eagles eating improperly. In the world, some keep them as pets; if released, they return, and after a long time, they do not leave. When it shrinks its body and hides its feet, pouring human urine on it makes it open. Mixed in equal parts with *Pholidota Scaly Pangolin Scales* (Chuan Shan Jia), calcined to retain its properties, it treats hemorrhoids. Mix with half the amount of *Myristica Seed* (Rou Dou Kou), powder it, and take two qian mixed with hot rice drink on an empty stomach. Regarding Tao Hongjing's account of leaping into a tiger's ear and receiving pecks on its belly, the annotations in *Tang Bencao* have rejected these stories, which is indeed reasonable.
This is the lizard (*Gekko gecko*), now commonly called "Yixi". The large ones are seven or eight cun long, with golden-green colors on their bodies. During the reign of Emperor Renzong, a lizard appeared in the temple near the moat west of Youye Gate; this was truly a lizard, and Zhuangyuan Zheng wrote a poem about it. A woodcutter walking along a stream saw a lizard emerging from a crevice in a rock, drinking water, and then re-entering. After a long while, this happened more than a hundred times without stopping. The woodcutter suspected it would not escape disaster, turned over the stone, and found one or two sheng of hail inside. The woodcutter left in amazement. After walking three or five li, heavy rain fell. After a long while, violent wind and hail suddenly erupted. Currently, prefectures and counties use this method according to law to pray for rain. The classic states: "Treats five types of strangury, breaks stone strangury, benefits the water passages." Does this also imply this meaning?
