One type has large grains, and another type has small grains. The smaller ones are used for medicinal purposes. Their color is greenish-blue.
Bitter and acrid, greatly hot in nature, with slight toxicity. Both flavor and qi are dense; their action floats and sinks, representing Yang within Yin. It enters the Blood aspect of the Foot-Taiyin (Spleen) meridian, and the Qi aspect of the Shaoyin (Kidney) and Jueyin (Liver) meridians.
Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) treats:
Damp-toxin, cough with blood, fixed Bi-syndrome (painful obstruction with fixed location), delirium, inability to eat, stomach discomfort (zao re), constipation, frequent urination, residual toxins from smallpox/rashes, ear disorders, and parasitic infestations.
Wuzhuyu is born from Fire qi, therefore... [The original text here is garbled/disordered, so a coherent translation is omitted for these fragmented phrases] ...its color is greenish-blue. The bark of the wood is also green; this indicates that Wood is utilized by Earth. In the third lunar month, it blooms red-purple flowers. Yang flavor achieves efficacy... treating turbid Qi... and... leading to Spleen disease due to Dampness. If Blood does not stagnate, the Liver naturally moistens, and the Spleen naturally dries. This is the meaning of descending Qi, eliminating Dampness, and treating Blood Bi. As Li Shizhen (Binhu) stated regarding acid regurgitation, this refers to the treatment of Damp-Heat syndromes in medical texts. For those with acid vomiting or regurgitation, Yan Cu Wan (Vinegar Swallowing Pill) is administered, using Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) as the Sovereign herb, Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), and Wuzhuyu as Ministers. For severe cases of Damp-Heat with stagnant Qi, Shen Zhu Wan (Ginseng and Evodia Pill) is given, using Liuyi San (Six-to-One Powder) as the Sovereign formula and Wuzhuyu as an Assistant, taken together. As for treating acid regurgitation caused by Deficiency-Cold, for those with vinegar-like Qi attacking upward, only strong vinegar decocted with Wuzhuyu is taken in one dose; for those with postprandial acid regurgitation, equal parts of processed Wuzhuyu and Paojiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum) are powdered and taken. Generally, this syndrome differs between Damp-Heat and Cold-Damp. Only this herb can descend Qi and eliminate Dampness, which is its primary function. Regarding the treatment of Cold-Damp, it addresses Dampness formed due to Cold, where Dampness follows Cold. Regarding the treatment of Damp-Heat, it addresses Heat transformed from Dampness, where Heat follows Dampness. Furthermore, this herb's treatment of diarrhea also distinguishes between Damp-Heat and Cold-Damp. In cases of Heat following Dampness transformation, Heat comes after Dampness; thus, Huanglian is used to dry and clear, combined with this herb to move stagnation in the Middle Jiao (Spleen/Stomach), allowing Dampness to resolve first and achieve efficacy. As for Cold-Damp diarrhea, it is mostly due to Deficiency of Primordial Yang, as mentioned in the classics as "Middle Qi Dampness." Only warming the Middle and descending Qi like Wuzhuyu can, along with other herbs, restore Primordial Yang from the realm of non-being. Similarly, for hernia syndromes, there are treatments for Damp-Heat and Cold-Damp. The Cold type is contracted externally and is not solely blamed on Primordial Yang deficiency. Due to Cold, Yang fails to transform; when Yang fails to transform, it stagnates within the Cold, termed Cold transforming into Dampness, and then Dampness transforming into Heat. Therefore, Zhu Danxi argued that treatment should focus on unblocking, whether through dispersing, separating/draining, or acupuncture/moxibustion, all aiming to unblock pathogens contracted externally. Although external pathogens are indeed etiological factors, the actual pathology lies in the failure of Kidney Water's transformation, causing Wind-Wood to stagnate within its generating organ. Consequently, diseases appearing in the lower abdomen and external genitalia—areas belonging to the Kidney and Liver—are invariably accurate. The "Damp-Heat" mentioned here is not merely Cold transforming into Dampness, but also... additionally... removing Qi and Blood Bi... for severe Heat use... use.) Vertigo and dizziness. Miao Xiyong said: Yang Jue (reversal) resembles Yin Jue. Although the hands and feet are cold, the mouth is often thirsty and desires drinking water; both stool and urine are constipated; even if urination is smooth, it is red, scanty, and painful.
[Processing] Soak in boiling water, remove the bitter and harsh juice seven times, then bake for use.
