This is Jinfei Cao (Golden Boiling Grass, *Inula japonica*). Also known as Jinqian Hua (Money Flower) and Didijin. It produces seedlings in the second lunar month, growing one to two chi tall. The stem is soft and slender, resembling Honglan (a type of orchid or iris) but without thorns. The leaves are like those of large chrysanthemums, Shuisu (Perilla frutescens), Hao (Artemisia species), and Ai (Mugwort). In the sixth lunar month, it blooms with golden-yellow flowers, also resembling chrysanthemums, and its fragrance surpasses that of chrysanthemums.
Its taste is salty and sweet; its nature is warm. Kou Zongshi stated it is pungent and bitter, entering the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. It treats Jieqi (stagnant qi), removes water retention, and dissipates phlegm nodules in the chest, causing expectoration of substances as sticky as glue or lacquer. It also treats Yiqi (belching), benefits phlegm-fluid retention and hypochondriac fullness in the Upper Jiao, and treats edema and Liuyin (retained fluid) in the Bladder. (This embodies the principle of scattering essence to the Lungs, regulating the water passages, and transporting fluids downward to the Bladder.) It benefits the Large Intestine. (As connected with the Lungs by a single Qi flow.) It unifies the blood vessels and treats Fengbi (wind-damp bi syndrome). (When blood vessels are knotted, wind-qi cannot transform; when wind-qi becomes diseased, damp-bi forms.) It expels wind from the head and eyes. Medical texts treat coughs and headaches, convulsions and vertigo, jaundice, and eye diseases often use it. This is a substance that dissipates phlegm, guides out fluids, scatters nodules, and promotes qi movement. Its claim to remove palpitations stems from removing subcardiac fluid-retention, thereby calming the Shen (Spirit). Furthermore, phlegm-fluid stagnation generates wind-heat; this herb can disperse it, thus treating eye nebulae and cephalalgia due to wind. (Song) It inherits Winter Qi to grow, hence its primary taste is recorded as salty. Salty flavors can soften hardness; being slightly warm allows it to circulate freely. (Zhongchun) After sweating or purgation in Shanghan (Cold Damage) leading to a hard epigastric mass and persistent belching, there is Xuanfu Daizhe Tang (Inula and Hematite Decoction). *Jingui Yaolue* treats post-miscarriage bleeding where deficiency-cold intertwines, presenting with wiry and hollow pulses, using three liang of Xuanfuhua (Flower of Inula), fourteen stalks of Congbai (Green Onion Bulb), and a small amount of Xinjiang (New Crimson Dye/Safflower), boiled in three sheng of water to one sheng, taken in one dose. Hu Qia treats phlegm-fluid causing distension and fullness in both hypochondria with Xuanfuhua Wan (Inula Pill).
[Discussion] Xuanfuhua mostly grows in low-lying wet areas. Its taste is salty. Miao suspected it inherits Winter Qi to grow, regarding it as a transformation of Water Qi. However, the part used is the flower; it blooms in the sixth lunar month, with fragrance and color identical to chrysanthemums, still containing Metal Qi, hence named Xiaju (Summer Chrysanthemum) and referred to as "stealing Geng" (Geng being the Heavenly Stem for Metal). The Classics state: Earth Qi rises to generate water fluids. This substance inherits the transformation of Water Qi and interfaces upward with the function of Metal Qi, analogous to Kidney Qi reaching the Lungs in the human body. Yet its flowering occurs in the sixth lunar month, meaning the distribution of Metal Qi happens when Fire and Earth are at their peak; this is worth considering. The Qi of the human body is indeed generated by Water. When Metal and Water nourish each other, the source of Water is abundant, generating Qi. The fluids of the human body are transformed by Qi. When Metal and Fire combine, the function of Qi is complete, transforming fluids. The *Shennong Bencao Jing* primarily addresses Jieqi (stagnant qi), precisely referring to its ability to scatter stagnant qi within fluids. (Water returns to Metal, Metal returns to Fire; thus Water transforms into Qi, Qi transforms into Fluids, Fluids transform into Blood. This is the unique efficacy of this substance, incomparable to other herbs that chase phlegm and drain water.) The transformation of essence from food and drink into fluids relies on the function of Zongqi (Pectoral Qi). Zongqi gathers in the Danzhong (Conception Vessel/Chest center) (which is the spirit of Fire), and uses True Fire combined with Metal to cook and refine fluids, eventually transforming them into blood. Thus, its primary treatment of Jieqi is exactly its ability to unify blood vessels. Phlegm and fluid all root in dampness. Earth and Water cooperate to establish the ground; without the cooperation of Metal and Fire for transportation and transformation, water accumulates and fails to move. Ancient sages said: When water is excessive and mixes with blood, it does not nourish the circulation of Yingqi (Nutritive Qi), or fails to transform into fluids and does not follow the function of Weiqi (Defensive Qi), gathering in the meridians to cause disease. Interpreting this statement, the claimed functions of treating Jieqi, removing water, and unifying blood vessels become clear. Generally, this herb treats Wind,其次 (secondarily) Wind-Cold, and also Wind-Heat, depending on the main formula components. Danxi considered it a dispersing drug; patients involving deficiency should not take it in large doses. (Zhongchun)
