[Zhenzhu / Pearl]
Produced in the South Sea and North Sea. It is also occasionally found in Nügu River, Beitangluo River, and Nanhumao Lake in the Western Route of Sichuan and Shu. In Guangdong, there are four pearl pools in Lianzhou and one in Leizhou; these are actually sea areas surrounded by islands, hence called "pools." Pearl is the yin essence condensed within a clam. Oysters, clams, and mussels do not have distinct male and female counterparts (yin and yang); they require the influence of *Quege* (a type of parasitic small organism) to form pearls, thus named Zhenzhu.

It tastes sweet and slightly salty, has a cold nature, and enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. It clears the heart and calms the spirit, stabilizes the soul, brightens the eyes, removes ocular nebulae and membranes, eliminates pediatric fever due to fright, and resolves toxicity from smallpox and carbuncles... [Discussion] The formation of clam pearls correlates with the waxing and waning of the moon, which in turn depends on the sun. *Huainanzi* states: "When the moon wanes, snails and clams close." This precisely refers to the reason why yin cannot obtain yang illumination. Therefore, pearl is yang within yin, as described in *Guanzi*. It originates from the essence of extreme yin but shares the light of extreme yang; adhering to this light, it condenses into a cold essence... Liver deficiency and cold...

[Preparation] For medicinal use, pearls from jewelry or those contaminated by corpse odor should not be used. Take a piece of tofu, place the pearl inside, tie it securely, and boil for the time it takes to burn one incense stick before removing.

[Haige / Sea Clam Powder]
A general term for the decayed shells of various clams in the sea, not specific to one species. Generally, sea clams and mussels, despite differing in name and color, share similar properties, flavors, and functions. Wen Ge (Clam Shell) may be a separate variety. It treats lower back pain, blood stasis due to Cold Damage, tumors, goiter, five types of hemorrhoids, hernia syndromes, and women's... chest binding with distending pain that cannot be touched. Zhang Zhongjing [prescribed]... as powder, take 2 qian per dose, mixed with egg white... Stagnation prevents blood flow; taking this promotes Small Intestine...

[Discussion] According to the *Shennong Bencao Jing*, Haige treats cough with reversed qi, panting, and fullness with irritability, all of which are signs of deficient yin qi rebelling upward. This is the powder made from various sea clams, distinguished from Jianghu (river/lake) clam powder and mussel powder. In recent times, only clam shell powder is used medicinally. Generally, sea mussels, clams, ark shells, and oysters are salty in taste and dispersing in nature, with roughly similar functions. Unlike river/lake mussels and clams which lack saltwater immersion and can only clear heat and promote diuresis, there is another substance in pharmacies resembling thread-like powder, called Haifen (Sea Powder). It decays easily when wet, originates from sand and stones in the sea, and its function also includes resolving phlegm and softening hardness.

Salty in taste, neutral in nature. It is a medicine for the Blood aspect of the Kidney Meridian, treating panting and cough with reversed qi. (Cough and asthma due to lung dryness and stagnation). It transforms phlegm-fluids, resolves qi knots, and softens hard accumulations. (Hot phlegm can... Treats hernia and goiter nodules, dissipates swelling and toxins, treats leukorrhea and blood disorders in women, applied with oil for burns/scalds, and primarily treats damp cough and kidney slipping diseases. For turbid urine and seminal emission, Jiegu stated: Excess yang and deficient yin cause sperm leakage. Use Zhenzhu Fen Wan (Pearl Powder Pill). Haifen (Clam Powder) 1 jin, Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) stir-fried 1 jin, ground fine, formed into pills with clean water like wu zi size. Take 100 pills per dose, with warm wine on an empty stomach, twice daily. For bloody dysentery, use Yufen San (Jade Powder Powder), finely ground Haifen, take 2 qian each time, mixed with honey-water, capable of resolving toxic accumulated heat in the zang-fu. Note that this substance shares the qi with the clear transformation of Kidney Yin...

Regarding Haige in the *Bencao Jing*... For those with Spleen and Stomach deficiency-cold, it must be used together with medicines that tonify the Spleen and Stomach. (Zhongchun)

[Preparation] Not suitable for decoction. (Danxi) For treating dry-phlegm, take purple-edged clam shells, calcine them over charcoal fire until ash, and pound together with ripe Trichosanthis Fructus including seeds.
