Yellow stone with pale white spots in the middle. Hence the name "Flower". *Tu Jing Ben Cao* (Illustrated Classic of Materia Medica) refers to it as Huarui Shi (Flower Stamen Stone). (Chen Zangqi's annotation)
Taste: sour, astringent. Nature: neutral. It is a drug entering the Jueyin meridian blood level. It primarily treats bleeding from metal wounds, uterine syncope due to blood stasis and lochia retention in women, as well as all types of hemorrhage and trauma. It treats internal leakage (chronic internal bleeding) and corneal nebula (clouding of the cornea). It can also expel dead fetus and shed the placenta, removing bad blood. Once the bad blood dissipates, there will be no obstruction for the fetus and placenta. Li Dongyuan stated: for retained placenta, astringent agents can induce its expulsion. Therefore, Chishi Zhi (Red Halloysite) can also facilitate the expulsion of the placenta, sharing the same principle. (Li Shizhen's annotation) When mixed with Liu Huang (Sulfur) and ground into powder, applied externally to metal wounds, it is extremely effective.
For those suddenly injured by sharp metal instruments without time for other treatments, simply scraping the powder and applying it to the wound is also effective. (Su Song's annotation) Huarui Shi is a yin stone; its efficacy specializes in stopping bleeding, transforming blood into water-like fluid, utilizing its sour property to astringe. (Li Shizhen's annotation) Hua Ru Shi is a sour, acrid, and warm drug. Its efficacy specializes in stopping bleeding, while its sour and astringent qi can also resolve blood stasis. Thus, when applied to metal wounds, it promotes rapid healing without suppuration. (Chen Shigong's annotation)
Huarui Shi San (Flower Stamen Stone Powder) treats all injuries caused by metal blades, arrowheads, and blunt force trauma. For individuals bitten by dogs to the point of apparent death, urgently apply the powder to the wound; the blood transforms into yellow fluid. Applying again restores life, and pain ceases. In cases of internal injury where blood enters the zang-fu organs, decoct Tong Bian (Child's Urine), add a small amount of wine, heat, and administer one qian orally for immediate effect. For livestock injured by horn goring, if intestines are prolapsed but intact, urgently reduce them into the abdominal cavity, suture using mulberry root bark thread, apply the powder, stop bleeding, and restore life immediately. For postpartum women with incomplete expulsion of lochia, uterine syncope, malignant blood rushing to the heart, intrauterine fetal death, or retained placenta, provided the heart area remains warm, urgently administer one qian mixed with Tong Bian. This expels foul matter resembling pig liver, preventing future occurrences of Blood Wind and Blood Qi disorders. If blood above the diaphragm transforms into yellow fluid, it can be vomited out or excreted via urine, which is very effective. Formula: Use four liang of Liu Huang (Sulfur) and one liang of Hua Ru Shi, grind together into coarse powder, mix evenly. Place in a clay jar, seal tightly with gum mud, dry in the sun, and place on a brick inscribed with Bagua and Five Elements characters. Surround with one cheng of charcoal. Ignite fire from below starting at Si-Wu hours (9 AM - 3 PM), burn until charcoal is consumed, cool down, remove, grind into fine powder, and store in a bottle. For chronic cataracts (Zhang Yi), process Hua Ru Shi by water levigation and calcination, combine with Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Niu Bang Zi (Arctium Fruit), Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum Flower), Bai Fu Zi (Arisaema Rhizome) each one liang, and Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root) half a liang. Grind into powder. Take half a qian per dose, washed down with aged tea.
[Discussion] Hua Ru Shi originates from western regions. In treating blood disorders, it seems to achieve hemostasis through resolving stasis, possibly adhering to the principle of "calling the child with the mother's qi." For patients not suffering from yin deficiency but experiencing rebellious blood flow, stasis is likely present. Using Hua Ru Shi to resolve stasis and stop bleeding yields miraculous effects. As seen in the treatment of critical postpartum blood stasis syndromes by Huarui Shi San, patients remain free from Blood Wind and Blood Qi disorders for life. The stasis-resolving property of this herb seems to restore the original state of blood, neither forcibly stopping bleeding nor harshly purging to exacerbate deficiency. Clinicians must carefully assess indications. Does it not rely on its rapid efficacy? Rebellious blood flow not due to yin deficiency often stems from qi deficiency failing to guide blood back to the meridians. This typically requires qi-tonifying formulas and contraindicates cold-natured drugs. However, in cases of sudden cold invasion causing blood coagulation and rebellion, qi-tonifying measures may need delay; such herbs like this serve as appropriate remedies.
For hemoptysis due to consumptive fever, it is mostly caused by fire flaring up forcing blood upward. It can only be temporarily used if there is pre-existing stasis stagnation above the diaphragm. Even then, it must be taken with large amounts of Tong Bian (Child's Urine). If no stasis exists, internal use is inappropriate. For hemoptysis caused by fire flaring and blood overflow, not due to internal injury and blood coagulation accompanied by chest rigidity and pain, it is contraindicated. (Chen Shigong's annotation)
[Processing] For use in pills or powders, seal in a jar, roast over top-fire to eliminate fire toxicity, grind finely, process by water levigation, dry, and use.
