Bone
Taste: Acrid. Nature: Slightly warm and neutral. (The meat is sour.)
Indications: Treats toxic wind affecting the sinews and bones, muscle spasms and stiffness, inability to flex or extend limbs, migrating pain, strengthens bones and expels wind, stops convulsions and epilepsy, and treats warm malaria.
Formulary texts indicate its use for stroke, deficiency consumption, bi-syndrome, and flaccidity syndrome; crane-knee disease with delirium; lower back pain; and "Hong Kong foot" (gout).
Why does wind follow the tiger? Wind belongs to Wood; the tiger belongs to Metal. When Wood is controlled by Metal, how can it not follow? (Zong) The Western Metal beast, yet it governs the East Jia Gallbladder and Yi Liver Wood. This is what is called "control leads to transformation." Without control, there is hyperactivity; hyperactivity leads to harm. (Zhiyi)
Generally, to dispel evil influences and treat convulsions, epilepsy, warm malaria, sores, carbuncles, and head wind, the skull bone should be used. For various winds of the hands and feet, the tibia should be used. For winds of the waist and back, the spinal bone should be used. (Binhu)
The tiger's strength relies on its tibia; even after death, it stands without falling. Therefore, it is used to treat weakness in the legs and shins. (Shishan)
Combined with Huai Niu Xi (Achyranthes Bidentatae Radix), Mu Gua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), and Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus), it treats weakness in the waist and knees, pain in the sinews and bones, or flaccidity and inability to walk.
Combined with Bi Xie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Huai Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Shou Wu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix), Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen), Mu Gua (Chaenomelis Fructus), and Ci Ji Li (Tribuli Fructus), it treats wind-cold-dampness pathogens adhering to the meridians, resulting in hemiplegic numbness.
Combined with Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Xu Duan (Dipsaci Radix), Huai Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Bai Jiao (Colla Corii Asini), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), and Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), it treats pain throughout the body's joints.
To treat "White Tiger" wind pain with migrating sensations and heat/swelling in both knees: Use Hu Jing Gu (Pantherae Os / Tigris Ossis) coated with butter and roasted until yellow, and Hei Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) cracked, peeled, and processed, each one liang. Grind into powder. Take two qian per dose with warm wine, twice daily.
For joint gout: Use Hu Jing Gu roasted in wine, three liang, and Mo Yao (Myrrha), seven qian. Grind into powder. Take two qian per dose with warm wine, three times daily.
For acute pain in sinews and bones: Decoct Hu Gu (Pantheris Os / Tigris Os) with Tong Cao (Tetrapanacis Medulla). Drink half sheng on an empty stomach, lie prone for a short while; sweating indicates efficacy. Strictly avoid hot food as it damages teeth. Do not give to children, fearing it will prevent tooth growth.
For insufficiency of Qi and Blood in the Liver and Kidneys, causing soreness and pain in the feet and knees, and unsteady gait: Hu Jing Gu, one liang; Cu Zhi Mo Yao (Myrrha Prepared with Vinegar) and Ru Xiang (Olibanum) separately ground, five qian each; Pao Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite) peeled and de-embryoned, two liang; Cong Rong (Cynomorii Herba) washed; Chuan Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Mu Gua (Chaenomelis Fructus), and Tian Ma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), each one and a half liang. Grind the rest into powder. Mash Mu Gua and Cong Rong into a paste, add wine, and make pills the size of wu zi (wu berry). Take 70-80 pills per dose on an empty stomach with salt water decoction.
For chronic dysentery that has persisted for years: Roast Hu Gu until yellow and charred, grind into powder, and take one fang cun bi (measure of a square inch spoon) with water, three times daily until effective.
Reviewing the above treatments, they do not all belong to wind. One must further understand the principle of Metal and Wood interacting. The Classics state: "When extreme Yang is abundant, Earth Qi is insufficient." Only Hu Gu can achieve this effect. Since Metal interacts with Wood, the Yang rising with wind reaches the celestial surface; within Yang resides Yin. This is precisely...
[Discussion]
The Tiger governs Wind-Wood. Its form is majestic. Its Qi embodies severe killing energy, possessing the purity of Metal, so Wind-Wood transforms through it. Taking its bone, which is acrid in taste, disperses, and promotes circulation, it treats various wind syndromes. Zong stated that Wood is controlled by Metal; Zhiyi stated that Wood follows Metal transformation. Control means Metal still serves Wood; transformation means Wood entirely serves Metal. Thus, whether wind is excessive or deficient, this herb is suitable. To calm the wind of Wood, one must rely on Metal; this is not merely about mutual control. In the human body, if Liver-Wood rises from Yin to reach Yang in Heaven, without Lung-Metal descending from Yang to convey Yin to Earth, how can Liver-Yin be enriched to allow rightward rotation, returning to its origin, thus maintaining continuous ascent and descent? The Classics say: "If ascent and descent cease, Qi establishment becomes isolated and perilous." This allows one to comprehend the meaning of Metal-Wood interaction. (Critical stroke cases are solely due to the cessation of ascent and descent; this principle is most crucial, though predecessors failed to elucidate it.)
The merit of Hu Gu seems specific to the Qi level, but at the Qi level, it acts as the master benefiting Blood, because it interacts from Lung to Liver. The Liver is indeed the storehouse of Blood. Formulary texts use it for stroke, deficiency consumption, spasms, bi-syndrome, Hong Kong foot, and lower back pain. These are all treatments focusing on sinews. Sinews are governed by the Liver, and the meaning of benefiting blood is particularly relevant here, as Blood nourishes sinews. Regarding moving bi-syndromes, there are differences between wind-toxic and wind-deficient types, yet Hu Gu is primarily used for both. This is because the initial Qi of Wind-Wood in the human body is derived from Yang within Yin; where there is ascent, there must be descent, and Yin controls Yang to facilitate this movement. For example, migrating wind-toxic pain occurs because Yin is weak and cannot transform Yang; migrating wind-deficient pain also occurs because Yin is weak and cannot command Yang. Only Hu Gu can serve as the transformer and commander of Yang; this is the practical reality of Wood following Metal transformation. Even if one does not suffer from wind, conditions like lower back pain, fixed bi-syndrome, and flaccidity syndrome are treated similarly to wind-toxic methods by promoting Yin to harmonize Yang. Similarly, treating Hong Kong foot is like using it for wind-deficient types to nurture Yin and assist Qi to reach Yang.
In summary, the Liver governs the ascent of Earth Qi, and the Lung governs the descent of Heaven Qi. Through ascent, one obtains descent to transport and nourish on Earth; thus, the Lung is the function of the Liver. Through descent, one obtains ascent to flow freely in Heaven; thus, the Liver is again the function of the Lung. Because the Lung is the function of the Liver, Yang harmonizes with Yin to transform Blood. Because the Liver is the function of the Lung, Blood harmonizes with Qi to transform Essence. This aligns with the Inner Canon: "Metal and Wood are the beginning and end of generation and completion." If one does not consider Wind-Wood as the beginning of Yuan Qi emerging from the earth, and does not realize that those who start correctly can achieve subtle biochemical changes through mutual ascent and descent, and merely claim it treats wind, is this not akin to talking in dreams?
[Differentiation and Treatment]
For various parts of the tiger, male tigers are preferred. Tiger skulls and tibias with yellowish-white color are best. The bones in the front paw wrists are round and flat...
Use dog meat, wrap overnight, offer favorite foods to restore its spirit. Crush all bones, remove marrow, coat with butter, or use wine or vinegar, roast over willow ash fire until yellow and brittle, grind into flying dust. Otherwise, it will stick to the intestines causing masses.
Eye
When tigers see at night, one eye emits light while the other looks at objects. Hunters wait and shoot. Just as the arrow arrives, the gaze falls into the ground. Mark the spot, dig more than a chi deep, and find stones resembling white pebbles or amber. This is their essence sinking into the earth.
Indications: Treats mania, malaria, calms the heart and spirit, treats pediatric convulsions, crying, palpitations, external fright, and malnutrition.
Attached Formulas
Hu Jing Wan (Tiger Eye Pill): Treats epilepsy attacks with salivary flooding, convulsions, and intermittent delirium. Hu Jing (Tiger Eyes), pair, lightly stir-fried; Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix), each one liang; Zhi Zi Ren (Gardeniae Semen), half liang. Grind into powder, refine honey to make pills the size of mung beans. Take 20 pills with warm wine.
Di Long San (Earthworm Powder): Universally treats various pediatric epilepsies with unpredictable onset. Gan Di Long (Pheretima), half liang, roasted; Hu Jing (Tiger Eyes), pair, roasted; Zhi Ren Shen (Prepared Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), two and a half qian; Jin Yin Bo (Gold and Silver Leaf), thirty pieces; Tian Zhu Huang (Calami Pulvis); Zhu Sha (Cinnabaris); Dai Zhe Shi (Haematitum), baked and quenched in vinegar; Tie Qian (Ferrum), each two and a half qian; Xiong Huang (Realgar), one and a half qian; Qing Fen (Calomelas), half qian. Grind into powder. Take half qian per dose, mixed with Perilla Decoction, at any time.
[Discussion]
Tiger eyes treating epilepsy mostly involve the Liver and Heart organs. This is precisely the meaning of Wood following Metal transformation. Although it focuses on the Qi level, it inherently benefits...
