**Ginkgo (Yinxing)**
The flowers bloom in the second lunar month. They open at the second watch (9:00 PM – 11:00 PM) and fall off immediately. People rarely see them bloom. One branch may bear one hundred to a thousand fruits, which ripen only after enduring frost. The flesh is removed when rotten, and the nut is taken as the fruit. Those with three ridges are male, and those with two ridges are female. Male and female trees must be planted together; they will fruit only if they can "see" each other. Alternatively, a female tree near water may also fruit. Or, a hole can be drilled into the tree, a piece of male wood inserted, and sealed with mud, and it will still fruit. Such is the wonder of the mutual感应 (interaction/resonance) of Yin and Yang.
**Kernel (Ren)**
Taste: Sweet, Bitter, Astringent. Nature: Neutral. Meridian Tropism: Hand-Taiyin Lung Channel. Cooked consumption warms the Lungs, benefits Qi, stabilizes asthma and cough, reduces urination, and stops leukorrhea (white turbid discharge). Raw consumption reduces phlegm toxins and kills parasites. Crushed raw, it can degrease. Its efficacy in removing phlegm-turbidity is evident. Excessive consumption leads to Qi stagnation and abdominal distension, due to an excess of astringent properties.
[Discussion] Formulas use Ginkgo to treat asthma. This refers to treating wheezing asthma. This condition arises from phlegm in the chest rising with Qi and adhering to the throat and epiglottis... [Text fragmentary]. Therefore... astringe and descend... blood... pathology... Flesh...
**Flesh (Rou)**
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Warm. Meridian Tropism: Hand-Shaoyin Heart Channel, Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Channel, Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Channel, Foot-Jueyin Liver Channel. It unblocks the spirit, enhances wisdom, strengthens Qi, dispels cold, quenches thirst, and improves complexion. It treats scrofula (lymphatic tuberculosis), tumors, warts, swelling, carbuncles, and promotes the eruption of chickenpox in children. Lychee belongs to Yang. It primarily dissipates stagnant Qi without form. Therefore, it is used for tumors, warts, redness, and swelling. (Zhu Danxi) Its nature fears cold... (Wang Lun?) Sweet and warm, benefits Blood, assists Ying-Qi. (Zhang Jiebin) In the elderly with Qi deficiency and sudden cold in the stomach, attempting to disperse makes Qi more deficient; hastily administering Ginseng... then slight cold... more... not... wine...
**Seed (He)**
Taste: Sweet, Astringent. Nature: Warm. Benefits the Jueyin channels. Moves and disperses stagnant Qi. Treats heart pain, Xiao Chang (Small Intestine) Qi pain, hernia, and stabbing pain from Blood and Qi disorders in women. Its fruit often grows in pairs, and its seed resembles the testicles. Thus, its treatment of hernia and testicular swelling embodies the principle of "describing categories by morphology" (Xiang Lei Xiang Xing). (Li Shizhen) Combined with Psoraleae Fructus (Buguzhi), Achyranthis Radix (Niuxi), Corydalis Rhizoma (Yanhusuo), Foeniculum Fructus (Huixiang), Chaenomelis Fructus (Mugua), Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Juhe), and Sulfur, it yields effective results for pain... ... liang (unit of weight)...
[Discussion] Lychee grows in hot southern regions. It remains green and lush in winter and spring. By the time approaching the Summer Solstice, it turns red.
The reason it ripens around the Summer Solstice is that the function of Yang Qi encounters Yin Qi advancing to complete its formation.
Obtaining Yin to accomplish the function of Yang. What the Materia Medica calls "strengthening Qi and dispelling cold" is precisely the typical proof of entering Yin to reach Yang. Zhu Danxi advocates dissipating stagnant Qi without form.
Conditions where Qi is stagnant in Yin, such as scrofula, warts, red swelling, and carbuncles, are indeed Yin enclosing Yang. Regarding this condition... fire. This is also the meaning of entering Yin to reach Yang. As for the principle of "describing categories by morphology," the idea is that the seed can enter the Liver and Kidneys to treat... ?
Its treatment of heart pain and Small Intestine pain is pain caused by Yang deficiency allowing Yin to invade, not pain caused by Yang excess and Yin deficiency.
The taste enters the Blood to transform Qi. The Classics say: "Qi deficiency is Cold." It also says: "Nourish Qi in Yang." Here...
It further enters Yin to transform it. This is called dispelling cold. This is called dissipating stagnation. It certainly cannot be grouped with other pungent and hot substances. Its entry into Yin to dissipate cold in the Qi aspect is largely unlike purely tonifying Yang herbs. This is its uniqueness.
Fresh lychee, if eaten in excess, causes fever, irritability, and thirst. It can be known that quenching thirst applies only when Yang deficiency fails to transform Yin, and fluids are not generated...
Otherwise, it would be doing things backwards.
