Muscovite is the root of Yangqishi (Actinolite). It grows in the valleys of Mount Tai, Qi Mountain, and Langya. Currently, it is only produced in Qizhou (i.e., Licheng District, Jinan Prefecture). The mountains there are constantly warm, with no snow accumulation in winter. Every early winter, local officials supervise its extraction. Due to long-term mining, the caves become deep. It requires chiseling through other rocks to obtain it, which is very difficult. Those that are white, bright, and crystal clear, with shapes resembling cloud heads and rain feet, and a light texture like wild wolf teeth, are considered superior. Yellow ones are also valuable; those still bearing muscovite on them are called the finest grade. (Cited from *Bielu* and Su Song)
Yangqishi belongs to yang stones. Those mined from Jianjin Mountain in Qizhou are the best. Those with tips resembling arrowheads have strong potency, while those resembling dog teeth have weak potency. If placed in snow and it instantly leaves no trace, or if written on paper and floats away lightly, it is genuine. (Cited from *Gengxin Yuce*)
The flavor is salty, and the nature is warm. It is a herb acting on the qi aspect of the right kidney and Mingmen (Gate of Vitality). Sangpiaoxiao (Mantis Egg Case) serves as its guiding herb. It is incompatible with Zexie (Alisma Rhizome), Jungui (Cinnamomum Cassia Bark), Leiwan (Fritillaria Thunbergii Bulb), Shi Kui (Suaeda Glauca), and Shetui (Snake Skin). It fears Tusizi (Cuscuta Seed) and should avoid mutton blood. It tonifies the deficiency of Mingmen, treats impotence (Yinwei) with inability to erect, as well as lower back pain, cold knees, and bi-syndrome due to dampness. For women with long-standing cold uterus, cold masses (Hanxia), irregular menstruation, stagnant qi with alternating hot and cold sensations, abdominal pain leading to infertility, and for both men and women with deficiency-cold in the lower jiao, exhaustion of kidney qi, and long-standing cold of the zi zang (uterus), it can be used. However, mineral herbs, whether cold or warm, possess toxicity, and their use should be carefully considered. (Cited from Kou Zongshi) Moreover, it is not a substance for long-term consumption. (Cited from Li Shizhen)
Houbi (Sore throat/Pharyngitis) is a disease caused by the rapid flare-up of Xianghuo (Ministerial Fire), which is also Longhuo (Dragon Fire). It is appropriate to expel it using "fire" methods. A patient suffered from Chantoufeng (Peritonsillar Abscess/Tight Throat Wind), with swelling inside and out, making oral medication impossible. Cold medicines were instilled into the nose, causing more than ten episodes of diarrhea. Externally, Yangqishi (Actinolite) and Fulonggan (Settled Dragon Liver/Kiln Earth) were mixed in equal parts, ground into fine powder, and applied daily one hundred times with fresh water drawn from a well. After three days, the heat subsided and swelling disappeared. This is also a method of treating according to the disease's nature (Congzhi). (Cited from Zhang Zihe)
Yang (Qi) outside is the servant of Yin; Yin inside is the guardian of Yang. Yin stores essence and responds rapidly; Yang protects the exterior and maintains solidity. Yangqishi benefits both aspects. (Cited from Su Zhe)
It is born from pure yang qi. *Benjing* (*Shennong Bencao Jing*) states its qi is slightly warm. However, observing the mountains where this stone is found, where even heavy snow does not freeze, its warming qi must be more than just slightly warm. Salty and warm, it enters the right kidney, supplements yang qi, and is a supreme herb for eliminating accumulated cold, old blood stasis, and stagnation in the lower jiao. (Cited from Chen Shidun) For cases of impotence with inability to erect and cold sperm leading to infertility, taken with warming and tonifying herbs, it can strengthen sexual function and treat the nine deficiencies of men, enabling procreation.
[Discussion]
All things that endow abundant yang qi tend to ascend. The qi of this mountain is uniquely concentrated here, condensing into this stone. (Similar phenomena, such as hot springs, are rare.) Users only seek its yang qi; therefore, those that are light in texture, resemble wild wolf teeth, and float when placed on paper are preferred. Yang fire originates from within the earth, making it suitable for tonifying Mingmen deficiency, restoring erection, warming the uterus, and serving as a supreme herb for diseases of the lower jiao in both men and women. Various treatments utilize its ascending yang, employing dynamic qi transformation to address the condition. However, since Su Song already noted its scarcity, and today fake versions are common, it is better not to use it at all. It is contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency with fire hyperactivity. Impotence due to loss of willpower (where fire qi is closed and cannot vent) and metrorrhagia due to excessive fire should not take this herb. (Cited from Chen Shidun)
[Processing]
Not used in decoctions. Calcined over fire until red, ground extremely finely like flour, processed by water levigation (shui fei), and dried in the sun before use.
