Methods for Purging Toxins and Killing Parasites
If the disease is in the zang-fu organs, purgative methods should be used. Humans cannot survive without food; going a day without eating causes hunger. However, wind-damp pathogens and generated parasites are entangled by daily diet, making them difficult to expel. If wind-damp is not expelled, steaming fever occurs, and muscles turn purple-black. If parasites are not expelled, they gnaw the intestines and stomach, consuming essence and blood. The human body becomes like rotten wood or a dilapidated house, which cannot withstand such damage. Therefore, heavy, sinking, and parasiticidal drugs must be used to expel toxins via the bowels. After expulsion, gradual nourishment restores stomach qi and increases essence and blood, similar to the restoration of prosperity in the Song Dynasty. (*Liyou Quanshu*)
A woman suffered from leprosy. Physician Weng diagnosed her pulse as rapid upon arrival but slow upon departure, with deficiency in the upper jiao and excess in the lower jiao, attributing it to wind-toxin invading after drunken sexual intercourse. Although her hair had fallen out and eyebrows dropped, her nasal root remained intact and muscles were not necrotic. He prescribed Fangfeng Tongsheng San combined with purgatives, expelling several sheng of blood stasis and black-green parasitic waste. He administered Qishe and Changsong Tang decoctions and pills, supplemented with external massage using Xionghuang and Fengyou ointment. She recovered after one month. (*Cangzhou Weng Zhuan*)

Eyebrows will gradually grow, and skin will normalize. Severe cases require no more than three or two treatments. Rest is essential; avoid overexertion. Lifelong avoidance of beef, horse, mule, and donkey meat is required; violators will die incurably. (*San Yin Fang*) Once no worms are found, the root is eradicated. When the internal organs shift, parasites will fall onto the ground. If the disease is chronic, worms are black; if recent, they are red. Repeat every three or two days until no worms are found, indicating cure. Then stop this medicine and take regular wind-dispelling and tonifying herbs. This medicine has miraculous effects. Urine may look like bean water; stool may contain green, red, yellow, or white matter, indicating the disease root. Take three times a month; the disease will gradually heal, hair will grow, and muscles will recover. If bleeding occurs from gums, take again. (*Wanying Fang*) *Waike Zhengzong* Bisheng San removes Fengcao and Qingfen from this formula (administration same). For bleeding gums, rinse with the following: *Cyathula officinalis* root (Guanzhong) and *Coptis chinensis* rhizome (Huanglian) (each 3 qian), decoct in 2 zhong of water until half remains, add a little *Borneolum Syntheticum* (Bingpian). Dry equal parts, calcine to retain property, grind into powder. Use like face-washing powder to wash body and hands. (*San Yin Fang*)
Another Method: Decoct branches of Peach, Willow, Mulberry, Locust, and Paper Mulberry strongly. Sit in a large vat immersed up to the neck for one day until the liquid resembles oil; then you will be safe. *Bencao* states: For severe diseases with widespread sores, strong decoction of *Azolla* bathed for half a day is highly effective; this is a divine formula. (*Danxi Zuanyao*)
Bathing Medicine: *Lycii Cortex* (Digupi), *Schizonepetae Herba* (Jingjie), *Sophora flavescens* root (Kushen), *Asari Radix et Rhizoma* (Xixin) (each 2 liang). Decoct in water, fumigate and wash in a windless place. Bleeding from the whole body indicates efficacy. (*Jiefang*)
For Leprosy, the treatment methods in *Yuji* are all valuable, but the drugs are often harsh, and acupuncture damages muscles. An old method involves digging a pit, heating firewood until red, removing fire, and splashing water. The patient sits in the pit while the water is warm, immersing, washing, and steaming until profuse sweating occurs. This cools blood and detoxifies. Internally, take blood-cooling and detoxifying medicines repeatedly; the disease can be cured. Another method: boil equal parts of Calcined Alum (Duanshi) and Indigofera tinctoria leaf (Landi) in water, immerse and wash as before, then drink Duanshi wine to remove internal toxins. (*Yixue Guanjian*)
Wenzhong's Formula for White Leprosy.
One dried *Protobothrops mucrosquamatus* (large viper), head and tail intact, do not miss any part. Soak in wine: one dou for large snakes, five sheng for small. Warm over bran fire until wine is absorbed. Take about one cun of snake meat, mix with December lard, and apply to sores. Avoid wheat and hot noodles. *Zhouhou* and *Fan Wang* agree. (*Waitai Miyao*) *Shenghui* adds *Mylabris* (Banmao) (14 pieces, stir-fried with glutinous rice until yellow), omitting lard.
If purple blisters on the face have not resolved, use dry *Mylabris* powder mixed with raw oil to form a paste, apply to the affected area. After about half a day, blisters swell. Wipe off medicine with soft cloth, puncture near the base with a thorn to drain fluid, then let dry. Do not peel the blister skin. Keep *Mylabris* away from mouth and eyes. If small pointed pustules appear on the face, do not use *Mylabris*; instead, mix prepared mugwort with a little Vitriol (Danfan), roll into moxa cones the size of hairpins, and moxa-burn each spot once. For unhealed sores on hands and feet, wash with hot licorice decoction. Further, pound 3 liang of *Stemonae Radix* (Baiziyao), 1 fen of *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* root (Gancao), and ten spikes of *Schizonepetae Herba* (Jingjie) into powder. Apply dry, or use like bath soap. (*Shengji Zonglu*)
For severe leprosy, burn *Liquidambar formosana* fruit (Fengmuzi) to ash, retain property, grind finely, mix equally with Calomel (Qingfen), and apply with sesame oil. If wet, sprinkle dry powder. (*Wangshi*)
*Dan Shi Jiaochao* treats scabies/psoriasis with itching and parasites: Remove shells from 40 *Croton tiglium* seeds (Dafengzi), pound into paste. Stir-fry *Rhei Radix et Rhizoma* (Dahuang) and *Cnidii Fructus* (Shechuangzi), Camphor (Zhangnao), and Sulfur (Liuhuang) (each 5 qian). Grind extremely fine, mix into the Dafengzi paste. Grind 5 qian of Mercury (Shuiyin) until no stars are visible. If too dry, add a few qian of lard, grind into pills. Wash sores with hot water first, then apply this medicine. (*Huiyan*, note: Ni Shi also discussed the harm of internal use: Binhu's formula for sores/scabies, applied externally only, moistens skin, kills parasites, stops itching, but is unsuitable for ingestion. Its external application merit is undeniable.)
Formula for Rubbing Purple Lumps/Bumps on Leprosy Face: Stir-fried *Manis pentadactyla* scale (Chuanshanjia) ash and Sichuan Pepper (Chuanjiao) powder (each 2 qian). Mix with Ginger Juice (Shengjiang Zhi) and *Rumex japonicus* root juice (Tudahuang Gen Zhi) to a thick consistency. Wrap in silk and rub onto affected areas.
