Take three qian before meals in the evening and morning, mixed with plain boiled water for administration. (*Huiyan*)
Guntan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill) is indicated for all conditions of dysphagia with acid regurgitation, belching, chest qi stagnation, chest oppression, or abdominal gas masses rushing upward causing vomiting of saliva and fluids, resembling Fanwei (Reversal Stomach). Take seventy to eighty pills per dose; if ineffective, repeat administration. (*Yangsheng Zhulun*)
Various formulas to open blockages: The fine bran from the head of a rice pounder treats sudden dysphagia. Tao Hongjing stated: In cases of sudden food impaction where swallowing is impossible, scrape off the fine bran, hold it in the mouth, and swallow it immediately (this refers to the method in *Qianjin Fang*). Ri Huazi stated: It is neutral in nature and treats dysphagia by decocting into a soup to be sipped slowly. (*Bencao*) To treat Geqi (Chest Qi Stagnation), characterized by throat obstruction and inability to swallow food or drink, take the fine bran from the top of the mortar, mix with honey to form pills the size of a bullet. At any time, hold one pill in the mouth and slowly swallow the saliva. (*Shenghui Fang*)
Formula for treating chest qi obstruction, inability to eat, and sensation of a meat-like mass in the throat.
Kunbu (Laminaria/Kelp, 2 liang, washed to remove saltiness) Xiaomai (Wheat, 2 he)
Decoct the above ingredients in three large bowls of water until the wheat is thoroughly cooked. Strain the dregs. Drink one small bowl at any time without restriction. Simultaneously, keep two or three slices of Kelp in the mouth continuously and swallow the saliva, which is extremely beneficial. (*Shenghui Fang*) (Note: Another formula for chest-diaphragm qi stagnation and food impaction uses fine bran from the pounder head, Kunbu powder, old ox saliva, and Lily bulb juice, decocted and mixed with honey to form a paste.)
Jupi Wan (Tangerine Peel Pill) for treating Wu Ge (Five Chest Obstructions) and Wu Ye (Five Dysphagias), characterized by inability to eat and emaciation.
Jupi (Aged Tangerine Peel, quantity as needed, select aged pieces, do not remove the white pith)
Grind into a fine powder, mix with crushed garlic to form a paste, and shape into pills the size of a cherry. Take one or two pills per dose, chewed and swallowed with plain boiled water, at any time. (*Jifeng*)
In severe cases of Yige (Dysphagia/Regurgitation) where even liquids cannot enter, and both medicine and food are rejected, vomiting immediately upon ingestion, sedative and descending methods should be employed. It is appropriate to administer Lingsha Dan (Cinnabar Elixir) with salt water, and simultaneously take Jiahe San (Harmony Powder) as a dry powder. (*Yaojue*)
Empirical and miraculous formula for treating Geqi.
Take one large crucian carp (must be naturally dead; live fish is ineffective). Gut the fish but retain the scales. Fill the abdominal cavity with peeled and chopped garlic. Wrap the fish tightly with several layers of wet paper, then bind with hemp rope. Coat thickly with prepared yellow clay. Sun-dry until slightly dry, then slowly roast over charcoal fire. Remove scales, bones, and spines. Mix with Pingwei San (Peaceful Stomach Powder from the Bureau Formulas) ground into fine powder, and shape into pills the size of wutong seeds. Sun-dry and store in a porcelain jar, ensuring it is airtight. Take thirty pills per dose with millet drink on an empty stomach. The effect is miraculous. (*Wanying Fang*)
Immortal Formula for Dysphagia.
Baiborsuo (White Borax, 1.5 qian), Zhen Qingdai (True Indigo Naturalis, 1 qian), Wu Jiao Chenxiang (Black Horn Agarwood, 2 qian). Grind all into a fine powder and set aside. Separately, take one sheng of white horse urine, juice from one jin of white radish, and juice from half a jin of fresh ginger. Boil these together in a copper pot until reduced to a paste. For each dose, take three tea spoons of this paste, add seven li of the aforementioned powder, and mix with plain boiled water. Take three times daily. Food passage can be cleared and eating resumed on the same day. This is truly a miraculous immortal formula. (*Huibu*)
Qige San (Open the Diaphragm Powder) is a formula that unblocks dysphagia and opens orifices, having achieved frequent success.
Shashen (Adenophora Root, 3 qian) Danshen (Salvia Miltiorrhiza Root, 3 qian) Fuling (Poria, 1 qian) Chuan Beimu (Fritillaria Cirrhosa Bulb, heart removed, 1.5 qian) Yujin (Curcuma Longa Rhizome, 0.5 qian) Sharen Qiao (Amomum Villosum Shell, 0.4 qian)
Hetidi (Lotus Leaf Stem Base, 2 pieces) Chutou Kang (Bran from Rice Pounder Head, 0.5 qian)
Decoct in water and take orally. (*Xinwu*)
Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) with one piece of Goubao (Dog Gallstone), ground into powder and taken with liquid, treats dysphagia where grains cannot be retained. (*Yitong*) (Originally from clinical records, excerpted here.)
Pugongying (Dandelion): Mr. Zheng Sheng said: Dandelions with one stem and two flowers, about one chi tall, have roots dug up to several chi deep, which are fist-sized and sometimes resemble human figures embracing. Crush and extract juice, administer with wine. It treats diaphragmatic dysphagia miraculously. (*Bencao Bei Yao*) (Note: This claim seems somewhat absurd, yet P. may theoretically help with dysphagia; thus, it is preserved for reference.)
Moxibustion Method: Regarding Wu Ge (Five Chest Obstructions), I have treated several nobles with this disease using either Jiahe San or Wuge San, or additionally moxibusting Zhongwan (CV12) and Qihai (CV6) acupoints, followed by formulas that descend qi and resolve phlegm. All were effective but did not bring rapid relief; quiet self-nourishment is required for recovery. (*Danliao*) (Note: *Jifeng Fang* has discussions on this, see the section on "Disease Caused by Qi Knotting".)
Regulation and Care Methods: Generally, this disease often arises from melancholy and irregular emotions like anger and joy. One must also guard against irritability, reduce excessive thinking and desires, and engage in diversionary activities. (*Jieti*) (Note: This originates from *Jifeng Fang*, also mentioned above.)
When spleen and stomach function slightly recover, only consume light and non-sticky foods such as millet drink, cow's milk, and chives. Do not suddenly eat pastries or sticky/greasy foods, lest they damage the stomach again. Small amounts of dried fish soup or clear beef/duck soup may be used to support stomach qi. (*Liuyao*)
