Sudden upward rushing of Qi causing panting and inability to speak, salivation with vomiting, loosening of teeth, suffocation upon deep exhalation, and recurrence of these symptoms after regaining consciousness is named Cold Damage combined with Hot Huoluan (Acute Gastroenteritis). Use Rhizoma Rhei Preparatum (Dahuang) and Radix Ginseng (Renshen) powder, half tael each. Add three cups of water, decoct until one cup remains, remove dregs, and take hot to relieve. (*Jingyan Liangfang*) [Note: This is likely a rare disease, but this formula is suitable for treating ordinary Gan Huoluan (Dry Huoluan), thus listed here.]
Drinking Therapy: *Duanju Fang* treats sudden diarrhea due to internal heat, Huoluan transforming into heat syndrome, with mental restlessness and rapid pulse.
Drink one sheng of newly drawn well water; recovery is immediate. The more the better. This treats excessive heat in the stomach. Those without heat should use caution; do not administer. (*Yixin Baojian*) Do not consume if there was prior cold in the stomach. (*Qianjin Fang*)
*Yimen Fang* treats Huoluan with incessant vomiting and diarrhea.
Boil water repeatedly, slowly add raw water, and drink warm. [Modern Note: *Shanfan Lun* states: Mix one sheng of boiled water with one sheng of raw water and drink; effective.] (*Yixin Baojian*)
If medication cannot be retained, mix half a bowl of well spring water with half a bowl of boiling water and take; effect is immediate. (*Ruyi Fang*) [Note: *Xiu zhen Fang* cites *Taiping Shenghui Fang*, now unverified.]
External Treatment: For the main symptoms described above, prepare scalding hot water in a vat, soak feet up to the knees, and place copper vessels filled with hot water on the abdomen, covering with clothes to retain heat; replace when cool. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang*) For Huoluan with muscle cramps in hands and feet, use copper or earthenware vessels with hot water for moxibustion-like warming, or have the patient step on the vessel to heat the soles thoroughly. Alternatively, pour hot water over them, replacing when cool. Water boiled with vinegar is superior; decoctions of Polygonum aviculare (Liaozi) and Fructus Evodiae (Wuzhuyu) are also good. Wrap feet in cotton wadding and old felt, pouring hot water over; the key is thorough heat penetration. (*Bencao Xinbu*) (*Yuanbing Shi* states: For various cramps, soaking in hot water opens the pores and disperses Yang Qi, leading to cure.)
*Shanfan Lun* records a formula for Huoluan cramps.
Take silk or cotton cloth, heat it warmly, and apply to the cramped area. [Case Note: *Fan Wang Fang* records that cramps wrapping around the legs extend to the abdomen; keep warm and face the fire.] (*Yixin Baojian*)
For Huoluan with cramps extending into the abdomen, when helpless:
Prepare extremely salty brine in a trough and soak warmly. (*Qianjin Fang*)
Another method: Boil green cloth in vinegar, replace when cool. (Ibid.)
*Yimen Fang* treats Huoluan cramps.
Take hot ash, mix with strong vinegar to make slightly warm, stir-fry until very hot, wrap in green cloth, and apply hot compress to the cramps while hot; replace when cool, resolving immediately. (*Yixin Baojian*)
For incessant cramps:
For men, pull the genitalia by hand; for women, pull the breasts near the sides. (*Qianjin Fang*)
Washing Method: Treats Huoluan cramps.
Take a handful of Polygonum aviculare (Liao), remove ends, boil in three sheng of water until two sheng remain, let cool to warm, and wash repeatedly. (*Jisheng Fang*)
*Meishi Fang* treats Huoluan cramps: Blowing a bean-sized amount of Gleditsia Sinensis (Zaojia) powder into the nose induces sneezing and cure. (*Bencao Gangmu* citation)
For Huoluan vomiting, diarrhea, and cramps: Grind garlic, stir-fry until cooked, and apply to the sole of the foot for cure. (*Suosui Lu*)
Salt Compress Formula: Treats Huoluan vomiting/diarrhea with heart/abdominal pain.
Stir-fry two bowls of salt, wrap in paper and gauze, place on chest and abdomen, then iron with a heated iron tool until Qi returns and consciousness is restored. Subsequently, iron the back with hot salt for complete recovery. (*Zhizhi Fang*)
Moxibustion: *Ge Shi Fang* advocates moxibustion, following order strictly, avoiding random application. Apply only corresponding to specific diseases. For Huoluan, moxa cones should not be too small, and number of moxa moxibustions (Zhuang) should not be few. Seven Zhuang is recommended; four or five Zhuang can save lives. Sleep follows extinguishing the fire. [Case Note: *Fan Wang Fang* states that for Huoluan, moxibustion may not cure immediately but prevents death; prophylactic moxibustion is essential.] (*Yixin Baojian*)
Huoluan vomiting and diarrhea require urgent treatment. Administer large doses of Laifu Dan (Revival Pill) and Zhenling Dan (Spirit-Calming Pill). Moxibustion on Shangwan (CV13), Zhongwan (CV12), Shenque (CV8), and Guanyuan (CV4) is especially indicated. Shuifen (CV9) must not be delayed, as it separates water and grain. If Zhongguan (CV12) is also moxibusted, treat Zhongguan before Shuifen. (*Zisheng Jing*)
Moxibustion for apparent death in Huoluan with warmth in abdomen: Fill umbilicus with salt, apply fourteen Zhuang of moxibustion on the salt. (*Jisheng Fang*) For severe Huoluan vomiting/diarrhea: Fill umbilicus with salt, apply one hundred Zhuang of large moxibustion. (*Wang Shi*)
Regulation/Dietary Care: *Duanju Fang* treats Huoluan with vomiting/diarrhea, cold sweat, cramps, vomiting, restlessness, and desire for cold water. Provide Nongpu Genyin (Magnolia Bark and Pueraria Drink); moisten throat only. Do not give rice drink or porridge; use this single-ingredient drink instead of food/water. (*Yixin Baojian*)
Huoluan requires gentle care; cold causes whole-body cramps. Fasting for one day is best. Eat small amounts of porridge for three days. After three days, eat freely. Rest for seven days without mixed foods to nourish Spleen Qi. (*Qianjin Fang*)
After Huoluan, do not feed early to avoid retaining pathogenic factors. New grains entering the stomach cannot be transformed, leading to danger. Caution is vital. After stability, nourish gradually with porridge until Stomach Qi recovers. (*Xuanyao Fang*)
Strictly avoid alcoholic beverages, ginger soup, garlic, dark plum, plum sauce, hot water, and all astringent/warm-tonifying herbs. (*Songya Zunsheng Quanshu*)
One formula for post-vomiting/diarrhea weak Stomach Qi and anorexia: Place aged vinegar near the nose to stimulate appetite via smell, or eat vinegar-soaked garlic with porridge. (*Shoushi Xiandan*)
