When cold and heat are intermingled or alternating, the method of dispersing is employed. When qi rebellion and sinking occur simultaneously accompanied by fright, the method of calming and regulating is used. Joy can overcome grief, and grief can be overcome by joy; for consumptive disorders, warming and tonifying methods are applied, while for shortness of breath and deficiency of qi, tonification is used; these principles are consistent.
[Annotation] Cold-pattern diseases are treated with hot-natured drugs, such as Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) and Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill). Heat-pattern diseases are treated with cold-natured drugs, such as Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) and Shengmai San (Generate the Pulse Powder). Qi stagnation and binding are treated with dispersing methods, such as Yueju Wan (Resolve Depression Pill) and Jieyu Tang (Relieve Depression Decoction). Qi rebelling upward is treated with descending methods, such as Suzi Jiangqi Tang (Perilla Seed Descending Qi Decoction). Qi sinking downward is treated with lifting methods, such as Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction). Fright and anxiety are treated with calming and spirit-settling methods, such as Zhenxin Dan (Calming the Heart Pill) and Miaoxiang San (Wonderful Fragrance Powder). Using joy to overcome grief and fear to overcome joy constitutes psychotherapy based on the mutual overcoming of emotional factors. Consumptive disorders are treated with warming and tonifying methods; shortness of breath and deficiency of qi are treated with tonification, such as Baoyuan Tang (Preserve the Origin Decoction) and Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction).

Fenxin Qi Yin (Dividing Heart Qi Drink)
Fenxin Qi Yin treats qi stagnation in the chest and abdomen caused by the seven emotions (joy, anger, worry, pensiveness, sadness, fear, fright), leading to impaired circulation. It is composed of Huoxiang Zhengqi San (Agastache Regulating the Qi Decoction) minus Baizhi and Houpo, plus Mutong, Muxiang, Xiangfu, Maidong, Guigui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae), Qingpi, Sangbai (Cortex Mori Radicis), Binglang, Zhike, and Pengzhu.
[Annotation] Fenxin Qi Yin treats chest and abdominal diseases caused by qi stagnation from the seven emotions. "Zheng" refers to Huoxiang Zhengqi San. "Zheng Jian" refers to Huoxiang Zhengqi San with Baizhi and Houpo removed, and Mutong, Muxiang, Xiangfu, Maidong, Guigui, Qingpi, Sangbai, Binglang, Zhike, and Pengzhu added.
Suzi Jiangqi Tang (Perilla Seed Descending Qi Decoction) & Yueju Tang (Resolve Depression Decoction)
Suzi Jiangqi Tang treats qi attacking upward, characterized by deficiency below and excess above, with qi and phlegm congestion, asthma, cough with salivation, chest and diaphragm fullness, constipation due to qi stagnation, and vomiting blood due to rebellious qi. It consists of Chenpi, Banxia, Rougui, Nan Su Zi (Semen Perillae), Qianhu (Radix Peucedani), Houpo, Chenxiang, Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), and Gancao. Yueju Tang treats six types of depression: food stagnation, qi stagnation, blood stasis, phlegm turbidity, dampness, and heat. It consists of Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis), Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae), Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), Xiangfu, and Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong). If qi stagnation persists for a long time, it inevitably combines with blood, phlegm, dampness, heat, fluid retention, and food. Therefore, formulas treating depression can also treat qi stagnation. For excess qi, add Muxiang; for deficient qi, add Renshen; for excess blood, add Honghua (Flos Carthami); for deficient blood, add Danggui; for excessive phlegm, add Banxia; for excessive dampness, add Baizhu; for excessive heat, add Yuzhu (Rhizoma Drynariae? Note: Text says Yu, likely referring to Evodia/Wu Zhu Yu or similar, but context implies clearing heat, possibly Yan Hu Suo or others, however standard text often cites Huanglian/Evodia pair for heat/damp. Given "Yu Lian", likely Wu Zhu Yu and Huanglian) and Huanglian (Radix Coptidis); for excessive fluid retention, add Fuling; for excessive food stagnation, add Maiya (Fructus Hordei Germinatus). Clinical judgment should guide modifications.
Siqi Tang (Four Seven Decoction)
Siqi Tang treats phlegm generated by qi stagnation from the seven emotions, manifesting as a plum-pit sensation in the throat, difficult to expectorate or swallow. This is a mild formula harmonizing qi, decocted from Banxia, Fuling, Houpo, and Zisu Ye (Folium Perillae). To promote qi movement, add Chenpi, Gancao, and Xiangfu. It is highly effective for women's qi disorders. For morning sickness (Ev Zu) in pregnant women, add Chuanxiong, Danggui, and Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba). For obese women with white complexion, prone to phlegm and qi stagnation with leukorrhea, this formula can be used to deliver Qingzhou Baiwanzi (Qingzhou White Pills).
[Annotation] Siqi Tang treats diseases arising from excessive seven emotions and seven qi pathologies, where stagnation generates phlegm. The phlegm condenses in the throat like cotton or membrane, causing the sensation of a plum pit that cannot be coughed out or swallowed. If untreated for a long time, it may transform into dysphagia (Ye Ge), presenting with vomiting saliva and difficulty in urination and defecation. This mild formula is indicated, containing Banxia, Fuling, Houpo, and Zisu Ye. For chest and abdominal qi discomfort, add Chenpi, Gancao, and Xiangfu. It also treats all qi disorders in women. Pregnant women who vomit frequently have a condition called "Ev Zu" (morning sickness); add Chuanxiong, Danggui, and Baishao. Obese women with white complexions, prone to phlegm and qi stagnation with leukorrhea, can take this formula with Qingzhou Baiwanzi.
Zhenxin Dan (Calming the Heart Pill) & Miaoxiang San (Wonderful Fragrance Powder)
For excess fright, use Zhenxin Dan, made from Cinnabaris (Zhusha) and Os Draconis (Longchi) powder mixed with pig heart blood. For deficient fright, use Miaoxiang San, composed of Muxiang, Moshe (Moschus), Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae), Fushen (Poria cum Radice Pinelli), Renshen, Gancao, Zhusha, Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis), Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae), Fuling, and Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii).

It consists of equal parts Cinnabaris (Zhusha) and Os Draconis (Longchi) powder, formed into pills the size of Coicis Semen (Yiyiren) using pig heart blood. Take three pills per dose with Maidong decoction. For heart qi deficiency causing fright, Miaoxiang San plus Shichangpu is appropriate. It consists of Muxiang, Moschus, Shanyao, Fushen, Renshen, Huangqi (Radix Astragali), Zhigancao, Zhusha, Jiegeng, Yuanzhi, Fuling, and Shichangpu.
