Mr. Li Hanqing (1892–1972) has been with us for exactly 28 years. This marks the first time that his academic experience has been comprehensively compiled and published in a dedicated volume. This compilation originated from the centennial project "Series of Clinical Chinese Medicine Experts in China over the Past Century" published by China Press of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The compilation of materials on Li Hanqing received high attention from the Shanxi Provincial Department of Health and the Shanxi Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which assigned the Institute of Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Shanxi Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine to specifically undertake and complete the task. The foundation of this compilation rests on three aspects:
First, there are a total of 277 volumes of existing materials and notes on Li Hanqing stored at the Institute of Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Shanxi Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (including the manuscript of *Clinical Experience of Using 112 Formulas from Shanghan Lun* from 1960; due to limitations in format and word count, this part appears as "Essentials," with the full book reserved for future publication). It should be noted that these materials constitute only a small portion of all the data collected by Mr. Li to complete his "Medical System of Disease-Syndrome-Formula-Medicine"; most of the materials were lost during the Cultural Revolution. At the end of the Cultural Revolution, Director Jia Dedao of the former Basic Theory Research Room instructed Mr. Chen Chongguang to specialize in organizing Mr. Li's manuscripts. After ten years of hard work resulting in manuscripts filling a foot in height, they could not be published, and the matter was halted, which is truly regrettable. It needs to be explained that Mr. Chen Chongguang conducted comprehensive and detailed classification and numbering of the Li Hanqing materials available at that time. This foundational work was crucial for possessing and mastering the materials, playing a vital role in maintaining the integrity and organization of Li Hanqing's existing materials. This precious heritage serves as the main basis for this compilation.
Second, the *Compilation of Experiences of Famous Old TCM Doctors in Shanxi*, edited by the Shanxi Provincial Department of Health in 1992, recorded the clinical experiences of 38 modern and contemporary famous TCM doctors in Shanxi, with Li Hanqing listed first, written by Zhu Jinzhong; in 1995, Zhu Jinzhong edited *Collection of Essence of Famous Doctors from the Shanxi Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine* (also known as *Collection of TCM Essentials*), which included the academic thoughts of 14 famous old TCM doctors from the Shanxi Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, with the third article titled "Li Hanqing, Internist and Creator of Non-surgical Treatment for Ectopic Pregnancy," written by Zhu Jinzhong, Ping Quanyi, and Yang Mingyi. Both books partially收录ed Mr. Li's academic thoughts and clinical experiences, but due to word count and format limitations, only a glimpse could be obtained. Although these two articles did not fully reflect the complete picture of Mr. Li's academic experience, this compilation selectively adopted valuable discussions from them, for which special explanation and gratitude to the original authors are expressed. Additionally, relevant articles written by predecessors and published in newspapers and magazines were partially cited in this compilation, but due to the long passage of time and incomplete collection, their detailed titles are temporarily not attached.
Third, situations understood and materials collected through specialized interviews with informed individuals over more than a year. Due to the generational gap, there were many inconveniences; the intricacies involved here are difficult to fully describe, but there was more selfless help and generous contribution, which we cannot forget. We list the main interview processes below:
In the afternoon of October 30, 1999, visited Chen Chongguang (visited multiple times thereafter).
In the afternoon of October 31, 1999, visited Li Yingzhen, daughter of Li Hanqing (visited multiple times thereafter).
Between 1999 and 2000, visited Li Hanqing's disciples, Chief Physician Ping Quanyi and Wang Lihua, multiple times.
Between 1999 and 2000, visited the historical witness, Mr. Ma Ningqi, multiple times.
On February 16, 2000, invited Hou Zhenmin to narrate relevant situations. According to Mr. Hou, Li Hanqing already had written materials regarding internal medicine, gynecology, and Chinese herbal medicine (internal and gynecological materials are currently unavailable). Mr. Hou also provided a handwritten copy of *Summary of Hundred Symptoms of Miscellaneous Diseases* (newly proposed title) (visited multiple times thereafter).
In the afternoon of March 9, 2000, visited An Bangyu in Beijing. An provided a registration form for the investigation of TCM apprenticeship dated April 15, 1963, indicating that An Bangyu became a disciple of Li Hanqing in 1959, focusing on internal medicine and gynecology.
On March 13, 2000, visited Jin Heyan in Beijing. Jin wrote a letter recommending a visit to Professor Yu Zaiji.
In the morning of March 15, 2000, visited Yu Shenzhong. Yu provided an internal reference "confidential" material published in December 1984 by the Science Popularization Committee of the China Association for Integrative Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, titled *Compilation of Scientific Research Achievements in Integrative Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Nationwide* (Volume 1), where the 95th paper was co-authored by Li Hanqing, Yu Zaiji, Yao Zhaoxin, and others, titled "Research on Integrative Non-surgical Methods for Treating Ectopic Pregnancy."
Between March and April 2000, visited Dr. Chen Youkui in the outpatient clinic. Chen discussed the cooperation situation of the ectopic pregnancy research group back then.
On March 21, 2000, visited Professor Yu Zaiji for the first time. Yu narrated stories about Mr. Li's life and the process of cooperation.
On April 4, 2000, visited Professor Yu Zaiji for the second time. Yu discussed the treatment of ectopic pregnancy and provided seven medical cases.
On April 18, 2000, Zhu Jinzhong provided *TCM Clinical Materials*, mimeographed in September 1974 by the TCM Teaching and Research Group of Shanxi Medical College, which included five manuscripts by Li Hanqing: *Regarding Yang Deficiency*, *My Research on Yin Deficiency Disease*, *Causes of Insomnia*, *Experience in Applying Purgatives*, and *Summary of Hundred Symptoms of Miscellaneous Diseases* (totaling 164 items).
Between June and July 2000, conducted field research in Lingqiu County, Mr. Li's ancestral home. Dr. Liu Zhiwei from the TCM Department of the County Hospital provided two books, *Lingqiu Folk Stories* and *Lingqiu County Gazetteer*, containing some materials on Li Hanqing.
On August 20, 2000, visited Dr. Han Lüqi. Han voluntarily provided the mimeographed book *Methods of Using 113 Formulas from Shanghan Lun*, internally published by the Shanxi Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine in January 1959.
On September 9, 2000, visited Zhang Cai. Zhang stated that Li Hanqing had a special manuscript on medication for Shanghan and had previously published a booklet titled "Non-surgical Treatment of Ectopic Pregnancy."
On October 10, 2000, visited Li Yingyuan, the fourth son of Li Hanqing.
On October 18, 2000, visited Mr. He Dehong, former Deputy Secretary-General of the Shanxi Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, to verify certain historical dates. Mr. He provided the *Brief Chronicle of Standing Committee Members of Previous Sessions of the Shanxi Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference*, which contains a brief introduction to Li Hanqing on page 60.
For this compilation, Li Junfeng, Director of the Shanxi Provincial Department of Health, served as Honorary Editor-in-Chief; Zhao Zhenhuan, former Director of the Shanxi Provincial Department of Health, and Qi Bingyi, Secretary-General of the Shanxi Society of Traditional Chinese Medicine, served as Advisors; Zhu Jinzhong, Honorary Director of the Institute of Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Shanxi Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Li Xianrong, Vice President of the Shanxi Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, served as Chief Reviewers; Wang Xiangli, Director of the Institute of Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Shanxi Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Zhao Tongli, President of the Shanxi Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, served as Editors-in-Chief; Qiao Lianhou, Wen Yuan, and Ren Guangrong served as Associate Editors. Specific divisions of labor are as follows: Wang Xiangli organized most miscellaneous diseases, aphorisms, and casual talks after consultations, and coordinated the entire book; Ren Guangrong organized some miscellaneous diseases and aphorisms; Wang Hongmei organized ectopic pregnancy, dampness diseases, and warm diseases; Zhao Huaizhou organized the Shanghan section; Xue Qinmei organized the gynecology section; He Xiaoming drafted the biographies of medical experts and organized some aphorisms and specific diseases; Li Tingkai organized yin deficiency and yang deficiency; Li Yingzhen was responsible for reviewing the chronology and postscript. Additionally, Dr. Xu Yimin from the Institute of Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Shanxi Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine participated in collecting some materials on Li Hanqing and copying historical photos, contributing hard work, for which special thanks are expressed.
It is necessary to explain here that regarding the drug measurement units involved in the book, except for the essentials of *Clinical Experience of Using 113 Formulas from Shanghan Lun* and descriptions of some original formulas where the original appearance is maintained, still using units such as liang, qian, and fen, all others have been uniformly converted based on one qian being equivalent to 3 grams, which conforms to Mr. Li's medication habits. Furthermore, out of respect for the original materials, drugs now prohibited such as rhino horn and tiger bone still appear in the book; readers are requested to pay attention to these drugs and note the use of substitutes in clinical practice. Looking back at the setbacks experienced over more than a year, one cannot help but feel deeply moved. In fact, this short journey of tracing back for one year condenses the karma of exactly 28 springs and autumns. I witnessed with my own eyes the silent dedication of many white-haired elders, listened with my own ears to the struggle experiences of many medical seniors, and personally felt the tragic desolation of so many right-and-wrong events. The century-long history of a famous doctor gradually became clear, the words and deeds of a wise man gradually became vivid, the flesh-and-blood sentiments of an old man gradually became full, and the ideological wisdom of a scholar gradually reappeared. Only his books and manuscripts, which he valued more than life, were lost to a large extent and not fully utilized. This is truly a regret. Although this compilation exhausted every effort to search and gathered the strength of many people, omitting details while catching the gist is inevitable. We earnestly request those who know the facts to generously offer advice, so that the learning of this school may be roughly completed. This is the postscript.
