Ding-Mao and Ding-You Years:
The upper heaven is governed by Yangming Dryness Metal (Yangming Zaojin Si Tian), the middle movement is Shaojue Wood (Shaojiao Yun), and the lower earth is governed by Shaoyin Ministerial Fire (Shaoyin Junhuo Zai Quan). This is a year of "Heavenly Punishment" (Tianxing), where Metal below controls Wood, hence it is said that "when they are not in harmony, disease occurs."
Since the annual movement (Wood) is insufficient, and the governing Dryness Metal of the upper heaven overcomes it, Metal assumes the transformation of Wood and takes control. This is referred to as the "Weihe Era" (Weihe Zhi Ji), where yang warmth is constrained, and the generating force is diminished. In Ding-Mao years, the movement aligns with its proper position, known as "Suihui" (Year Meeting). Wood movement aligns with Mao, which belongs to Wood. The disease may not be fatal but will be prolonged and slow. In Mao-You years, Taiyin Damp Earth (Taiyin Shitu) qi should descend into the earth; Shaoyin Ministerial Fire should move into position to govern the lower heaven. However, Taiyin Damp Earth, as the right intercalary qi of the previous year's governing heaven, should descend to become the left intercalary qi of the current year's governing earth. Thus, it fears the Earth Granary (Dicang), being obstructed by Wood superiority. If the previous year's Yin-Shen qi was excessive, causing Shaoyang Ministerial Fire to remain in position without retreating, then the right intercalary Taiyin Damp Earth also cannot descend. When Wood movement arrives at Ding-Mao or Ding-You years, Wood movement supports it from above, preventing descent. Yellow clouds appear, green mist shines, heat and dampness stagnate, causing strong winds, fog, and heavy dust. Damage ensues, all due to Wind-Wood overcoming Earth. Prolonged failure to descend leads to long-term stagnation of Earth qi, resulting in yellow qi in the sky and damp evaporation on the ground. Humans suffer diseases in the Spleen and Stomach. Symptoms include inability to move limbs, dizziness, joint pain, chest and abdominal fullness filling the chest. Due to insufficient Wood movement, this sector suffers. In Ding-Mao and Ding-You years, Taiyin Damp Earth should descend to govern the lower heaven, but encountering Wood movement causes it to fail to descend, forming Earth Stagnation (Tu Yu), leading to Spleen disease. Earth stagnation desires to erupt but must wait for the appropriate time. Medication should use Xiehuang San (Yellow-Draining Powder) decocted in water, cooled, and taken orally, or Wuwendan (Five Plagues Pill) ground and taken.

Gui-Mao and Gui-You Years:
The upper heaven is governed by Yangming Dryness Metal, the middle movement is Shaosheng Fire (Shaozheng Yun), and the lower earth is governed by Shaoyin Ministerial Fire. Gui years feature insufficient Yin Fire. Seeing Dryness Metal above, Metal gains control, known as the "Fuming Era" (Fuming Zhi Ji). Movement overcoming Heaven Qi is called "Buhe" (Disorder); Fire above overcomes Metal, so the disease is severe. Although miscellaneous diseases are common, there are no plague symptoms. In years of insufficiency, adding Earth Qi is called "Tong Suhui" (Same Year Meeting). In these two years, the movement aligns with the governing Earth, termed Junhuo.

Ji-Mao and Ji-You Years:
The upper heaven is governed by Yangming Dryness Metal, the middle movement is Shaogong Earth (Shaogong Yun), and the lower earth is governed by Shaoyin Ministerial Fire. Although Metal and Earth movements are harmonious, the son occupying the father's position is adverse. Movement generating Heaven Qi is called "Xiaoni" (Minor Adversity); Earth above generates Metal, so the disease is mild. In Mao-You years, Yangming Dryness Metal should move into position to govern heaven, while Taiyang Cold Water, as the right intercalary qi of the previous year's governing earth, should ascend to become the left intercalary qi of the new year's governing heaven. Thus, it fears Tianrui (Tiann Rui), being overcome by Earth. Mao-You are Yin years with qi insufficiency. Yangming governing heaven fails to move into position, and the left intercalary Taiyang does not find its place. Water desires to ascend to heaven but is suppressed by Earth movement. Ji-Mao and Ji-You are both Earth movements, years of Tianrui, which can also suppress Taiyang Cold Water, preventing ascent. Water stagnation failing to ascend leads to Kidney disease. Water stagnation causes harm, erupting when in position. Failure to ascend turns dampness into steaming heat, cold arises between the two, people suffer diarrhea and indigestion. Dampness dominates above, cold dominates below, causing such climate-induced illnesses. Long-term stagnation leads to cold overcoming heat, resulting in sudden hail. Medication should use Lianqiao Qingdai Yin (Forsythia and Indigo Decoction) decocted, with Wuwendan dissolved and taken.

Yi-Mao and Yi-You Years (Suihui, Taiyi Tianfu):
The upper heaven is governed by Yangming Dryness Metal, the middle movement is Shaoshang Metal (Shaoshang Yun), and the lower earth is governed by Shaoyin Ministerial Fire. Movement identical to Heaven Qi is called "Tianfu" (Heavenly符); both movement and governing heaven are Metal. In Mao-You years, movement aligns with its proper position, called "Suihui"; Metal movement aligns here. You belongs to Metal. The disease is critical. Yi years have insufficient Metal movement, assisted by Yangming governing heaven, known as the "Congge Era" (Congge Zhi Ji).

Xin-Mao and Xin-You Years:
The upper heaven is governed by Yangming Dryness Metal, the middle movement is Shaoyu Water (Shaoyu Yun), and the lower earth is governed by Shaoyin Ministerial Fire. Heaven Qi generating Movement is called "Shunhua" (Smooth Transformation); Metal below generates Water. In Shunhua years, people are comfortable, and diseases are few.

First Qi: Taiyin governs. Cold and damp qi prevail, causing yin condensation. Dryness Metal governs heaven, so qi is肃 (solemn/restrictive). Ice forms due to restrictive qi. Cold rain is transformed from damp earth. People suffer internal heat and bloating, facial edema, somnolence, nasal congestion/epistaxis, yawning, vomiting, yellow-red urine, and severe cases of strangury. Primary qi is Wind-Wood; secondary qi is Damp-Earth. Wind is Yang, Damp is Yin. Wind-Damp pathology injures Spleen and Kidney, causing these symptoms.

Second Qi: Yang qi spreads, people feel comfortable, flora flourishes. Shaoyang Ministerial Fire governs after the Spring Equinox, fulfilling this. Epidemic qi arrives heavily, causing sudden death. Primary qi is Ruler Fire; secondary qi is Ministerial Fire. Two fires burn intensely, minister serving ruler, thus so.

Third Qi: Heavenly administration spreads. Yangming Dryness Metal governs, so coolness prevails. However, Primary qi Ministerial Fire is in command, so dryness and heat mix. At the end of the third qi, transitioning to the fourth, Primary becomes Taiyin, Secondary becomes Taiyang, so extreme dryness yields moisture. People suffer alternating chills and fever. (Due to Yang victory, seasonal Metal-cool qi prevails.)

Fourth Qi: Cold rain descends. (Taiyang governs during Damp-Earth time.) People suffer sudden collapse, tremors, delirium, shortness of breath, dry throat with thirst, heart pain, carbuncles, sores, cold malaria, bone atrophy, and bloody stool. (After the fourth qi, Ruler Fire governs the lower heaven, but Taiyang Cold Water approaches, Water-Fire conflict causes sudden collapse, tremors, heart pain, etc.)

Fifth Qi: Spring commands reverse, grass and trees flourish. (Jueyin Wind-Wood governs, warmed by Ruler Fire of lower heaven.) People's qi is harmonious.

Final Qi: Yang qi spreads, climate warms unexpectedly, hibernating insects appear, flowing water does not freeze. Shaoyin Ruler Fire governs, hence the climate. People are healthy and peaceful, suffering warm diseases. (Transformation of Ruler Fire.) However, Dryness Metal governs heaven, so before mid-year, qi is overly收敛 (contracting), thus sweating/dispersing methods are suitable. Ruler Fire governs earth, so after mid-year, qi is overly hot, thus clearing methods are suitable.

Chen-Xu Years (Ren-Chen, Ren-Xu, Wu-Chen, Wu-Xu, Jia-Chen, Geng-Chen, Geng-Xu, Bing-Chen, Bing-Xu, Jia-Xu):
Taiyang Cold Water governs heaven, representing the cold transformation of annual qi, the qi of heaven. Taiyin Damp Earth governs earth, the qi of earth. Taiyang and Shaoyin are exterior-interior pairs, belonging to Northern Ren-Gui Water, dominating winter prosperity for 72 days. Cold Water victory allows evil to attack the Heart. Taiyang belongs to Water, transforming via cold. All yin condensation, shivering, and closure of all things are transformations of Water. Cold excess above causes cold to arrive, water freezing. If coinciding with Fire movement, Water-Fire clash causes violent rain and hail. People suffer Cold Water excess, allowing evil to attack the Heart. (Water overcomes Fire.) Thus, blood changes internally. (Heart governs blood.) Manifesting as carbuncles, sores, boils, etc. According to the *Meridian Chapter*: Heat in palms, spasm/tightness of arms/elbows, axillary swelling, chest/hypochondriac fullness, palpitations, red face, yellow eyes indicate Pericardium disease. Fire injured by cold, so all diseases originate from the Heart. Shenmen point is the hand Shaoyin Heart meridian. Located behind the palm, at the end of the sharp bone, pulsating artery felt. If Fire cannot overcome Water, Heart qi exhausts, Shenmen severs, death is incurable. Wherever pulsating qi exists, one knows the organ. (Observing presence/absence of arterial pulse reveals existence/death of organ qi.) Scale-scaled creatures share Heaven's qi, thus quiet. Shell-covered creatures share Earth's transformation, thus breeding.

Taiyin Damp Earth governs earth, the qi of earth. Grass and trees bloom early. Damp excess causes dust to fill valleys. Yellow appears black. (Yellow is Earth color, Black is Water color.) Earth wins Damp excess. People suffer fluid accumulation and heart pain. (Cold-Damp attacks Heart.) Deafness, hoarseness, swollen throat/pharynx obstruction. (Sanjiao disease.) Yin disease with bleeding, lower abdominal swelling/pain, inability to urinate. Evil damp flowing downward causes Yin deficiency Kidney disease. Disease strikes head like bursting, eyes like falling out, neck like pulling, waist like breaking, thighs unable to bend, popliteal fossa like knotted, calves like separated. Bladder Meridian disease. This is because Earth evil excess overcomes Water, so Kidney combining Sanjiao and Bladder diseases occur here. Shell-covered creatures belong to Earth, sharing its qi, thus breeding. Scale-scaled creatures belong to Water, controlled by it, thus failing to thrive. Damp in earth, Earth in position, thus transformation is pure/thick. Toxic dry substances do not grow.
