Translation:
Weather/Nature: Yang Qi retreats, Yin Qi suddenly rises to excess, severe cold arrives, rivers and marshes freeze solid, cold condenses into frost and snow. In severe cases, the sky becomes yellowish-black and dimly obscured, the circulating Qi interacts in conflict, causing frost to kill vegetation, water manifestations show omens, sunlight fails to function, heavy Yin accumulates in the void, white dust and haze obscure visibility, thus the pathogenic factor erupts. This Qi occurs before and after the periods of Ministerial Fire and Sovereign Fire. Sovereign Fire corresponds to the Second Qi, and Ministerial Fire to the Third Qi; from the Spring Equinox (February) until the Minor Heat solar term (June), totaling 120 days, these are all governed by these two fires. Water naturally prospers in winter, but due to Qi stagnation, it erupts during the time when fire commands prevail, representing Yin encroaching upon Yang.
People's Diseases: Cold invading causes heart pain, (because Heart Fire fears Water.) lower back pain, (Cold enters the Kidney.) joint stiffness and difficulty in flexion and extension, (Cold causes Qi and Blood stagnation, leading to tendon and vessel tension.) frequent cold limbs and reversal, chest fullness with hardness and abdominal distension. (Yin Qi is excessive, preventing Yang Qi from moving.)
Treatment Method: For Water Stagnation (Shui Yu), one should employ "Zhe" (Restriction/Modulation). "Zhe" means modulation or regulation. All diseases of Water Stagnation belong to the categories of Cold and Water. The root of Water lies in the Kidney, its branch manifestation in the Lung, its injury affects the Yang aspect, and its counter-acting influence involves the Spleen and Stomach. Water nature tends to flow, so one must guard against overflow. Methods of "Zhe" include: nourishing Qi to transform Water, treating the Lung; strengthening Earth to control Water, treating the Spleen; boosting Fire to overcome Water, treating the Mingmen (Gate of Life); self-strengthening to command Water, treating the Kidney; separating fluids to drain Water, treating the Bladder. All these are called "Zhe," implying more than just simple restriction.
Weather/Nature: The great void is dusty and dim, clouds and phenomena are disturbed, strong winds arrive, overturning houses and breaking trees. The sky is covered in pale yellow dust, mountains and heavens merge into one color. Sometimes turbid Qi appears yellow-black and stagnant, with horizontal clouds that do not bring rain, (although clouds are horizontal, they do not produce rain.) The Qi is unpredictable, (changing without regularity.) Grass on long rivers bends with the wind, soft leaves reveal their undersides, pines sing on high mountains, tigers roar in rocky peaks; these are precursors to the eruption of Wind Qi.
People's Diseases: Pain in the epigastrium directly behind the heart, (the Jueyin Liver meridian flanks the Stomach and pierces the Diaphragm.) upward support to both hypochondriac regions, (Liver Qi rebels upward.) obstruction in the throat and diaphragm, inability to swallow food. In severe cases, tinnitus, vertigo, blindness to people, and sudden stiff collapse. (All are diseases caused by Wind-Wood Liver pathogens.)
Treatment Method: For Wood Stagnation (Mu Yu), one should employ "Da" (Unblocking/Freeing). "Da" means smooth and unobstructed. All diseases of Wood Stagnation belong to the category of Wind. Its associated organs are the Liver and Gallbladder, its meridians traverse the hypochondrium, it governs tendons and nails, and its injury affects the Spleen, Stomach, and Blood aspect. However, Wood favors smoothness and free flow; therefore, if in the exterior, one should soothe the meridians; if in the interior, one should soothe the organs. As long as Qi circulation is restored, it is called "Da." Some schools consider emesis as "Da," but this cannot fully encompass the concept.
