In the regions of Lingnan, Fujian, and Guangdong, insects such as stream poison (Xidu), sand lice (Shashi), water crossbow (Shuinu), archer bug (Shegong), short-armed fox (Guo Duanhu), and shrimp whiskers (Xuxu) can all contain sand and shoot at people. Once poisoned by them, one experiences aversion to cold (Zenghan) and high fever (Zhuangre), with the whole body feeling as if being torn apart, resembling Taiyang disease (Taiyang Bing). At the onset, local treatment methods involve massaging the painful areas with hands, inserting a horn tube into the flesh, and sucking out the sha toxin with the mouth. Externally, garlic (roasted) is mashed into a paste and applied to seal the wound, leading to recovery. Among these insects, Xuxu (shrimp whiskers) is the most toxic; its venom penetrates deep into the bones. The lesion resembles a Ding swelling (Ding Zhong); without treatment, it is fatal. In that region, certain birds specialize in eating these insects. Therefore, consuming the feathers and feces of these birds, or keeping caged birds near the body to inhale their scent, causes the sha toxin to be expelled upon smelling the odor, resulting in recovery.
The symptoms include itching in the throat that is unbearable; drinking tea, alcohol, or soup/water becomes impossible to save. Take Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, 薄荷) (2 fen) and Shexiang (Moschus, 麝香) (1 fen), grind them into fine powder, and insufflate into the throat. Wait until the qi flows freely and about a bowl of saliva is vomited, then drink half a bowl of aged rice soup to recover.
Liu Songfeng notes: Although named Taiyang disease, this is actually a type of epidemic pestilence. Itching in the throat seems like a mild condition; however, "unbearable" implies the itch is intolerable. If so severe, how could drinking tea or water lead to incurability? Observing the phrase "wait for qi to flow," it indicates that during the itching, the qi mechanism was already severely obstructed! Tasting the mention of "vomiting a bowl of saliva," it suggests that the obstruction of qi was caused by the accumulation of saliva. This condition is very malignant and rarely seen lightly in the world.
Symptoms include distension and fullness in both hypochondriac regions, pounding pain in the heart area, or twisting intestinal pain in the abdomen, dizziness and blacking out of eyes, or blockage of urination and defecation, with stagnant qi, life hanging in the balance. Test by giving the patient cottonseed oil; if it tastes sweet and lacks an oily fishy smell, it is this condition. Quickly have the patient consume sufficient cottonseed oil, using 4-5 liang, half a jin, or even one jin, leading to immediate recovery, often accompanied by vomiting a significant amount of oil. This is a miraculous prescription.
Symptoms include headache, nausea, distending pain in both hypochondriac regions attacking the heart, inability to sit or lie down. (If the patient eats soybeans without detecting a fishy smell, it confirms this condition.) Use 12 liang of Che Tou You (vehicle axle grease), 3 qian of Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 黄连), and 3 qian of Ruxiang (Olibanum, 乳香). Grind the latter two into powder, mix thoroughly with Che Tou You, and roll into pills the size of a cockle seed (Wuzi Da), coated with Baicao Shuang (soot from burning hundred herbs). Administer seven pills with Wugen Shui (water not touched by ground/rainwater) for immediate effect. After recovery, fast for one day. Avoid raw, cold foods, and emotional anger for several days. (Che Tou You refers to the grease accumulated in the vehicle hub/bearing; dosages of 6 liang, 3 liang, or 1.5 liang are also acceptable.)
