A scholar, Wang Qingzhi, suffered from lower back pain due to a sprain. After using pain-relieving medications without improvement, his qi and blood declined daily, and his complexion turned dark. I stated: "The waist is the mansion of the Kidney. Although it is termed a sprain injury, it is actually caused by weakness in the Kidney channel." Therefore, I prescribed Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong), Psoraleae Fructus (Buguzhi), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu), Cynomorii Herba (Rongrong), and Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao) for consumption on an empty stomach; and Six Gentlemen Decoction (Liujunzi Tang) combined with Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), and Massae Fermentatae Medicinalis (Shenqu), each at two qian, taken well after meals. He recovered within less than a month.
An infant aged one to three years suffered from lower back pain due to a sprain. After taking Qi-circulating medications for half a year without improvement, I stated: "This is due to insufficient congenital Kidney qi; it is a difficult-to-treat condition." He subsequently died.
A woman injured her finger, resulting in swelling of the entire arm, slight vomiting, and poor appetite. She believed it was internal attack by toxic vapors. Upon palpation, her pulse was deep and fine. I diagnosed this as damage to Stomach qi caused by pain. I punctured the area to drain approximately one bowl of pus. Initially, I treated her with Six Gentlemen Decoction (Liujunzi Tang), Agastaches Herba (Huoxiang), and Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), which improved her appetite. Subsequently, I administered Eight Treasures Decoction (Bazhen Tang) with Astragali Radix (Huangqi), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), and Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng). The wound healed after more than a month.
(Second Case)
A man injured his toe while trimming it. The toe turned black, was painless, and appeared ready to fall off. I stated: "This is due to deficiency of Yang qi, which fails to circulate to the affected area." I urgently removed the necrotic tissue and instructed him to rapidly take tonifying agents to strengthen his Yuan qi. Otherwise, the dead flesh would spread up the leg, and he would be incurable. He did not believe me. Indeed, the black rot spread to the calf, and he died. Generally, the hands and feet are areas where qi and blood rarely reach. If sores or injuries occur there, and if the Yuan qi is damaged, the pathogenic qi will become even stronger. Ulceration spreading upward leads to death; non-ulcerated but darkened lesions also lead to death. If bones are broken but tendons and skin remain connected, the necrotic parts should be urgently excised.
A girl of several years old traveled to the capital during severe cold. Her feet became numb due to frostbite. She soaked them in hot water. By spring, all ten fingers had rotted and eventually fell off. I used formulas to support the interior and promote suppuration, assisting her Yang qi. The necrotic tissue naturally sloughed off, allowing her to survive. This occurred because Cold pathogen obstructed and cut off circulation, preventing qi and blood from reaching the extremities, compounded by soaking in hot water, causing tissue death without pain. I have observed people who go out in severe cold and suffer frostbite to ears and eyes without feeling pain. If touched by hand, the ear may detach. They should be kept in a warm place for a long time or warmed with hot hands to recover safely. However, if exposed to fire or soaked in hot water, the tissue dies and will ulcerate and fall off by spring. Northern Cold damages the human body in such ways; one must examine this carefully!
