A person accustomed to a rich diet suffered a leg injury from a fall, presenting with cyanosis, swelling, and pain. After taking acrid-warm herbs, he developed fever and wheezing, with increased pain at the injured site, dry mouth, and peeling lips. I stated: Individuals accustomed to rich diets often have accumulated internal heat. Taking acrid-warm preparations in summer further exacerbates Stomach Fire (Wei Huo), causing these symptoms. Frequent consumption of child’s urine (Tong Bian) combined with Qingwei San (Clear the Stomach Powder) added with Gardenia Fruit (Shanzhi) and Scutellaria Root (Huangqin) stopped the symptoms immediately. The injured area was treated with moxibustion using scallions (Cong Yun), leading to rapid resolution of the swelling.
Juren Du Kehong fell from a horse and took blood-invigorating herbs, which resulted in wheezing that worsened in the afternoon (Ribu). This was caused by Blood Deficiency (Xue Xu), not by blood stasis. Therefore, Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) was administered with Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Astragalus Root (Huangqi), Schisandra Fruit (Wuweizi), and Ophiopogon Tuber (Maimendong), which immediately ceased the wheezing. Subsequently, Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) added with Schisandra Fruit and Ophiopogon Tuber cured the condition. If this syndrome were indeed wheezing caused by blood stasis steaming the Lungs, only blood-invigorating methods should be used, and purgatives must be avoided. If the face is dark, chest is distended, or diaphragmatic pain causes wheezing, one ounce of Ginseng Radix and two ounces of Sappan Wood (Sumu) should be decocted together and taken urgently; delay renders it untreatable. This condition is common among postpartum women.
Academician Yang injured his finger, experiencing local pain and fever. After taking cold-natured herbs, his food intake decreased sharply, and the wound failed to suppurate. I used herbs for supporting the interior and nourishing blood, after which his appetite improved and the wound opened. Later, due to overexertion, he developed fever every afternoon (Ribu), indicating Yin Deficiency with internal heat. Treatment with Siwu Tang, Soft Bupleurum Root (Ruan Chaihu), and Cortex Lycii (Digupi) resolved the fever, followed by herbs to nourish blood and benefit qi, leading to wound contraction and healing.
A man fell from a horse and had abdominal blood stasis. He took herbs intended to purge the stasis, resulting in fever, night sweats, and spontaneous sweating, with a floating and choppy pulse. I considered this caused by heavy purgative drugs excessively damaging qi and blood. Administering Shiquan Dabu Tang (Perfect Ten Great Tonifying Decoction) worsened the condition. Occasionally, he exhibited delirious speech, which was due to the medicinal power not yet reaching the disease site. Adding five fen of Processed Aconite Root (Pao Fuzi) to the previous prescription allowed him to sleep immediately upon ingestion; upon waking, he felt significantly relieved, and recovery occurred after two more doses.
Case Two:
Da Yin Liu Guoxin suffered bleeding from a metallic wound, accompanied by fever and irritability, attributed to Yin Deficiency. Treatment with Shengyu Tang (Sage’s Rescue Decoction) extinguished the deficient fire, allowing the blood to return to its vessels.
The nephew of Grand Secretary Liang suffered from swelling, pain, and continuous bleeding due to a metallic wound, accompanied by alternating chills and fever and dry mouth. This was due to Qi Deficiency causing blood to lose its attachment, leading to blood failing to remain within the vessels. Treatment with Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) added with Schisandra Fruit and Ophiopogon Tuber restored yang qi, resulting in recovery.
