(Danggui Liu Huang Tang) treats sweating. (Sweating while awake is called spontaneous sweating, and sweating while asleep is called night sweating.) The formula consists of Baiziren (Biota Seed), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root), and Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root). [Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Huangbo (Phellodendron Bark), Huanglian, Huangqin, and the two types of Dihuang are in equal proportions, with Huangqi (Astragalus Root) doubled.] It clears fire, consolidates the exterior, and nourishes yin. (Sweating caused by yin deficiency is treated by Danggui and Dihuang to nourish yin; sweating caused by fire disturbance is treated by Huangqin, Huangbo, and Huanglian to clear fire; sweating caused by exterior deficiency is treated by doubling Huangqi to consolidate the exterior.) Adding Mahuanggen (Ephedrae Radix et Rhizoma Glabra) enhances its efficacy. (Li Shizhen stated: Mahuanggen travels to the exterior and can guide other herbs to the Wei level to consolidate the Cou Li [pores].) Some say this medicine is too bitter and cold, and it is contraindicated for those with weak stomachs or Qi deficiency.
(Ren Shen Zhu Mai Fu Mu Li Mahuang Wan) uses Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Maifuxue (Wheat Bran), Muli (Oyster Shell), and Mahuanggen. Add Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) and Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit), and take as pills made from Jujube flesh. [Baiziren (stir-fried, ground, oil removed) 2 liang, Ren Shen, Baizhu, Muli (calcined), Mahuanggen, Banxia, and Wuweizi each 1 liang, Maifuxue 5 qian, formed into pills with Jujube flesh, taken with rice water. When Heart Blood is deficient, sweating occurs immediately upon sleep; Baiziren nourishes the Heart and calms the Spirit, Muli and Maifuxue cool the Heart and astringe leakage, Wuweizi astringes sweat, Banxia dries dampness, Mahuanggen specifically travels to the muscle layer to guide Ren Shen and Baizhu to consolidate Wei Qi.]
(Huangqi Fumai Mahuang San) uses Huangqi (Astragalus Root), Fumai (Floating Wheat), and Mahuanggen. [Muli (calcined and ground), Huangqi, and Mahuanggen each 1 qian, Fumai 100 grains, decocted and taken. Muli and Fumai cool the Heart and stop sweating; Huangqi and Mahuanggen travel to the muscle layer to consolidate Wei Qi.] For external powder application, use Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) and Muli powder. (Sweat-powder method: Baizhu, Bencao (Ligusticum Sinense Rhizome), and Xiong each 2.5 qian, Nuomicu Fen (Glutinous Rice Flour) 0.5 liang, ground into fine powder, placed in bags, and applied all over the body.) Alternatively, use Longgu (Fossilized Bones) and Muli ground into powder. (Longgu and Muli ground into powder, mixed in equal parts with Nuomicu Fen, can also be used for powder application.)
(Wumei Wan)
(Zhang Zhongjing) uses Xixin (Asarum Root), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), followed by Renshen (Ginseng Root), Fuzi (Aconite Lateral Root Preparata), Huajiao (Zanthoxylum Pericarpium), and Ganjiang (Dried Ginger). Then add Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Huangbo (Phellodendron Bark), and Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root); this is a formula to warm the viscera, calm roundworms, and treat cold厥 (cold extremities). [300 Wumei (Chinese Plum Fruit) (soaked in vinegar and steamed), Xixin, Guizhi, Fuzi (prepared), Renshen, and Huangbo each 6 liang, Huanglian 1 jin, Ganjiang 10 liang, Chuanjiao (Zanthoxylum Pericarpium, de-sweated), and Danggui each 4 liang. It treats Taiyang disease Jueyin syndrome, characterized by cold extremities and vomiting roundworms. Worms subside when encountering sourness, hence Wumei is used; they settle when encountering bitterness, hence Huanglian and Huangbo are used...]
