(The Su Mi Gao Jiu recipe from *Qian Jin Fang*): Uses Yi Tang (Maltose), along with juices of Bai Bu (Stemona Root) and Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), plus Xing Ren (Apricot Seed) and Zao Rou (Jujube Flesh). Xing Ren and Zao Tonify the Spleen and moisten the Lungs; for hoarseness and Qi exhaustion, take by slowly swallowing with warm wine. [Formula: Su You (Butter), Mi Feng (Honey), Yi Tang (Maltose), Zao Rou (Jujube Flesh), Xi Yan de Xing Ren (Finely ground Apricot Seeds), Bai Bu Zhi (Juice of Stemona Root), Sheng Jiang Zhi (Juice of Fresh Ginger). Decoct together until thick like paste, and swallow slowly with warm wine.]

(Li Dongyuan's) Qing Zao Tang: Contains Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizome), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix). This is the recommended formula for treating Wei Syndrome (Flaccidity Syndrome). [Indications: Lung Metal affected by Damp-Heat pathogenic factors, presenting with flaccidity, panting, dry mouth, and dark urine. Dosage: Huang Bo 1.5 qian, Cang Zhu (stir-fried) 1 qian, Bai Zhu (stir-fried), Chen Pi, and Ze Xie each 0.5 qian, Ren Shen, Fu Ling, and Sheng Ma each 0.3 qian, Dang Gui (wine-washed), Sheng Di Huang, Mai Dong, Gan Cao (honey-fried), Shen Qu (stir-fried), Huang Bo (wine-fried), and Zhu Ling each 0.2 qian, Chai Hu and Huang Lian (stir-fried) each 0.1 qian, Wu Wei Zi 9 berries. Decoct in water. The Lung belongs to Xin Metal and governs Qi; the Large Intestine belongs to Geng Metal and governs Jin Ye (Body Fluids). When Dry Metal is invaded by Damp-Heat, the source of generation for Cold Water is cut off, leading to symptoms such as flaccidity, panting, and thirst. Ren Shen, Huang Qi (Astragalus Radix - *note: implied in context of tonifying earth*), Fu Ling, Bai Zhu, Chen Pi, and Gan Cao Tonify Earth to generate Metal; Mai Dong and Wu Wei Zi preserve Metal to generate Water; Huang Lian, Huang Bo, Dang Gui, and Sheng Di Huang purge Fire and nourish Yin; Zhu Ling, Ze Xiang, Sheng Ma, and Chai Hu ascend the Clear and descend the Turbid. Thus, Dry Metal regains its descending function, Water flows from its high source, and all diseases subside. This formula is not entirely composed of moistening herbs; because it contains the concept of "Clearing Dryness," it is recorded here. However, what Li Dongyuan meant by clearing dryness...]

(Du Ji Re Du Lei - Heat-Toxin Clearing category) Huang Lian Jie Du Tang: Consists of four ingredients: Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), and Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), in equal proportions. It is suitable for irritability, mania, high fever, vomiting, insomnia, as well as hematemesis (blood vomiting), epistaxis (nosebleed), macules/rashes, and jaundice. If referring to San Huang Shi Gao Tang (Three Yellows and Gypsum Decoction), add Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba) and Dan Dou Chi (Soja Preparata). [Used for simultaneous exterior and interior conditions]. This addresses severe heat-toxin from Shang Han (Cold Damage) or Wen Du (Warm Toxins), treating both the San Jiao (Triple Burner) exterior and interior. Zhi Zi Jin Hua Wan (Gardenia Golden Flower Pill) adds Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) to the base formula (composed of Huang Qin, Huang Bo, Huang Lian, Zhi Zi, and Da Huang, made into water pills). It moistens the intestines and purges heat, truly worthy of reliance.
