*Li Xin* states: Remove the oil ("qu han"), it is pungent and hot, used to moisten the cold of the Heart.
*Bencao* states: It governs cough and qi reversal caused by pathogenic factors, warms the middle jiao; drives out dead flesh in bones, joints, and skin, and cold-damp bi pain; descends qi, dispels cold from the six fu organs, treats shanghan and wen-nue (malaria), wind disease with inability to sweat, retained fluid in the heart and abdomen, undigested food, intestinal dysentery, seminal emission, and residual diseases after childbirth; disperses wind-pathogens, masses, edema, jaundice, ghost consumption, and gu poison, enables endurance of cold and heat, opens the cou-li (pores). [Evodia Fruit (Wuzhuyu)]
Properties and Flavor: Qi is hot, tastes pungent and bitter. Both qi and flavor are dense, belonging to yin within yang. Pungent, warm, and extremely hot. Slightly toxic.
Meridian Tropism: Enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian... [Text implies entry into the three Yin meridians of the foot based on later context].
*Zhang Xiang* states: Ingestion causes the mouth to open and eyes to stare fixedly; this is due to cold pathogen obstruction preventing qi from moving up and down. If this condition persists, it leads to cold in the middle jiao, abdominal fullness and distension, diarrhea with cold qi, which no other medicine can replace. Wash away the bitter taste, dry in the sun, pound, and use.
*Li Xin* states: Disperses rebellious qi in the chest. It should not be used in large doses, as its pungency and heat may damage primordial qi.
*Zhen* states: Warms the middle jiao, descends qi, and warms the Stomach.
*Bencao* states: It governs warming the middle jiao, descending qi, relieving pain, treating cough and qi reversal with alternating cold and heat, dispelling dampness and blood-bi; driving out wind pathogens, opening the cou-li, dispelling phlegm-cold, colic in the abdomen, various cold-solid accumulations that do not digest, zhong-e (sudden severe illness from evil qi), heart and abdominal pain, rebellious qi; benefiting the five zang organs. Enters the Foot-Taiyin, Foot-Shaoyin, and Foot-Jueyin meridians. Zhen (Thunder) and Kun (Earth) combine, its color is green.
Zhongjing (Zhang Zhongjing) states: Wuzhuyu Tang, Danggui Sini Tang, Da Wenpi Tang, and formulas for regulating the Spleen and Stomach all use this herb.
*Yanyi* states: This herb descends qi most rapidly; those with deficient intestines will suffer worsened conditions upon taking it. Polygoni Multiflori Semen (Liaoshi) acts as its guide/enforcer. It is incompatible with Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix (Danshen), Natrii Sulfas (Xiaoshi), and Kaolin (Baie). It fears Pyritum (Zishiyingshi).
