Zi Shi Ying (Purple Quartz): Nature is warm, taste is sweet and acrid, non-toxic. Enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian.
Bencao states: It primarily treats cough and qi reversal in the heart and abdomen caused by pathogenic factors, tonifies insufficiency, and treats women whose uterus has been invaded by wind-cold, resulting in infertility for ten years. It treats upper qi rebellion, heart and abdominal pain, cold-heat pathogenic factors, and stagnant qi. It tonifies insufficiency of Heart Qi, calms palpitations, stabilizes the Hun and Po souls, fills the Lower Jiao, and stops Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst syndrome). It eliminates long-standing cold in the stomach, dissipates carbuncles and swellings. It makes the complexion lustrous. Long-term use warms the Middle Jiao, lightens the body, and prolongs life. When combined with Fuling (Poria), Renshen (Ginseng), and Shaoyao (Peony Root), it jointly treats stagnant qi in the heart; when combined with Tianxiong (Aconite Lateral Root) and Changpu (Acorus), it jointly treats Huoluan (cholera-like disorder). Changshi (Long Stone) serves as its Shi (guide herb). It is incompatible with Bianqing (Blue Mineral), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root), and should not be used with Mujia (Oyster Shell), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), and Maijujiang (Bletilla Tuber).
Yanyi states: Zhang Zhongjing treated convulsions due to wind-heat using Fengyin Tang (Wind-Driving Decoction). The formula contains Zi Shi Ying (Purple Quartz), Bai Shi Ying (White Quartz), Hanshui Shi (Cold Water Stone), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root), Longchi (Dragon Bone), Muli (Oyster Shell), Gancao (Licorice Root), and Huashi (Talcum) in equal parts. The herbs are crushed, boiled in one sheng of water until reduced to one-third. After meals, take a suitable amount warm, sipping frequently. Do not discard the dregs; efficacy is immediate.
Fu Long Gan (Dragon's House Soil): Nature is warm, taste is acrid.
Shixi states: It primarily treats Benzhong (uterine bleeding) and hematemesis in women. It stops cough and qi reversal, stops bleeding, and dissipates carbuncles and swellings.
Yanyi states: To treat persistent lochia in women, take Can Sha (Silkworm Frass) one liang (stir-fried), Fu Long Gan half liang, and Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) one liang. Grind into powder, mix with warm wine, and take two or three qian on an empty stomach. Continue until bleeding stops.
Yaoxing Lun states: It can be used alone. Taste is salty. Non-toxic.
Rimazi states: Nature is hot, slightly toxic. It treats epistaxis, intestinal wind with bloody stool, leukorrhea, metrorrhagia, spermatorrhea and hematuria, induces labor and expels the placenta, and treats night crying in infants. Another theory states it treats heart pain and restlessness due to stroke. Tao Hongjing says: This is the yellow earth found under the pot in the center of the stove.
Bai Fan (Alum): Nature is cold, taste is sour. Non-toxic.
Bencao states: It primarily treats cold-heat diarrhea and dysentery, white leukorrhea resembling rice water, and malignant ulcers of the genitalia. It resolves phlegm, stops thirst, and eliminates stubborn heat. It treats throat obstruction and eye pain. It strengthens bones and teeth.
Yaoxing Lun states: Used as a guide herb, it is slightly toxic. Chew raw and swallow the saliva to treat acute Hou Bi (acute throat obstruction).
