Observe the upper and lower gums of the child. If there is a white spot, the size of a red bean, at the center of the gums directly opposite the lips, this is a sign that the disease is about to manifest. Immediately pinch the area in the exact center with fingernails, pinching from outside to inside until one full circle is completed. Slight bleeding is acceptable. Also, at both ends of the white spot, pinch in the same manner to sever the internal and external connections. (Only need to sever the qi and blood flow; do not break the skin. Keep fingernails short to avoid severe injury to the infant). Shen Cunzhong recorded: "While serving as the Inspector of Hebei, I arrived at Zhao Commandery. An elderly man offered me this method, stating that due to his advanced age, he feared the method would be lost and wished to use it to benefit people. Inquiring among the people of Zhao, they said this old man had saved over a thousand infants with his hands throughout his life. People from several surrounding counties all sought him out, and his treatments for infants were immediately effective."
