I have previously discussed that for children over ten years old, drinking alcohol and consuming hot-natured foods can cause heat to disturb the blood. Violent bending or straining after getting drunk or overly full may lead to hematemesis from the stomach region, and in severe cases, bleeding from both the nose and mouth.
This is not caused by internal or external factors, but rather by the child's own misconduct. The treatment method should first use Baijie San (Hundred-Resolution Powder) with Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) removed, added with Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), water, Congbai (Scallion White), and Dengxincao (Pith of Juncus Effusus), decocted and taken orally, to vent and drain heat toxins. Subsequently, Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) added with Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) or Oujié (Node of Rhizomatis Nelumbinis), decocted with water and Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), is used to stop vomiting and bleeding, thereby eliminating the condition.
For older children, accidental self-injury from objects, or eye trauma due to stumbling and collision during play, resulting in blood stasis, swelling, and pain that is lighter by day and heavier by night, can be quickly relieved by Shuxiao Yin (Rapid-Efficacy Drink).
Thereafter, one must avoid chicken, alcohol, mutton, and wheat noodles for three to five days to facilitate recovery.
If a fish bone or sharp object is accidentally swallowed during eating, unable to be vomited out or swallowed down, qi stagnation generates phlegm which wraps around the bone, causing internal pain and external swelling, with a hoarse cry, this is also concerning; Beiji San (Emergency-Preparation Powder) can be administered for efficacy.
Children who are playful and unruly, playing with knives or awls, or falling from heights, may suffer skin breaks and bleeding. For mild cases, Taohua San (Peach Blossom Powder) is applied externally first, followed by Huoxue San (Blood-Invigorating Powder) taken internally to harmonize the blood, preventing suppuration and muscle ulceration.
Fifteen-year-old youths, relying on their vigorous qi and blood, often engage in reckless galloping, leading to falls from horses or carriages, or limb fractures from violent fights. All types of traumatic injuries and wounds from venomous insects or fierce beasts are handled by specialized physicians in society, so they are not elaborated here.
Kangjie (Shao Yong) said: "It is better to prevent illness beforehand than to seek good medicine afterwards." However, the onset of disease always has a cause. Generally, for young children, maintaining their peace and health depends on being cautious about seasonal changes and regulating diet, leaving little else to worry about.
I often see infants and toddlers who see something they like and desire it in their hearts, but since they cannot speak, they only cry. Parents, failing to investigate the details, assume hunger or thirst, and hastily feed them milk or food, or force-feed them various flavors, which is excessive.
Some few-year-olds are spoiled and cherished too much; regardless of cold, raw, sweet, rich foods, or seasonal fruits, they are allowed to eat greedily. How can such intake be sufficient? This love actually harms them, damaging the Spleen and Stomach, leading to either vomiting or diarrhea, or developing into malnutrition syndrome (Gan Ji) with edema, transforming into strange conditions. This results from overeating.
When encountering dusk or cloudy weather, parents sometimes add thick clothes and heavy quilts, or bring the child close to red-hot stoves, holding them tightly fearing they will catch cold. Even when grown, this manner of care persists, leading to accumulated warmth turning into heat.
Extreme heat generates wind, manifesting as a red face and lips, convulsions, restlessness, and various complications. This is due to excessive warming. Little do they know that enduring a bit of hunger is better than taking spleen-regulating formulas, and enduring a bit of cold eliminates the need for exterior-releasing therapies.
Therefore, I say: For young children, food intake should not be excessive to cause harm, and clothing should not be too thick or dense; this is the method for peace and joy. Parents must reflect deeply on this.
