Although cough is divided into cold and heat types, continuous coughing is often due to the lung being affected by wind-cold; puffy eyes, excessive phlegm, and rattling sounds in the throat are often caused by playing in water while sweat is still wet.
When a child cries, feeding them sour or salty foods followed by milk, or injuring the Lung Meridian by contracting dampness from water, leading to the accumulation of wind-phlegm, requires early medical intervention.
Toxin stagnates in the Stomach and spreads through the meridians; with changes in Qi movement, sores and rashes arise. The face and lips are red, accompanied by cough and thirst, abdominal pain, and clearly cold middle fingers.
If the pustules turn black and sink, become dry, and the patient loses their voice due to cough, combined with diarrhea, extreme thirst, and incessant vomiting, along with a cool body, reduced appetite, deep lethargy, and excessive phlegm, life will surely be endangered.
Rash conditions are generally said to be caused by Stomach heat; red indicates survival and black indicates death, clearly distinguishable. If they suddenly appear on the skin like brocade patterns, this is the onset of warm toxin, starting from both flanks.
Jueyin and Shaoyin meridians are stimulated and fought by cold, causing swelling and contraction, which should be treated with warm medicines. If it is swollen but not painful, it is a deficiency pattern and should be treated as such; if red and swollen, it must be resolved with cooling agents.
Wind-dampness circulates among the bone joints; pain accompanied by palpitations indicates Jing Tan (startle paralysis). If there is heavy pain in the wrists and shins, condensing into lumps resembling crane's knee (genu valgum with joint effusion), it is identified as such.
Initially originating beside the ears and neck, mild cases are often considered harmless. However, if neglected, swelling turns to pus, and after breaking open, it is named Luoli Chuang (scrofula ulcer).
Although Lin syndrome is divided into five types, one must understand each category through detailed examination. Gao Lin (paste-like urine) and Leng Lin (cold urine) share similar symptoms, while Xue Lin (blood urine) and Shi Lin (stone urine) are both generally hot patterns.
Generally, abdominal pain does not have a single cause; it is not only due to Jia masses (mobile lumps) and Pi accumulations. Classifying them item by item reveals many end-points; refer to the most detailed discussions in the treatises.
Long-standing accumulation transforms into Gan syndrome due to lack of treatment, resulting in a protruding abdomen and thin neck, becoming Dingxi Gan. Additionally, hands and feet may look like tubes, with a pale face, yellowish body, and frequent sweating.
After Ji (accumulation) transmits to Gan, it is called Dingxi Gan, further caused by improper feeding. The abdomen is large with visible blue veins, seemingly full of worms, with frequent vomiting and numerous diarrheas; urgently regulate the Spleen.
Heat from the Heart, Spleen, and Stomach steams upward, causing white tongue coating and rotting of the gum tissue at the tooth roots. Sores appear at the corners of the mouth and Chengjiang point; although different in appearance, the treatment formula is the same.
Sores appearing all over the head and forehead like leprosy can be cured using Lian Qiao (Forsythia); if the whole body is eroded and ulcerated causing more distress, applying Jin Tu San (Golden Paste) brings immediate relief.
Eyes turning red within ten days of birth is due to fetal heat combined with wind; cooling Liver and Heart medicines are excellent for this. Hernia and Dou Chuang (smallpox/chickenpox) should be treated separately.
Children have weak Qi and thin skin; when heat-toxin attacks due to deficiency, it is urgent to resolve toxicity and dispel wind. Only when the toxin scatters and wind disappears can peace and health be restored.
