Since ancient times, Shan Qi (Hernia) has been primarily associated with the Jueyin Liver Meridian (Jueyin Gan Jing), while the Kidney region is generally not involved. The etiology often involves food stagnation, damp-phlegm, and cold pathogen constraint. Predecessors categorized it into seven types for observation. Zhitong Yinzi (Pain-Relieving Decoction) is considered the most precise and effective.
Wuling Fang is another formula name, composed of Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Fu Ling (Poria), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig), Bing Lang (Areca Seed), Chuan Lian Zi (Sichuan Chinaberry Fruit), Mu Tong (Akebia Caulis), Ju He (Tangerine Seed), and Xiao Hui Xiang (Fennel). Another formula contains Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Shao Yao (Peony Root), Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizome), Dang Gui Shen (Angelica Sinensis Root Body), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), Ba Ji Tian (Morinda Officinalis Root), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Xiao Hui Xiang (Fennel), and Ba Jiao Hui Xiang (Star Anise).
Xiang Su San (See Shang Han Lun): Add Xiao Hui Xiang (Fennel), Mu Xiang (Costus Root), San Leng (Burreed Tuber), Peng Zhu (Curcuma Zedoaria Rhizome), and Mu Tong (Akebia Caulis) to Xiang Su San. It treats Pian Zhui (Unilateral Testicular Swelling/Hydrocele). It is highly effective in the early stages when accompanied by chills, fever, and severe pain.
Single Prescriptions:
Treating Shan Qi: Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit, remove stems, soak in decoction) and Zhi Ke (Aurantium Fructus, bran-fried) each 8 fen. Decoct in wine and take orally; sweating is the desired outcome.
Another Prescription:
Hu Lu Ba (Trigonella Foenum-graecum Seed), stir-fry in a copper pot, grind into powder. Take 3 qian with hot good wine on an empty stomach; recovery occurs within a few days.
Another Fumigation and Washing Prescription: Ku Shen (Sophora Root), Zi Su Ye (Perilla Leaf), Shi Chang Pu (Acorus Rhizome) each 4 liang. Boil, pour into a bottle for fumigation. Drink wine simultaneously; the hernia area will feel like needle pricking. Wash when temperature is suitable.
Treating Pian Zhui: Take one goose egg-shaped stone, heat until red-hot, place in a wine bowl, rotate seven times, and drink on an empty stomach.
Treating Kunlun Qi entering lower abdomen causing pain: Fresh Sha Shen (Glehnia Root or Adenophora Root), crush to extract juice, mix with wine, drink as much as possible.
Additional Remarks:
The Classics mention seven types of Shan Qi: Cold, Water, Sinew, Blood, Qi, Fox, and Ulcerative Shan Qi. There are many formulas, but few are effective. Using harsh purgatives like Hei Qiu (Black Morning Glory Seed/Convolvulus Seed) and Bing Lang (Areca Seed) to attack and deplete Qi is not only useless but harmful. This disease causes little harm to the body overall. When painful, take a few doses of medicine; once pain subsides, let it be.
Divine Efficacy Formula for Treating Pian Zhui and Small Intestine Qi: Da Huang (Rhubarb Root) 5 qian (roasted dry over fire), Xiang Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica Root) 2.5 qian, She Xiang (Musk) 0.5 fen, Chuan Shan Jia (Pangolin Scale) 1.5 qian (fried with yellow earth), Bai Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus) 2 qian, Ru Xiang (Frankincense) and Mo Yao (Myrrh) each 2.5 qian.
Grind all into fine powder. Use Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) decoction boiled into a paste as a binder to form pills. Divide into two doses. Take one dose every morning on an empty stomach, delivered with good wine.
Another Prescription:
Use a double-stemmed eggplant, hang it on the door frame. Look at it when entering and exiting. As the eggplant becomes moist, it dries; as it dries, it shrinks (symbolizing the reduction of swelling). It is also said: For pediatric Pian Zhui, hang a double-stemmed eggplant on the door, hold the child to look at it twice or three times daily, and drive an iron nail into it. It will subside in about ten days.
Boiled Wine Prescription for Treating Kidney-related Shan Qi: Tang Di Gen (Root of Crabapple Tree/Crabapple Root, i.e., Hawthorn Root, remove coarse bark, wash clean) 4 liang, Xiao Hui Xiang (Fennel) 1 liang (use northern variety, mix with salt water, stir-fry), Chuan Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) 5 qian, Mu Xiang (Costus Root) 3 qian, Chuan Lian Zi (Sichuan Chinaberry Fruit, remove seed, fry) 1 liang, Po Gu Zhi (Psoralea Fruit, fry) 5 qian, Qing Pi (Citrus Reticulata Green Peel, bran-fried) 3 qian. Grind into coarse powder, place in a silk bag, suspend inside a jar. Add 5 hu of unadulterated wine, seal tightly with bamboo leaves, boil for 1-2 shichen (hours), then bury in soil for 3 days. Take appropriate amount on an empty stomach.
Treating Lower Yuan Deficiency leading to Pian Zhui and Yu Jing (Penile) Pain: Hao Mao Shan Cang Zhu (High-quality Atractylodes Lancea from Maoshan) 6 jin. One jin soaked in old rice washing water for 3 days and nights; one jin soaked in wine for 3 days and nights, sliced and sun-dried; one jin stir-fried with half a jin of Dou Zi Qing Yan (Green Salt) until yellow, discard salt; one jin stir-fried with 4 liang Xiao Hui Xiang (Fennel) until yellow, discard fennel; one jin stir-fried with 4 liang Da Hui Xiang (Star Anise) until dark yellow-black, discard anise; one jin processed with juice from 2 jin Sang Shen Zi (Mulberry Fruit), dried after processing. Grind all into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, delivered with wine.
Treating Scrotal Pian Zhui: Mu Li (Oyster Shell, calcined) and Liang Jiang (Galangal Rhizome) each 1 liang. Grind into fine powder, mix with saliva to apply topically. After defecation, if a burning heat sensation occurs, pain will immediately subside.
