Diagnosis and Differentiation
The left Cun pulse is surging, rapid, and forceful, indicating Heart Fire blazing. The Guan pulse is wiry and surging, indicating Liver Fire excess. Both the right Cun and Guan pulses are wiry and surging, signifying that Liver Wood overacts on Xiang Huo (Ministerial Fire) and insults the Metal that should restrain it (Lung Metal).

Family Heirloom Formula for Sudden Red Eye:
Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong) 1 qian, White Peony Root (Baishao) 1 qian, Rehmannia Root Preparata (Shengdi) 1 qian, Angelica Sinensis Radix (Danggui) 1 qian, Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng) 8 fen, Schizonepeta Spike (Jingjie Sui), Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome (Ben) 8 fen, Chrysanthemum Morifolium Flower (Ganju) 1 qian, Alisma Rhizome (Zexie) 8 fen, Licorice Root (Gancao) 5 fen, Juncus Effusus Stem (Dengxin) 20 segments.
Decoct with two bowls of water until one bowl remains. Take before going to sleep.

Mingmu Liqi Yin (Brighten Eyes and Circulate Qi Decoction):
Composed of Jingjie (Schizonepeta), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome), Xixin (Asarum), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Xuan Shen (Scrophularia Root), Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), Manjingzi (Vitalis Seed), Bilibai (Tribulus Fruit), Juhua (Chrysanthemum Flower), Niubangzi (Arctium Fruit), Bohe (Mint Herb), Shijunzi (Bignonia Seed), or add Dahuang (Rhubarb Root) and Juemingzi (Cassia Seed).

Su Xiao San (Rapid Effect Powder):
Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) stir-fried with wine, Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepeta Spike), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), Bohe (Mint Herb), Manjingzi (Vitalis Seed), Niubangzi (Arctium Fruit), Baijili (Tribulus Fruit), Guiwei (Angelica Sinensis Tail), Shengdi (Rehmannia Root Preparata), Caojuemingzi (Cassia Seed), Shijueming (Abalone Shell), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Huafen (Trichosanthes Root), Digupi (Lycium Bark), Gancao (Licorice Root). Decoct in water, take after meals.
If flesh piles up on the white of the eye, it is Excess Heat in the Heart Meridian; double Huanglian and Shengdi, reduce Juhua and Niubangzi.
If small red blood vessels swell, it is Deficiency Heat in the Heart Meridian; add Fuling (Poria), Lianrou (Lotus Seed Cotyledon), Jingjie (Schizonepeta), Manjingzi (Vitalis Seed).
If there is nebula on the black pupil, it is a disease of the Liver Meridian; double Chaihu and Lianqiao.
If there is stagnant blood on the sclera, double Digupi and Huafen, reduce Bohe.
If there are red filaments on the sclera, it is Lung Heat; use Lingyangjiao (Antelope Horn) as the sovereign herb.
For pain day and night, add Fangji (Stephania Root) and Xuanshen (Scrophularia Root).
For blurred vision after fiery eye, add Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) and Lingyoucao (Herba Siegesbeckiae).

Xixin San (Wash Heart Powder):
Uses Mahuang (Ephedra Herb), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix), Shaoyao (Peony Root) to cool, Jingjie Sui (Schizonepeta Spike), Gancao (Licorice Root) in equal amounts, plus Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Bohe (Mint Herb). Decoct in water.

Xigan San (Wash Liver Powder):
Uses Bohe Ye (Mint Leaf), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Zhiren (Gardenia Fruit), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Gancao (Licorice Root). Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome) treats eye diseases with miraculous effect.

Yanggan Wan (Sheep Liver Pill):
Take fifty pills at an empty stomach with salt water.

Single Prescriptions
Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) and Xiakucao (Prunella Vulgaris Herba) each 1 liang, Fencao (Licorice Root) 5 qian. Grind into powder. Take before bed with Pine Tea. For severe fiery eye pain, three doses show effect.

Another Prescription
Wrap salt in yellow mud, bake until red hot, let cool, take the salt, grind finely, wash eyes early in the morning. This permanently cures all eye diseases.

Mingfan (Alumen), Songming (Pine Resin/Moss?) each 7 fen, Huangdou (Soybean) 7 grains (crushed).
Boil in double boiler and wash. Can dissipate swelling and redness, open nebula.

Guiwei (Angelica Sinensis Tail), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) each 4 fen, Mingfan (Alumen), Tonglv (Verdigris), Pinxiao (Mirabilite) each 2 fen.
Boil and wash, same as above.

When a nursing infant vomits roundworms, split the worm into two pieces, dry it, mix with 2 qian of finely ground Pengsha (Borax), bake on new tile until dry, grind to powder, apply to eyes to remove nebula.

Another Prescription
Treating Que Mu (Night Blindness). Yeming Sha (Bat Guano), Gafen (Clam Shell Powder) each 1 qian. Insert into a slice of male ox liver (size of three fingers), tie with hemp thread, cook together with one he of aged rice. Eat the liver on an empty stomach.

Remaining Discourse
Sudden onset of eye diseases is due to internal accumulated heat combined with external contraction of wind-cold. Cold closes the heat, forcing it upward to the orifices where it cannot vent outward, causing pain. At the initial stage, immediately use Jingfang San (Schizonepeta and Saposhnikovia Powder); when wind-cold disperses, fire-heat drains, and pain stops naturally. If cold medicines are used abruptly, mild cases lead to internal retention of heat pathogens, severe cases damage the Spleen and Stomach, both leading to ruined eyes. Bloodletting is also not advisable, as eyes rely on blood for vision; less blood leads to blurriness. Remember this, remember this.

Eye Washing Prescription: Use Sangbaipi (Mulberry Root Bark) one handful, clear water one bowl, decoct to 8/10ths. Wash according to the following dates. After one year, eyes will be bright like those of a child, getting brighter with each wash, though efficacy is unverified.
January 1st, February 7th, March 5th, April 1st, May 5th, June 7th, July 10th, August 2nd, September 1st, October 10th, November 1st, December 10th.

Another Prescription
Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) 1 qian, Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) one piece, cut into two sections. Dig a hole with a knife, insert Huanglian inside, rejoin, wrap in paper, wet with water, roast on fire to extract Huanglian. Mix with half cup of human milk and warm water, wipe several times. Will never recur.

Eyelid Ulceration: Use one red date, remove pit, insert 2 fen of Mingfan (Alumen), wrap in date flesh, encase in bread, slow-roast until cooked. Apply to eyelids. Cured in two days.

Night Blindness: Grind Xiakucao (Prunella Vulgaris Herba) finely. Cut open male pig liver, insert medicine inside, roast and eat.

Stye (Mai Li Zhong): At onset, look for red spots on the patient's back resembling mosquito bites. Rub them until they bleed with a finger; they will subside immediately.

Treating Epidemic Eye Disease (Infectious Conjunctivitis) with Wind-Eye and Tearing: Use Pixiao (Mirabilite) 6 qian, water one bowl, decoct to 7/10ths. Wait for it to cool, then wash eyes. Wash several times daily. Eyes will become bright like a child's. Decoct once daily for washing.

Another Prescription
Use Puxiao (Mirabilite).
