The pulse of pregnancy: when the Heart pulse at the Cun position of the left hand beats strongly, it is a sign of conception. The Heart governs Blood; when the Heart pulse is vigorous, Blood is abundant, thus indicating pregnancy. If the pulses at both Chi positions are vigorous and distinctly different from those at both Cun positions, this also indicates pregnancy. A pulse that is smooth and rapid like a sparrow pecking rice is also a pregnancy pulse, because the closure of the menstrual channels causes the pulse to become rapid. This reflects the fetal qi present after several months of gestation.
An ancient poem states: "A solid and large pulse on the left hand indicates a male fetus; a wiry and surging pulse on the right hand indicates a female fetus; if one Chi pulse is larger than the other, it distinguishes between male and female; a slippery and solid Mingmen pulse signifies pregnancy."
The Classics state: "When the Hand Shaoyin (Heart) pulse of a woman beats strongly, she is pregnant." "Beating" refers to the pulse moving like a bean, quivering and shaking. The Heart governs Blood; once the fetus is formed, Blood gathers to protect the fetus, so the Heart pulse may beat. However, there are cases where the pulse does not beat but pregnancy still exists. Generally, in robust women with abundant Blood, the pulse beats strongly; in weak women with deficient Blood, the pulse does not beat noticeably.
"When Yin beats and differs from Yang, it is called pregnancy." Left belongs to Yin and Right to Yang; Chi belongs to Yin and Cun to Yang; deep (Chen) belongs to Yin and superficial (Fu) belongs to Yang. "Bo" refers to the pulse striking the fingers. Because the fetus generates heat, a pulse that beats strongly at the Yin position (Chi) indicates the residence of the fetus. Furthermore, male fetuses reside on the left, and female fetuses reside on the right. Where the fetus resides, Qi and Blood gather. Consequently, the pulse becomes slippery, smooth, and vigorous; thus, a vigorous left pulse indicates a male, and a vigorous right pulse indicates a female. I have observed that when carbuncles or boils erupt on the upper body, the Cun pulse is vigorous; when they erupt on the lower body, the Chi pulse is vigorous; when they erupt on the left, the left pulse is vigorous; when they erupt on the right, the right pulse is vigorous. From this, I understood the principle of fetal residence.
Yantai San (Pregnancy Verification Powder)
If a woman's menstruation has ceased for three or four months and it is unclear whether it is a disease or pregnancy, one may use the following method for verification.
Zhen Que Nao Xiong (Eryngii Rhizoma, 1 liang) Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, whole root, 7 qian)
Grind into fine powder, divide into two doses. Decoct E-jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) thickly to make one cup of decoction, mix with wine, and take orally. After two to three shichen (4-6 hours), if movement is felt in the umbilical and abdominal region, this indicates pregnancy. Once the movement ceases, health is restored. Some ask if such testing harms the fetus? The answer is: It is safe and without worry. If there is no pregnancy and no movement occurs, the stagnant evil matter (blood stasis) will discharge naturally. If there is no sensation after one dose, decoct Hong Hua (Carthami Flos, Safflower) soup and take the next dose mixed with it; it will certainly be effective.
Tantai San (Fetal Exploration Powder)
Zao Jiao (Gleditsiae Fructus, peeled) Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, each 1 qian) Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 5 fen)
Grind into powder, mix with warm wine and take orally. If pregnant, vomiting will occur; if not pregnant, no vomiting will occur.
