Xiong stated: For postpartum restlessness and thirst, Qingxin Lianzi Yin (Clear the Heart Lotus Seed Decoction) is appropriate.
Xue stated: If the aforementioned symptoms are due to excessive blood loss causing deficient fire to flare upward, Tongzi Xiaoye (Child's Urine) or a formula composed of Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), and Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex) may be used. If there is heat due to deficient Stomach Qi, Zhuye Guizhi Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Cinnamon Twig Decoction - *Note: Text says Zhuye Gui Tang, likely referring to Zhu Ye Dang Gui Tang based on context*) should be used. If there is fever due to Blood deficiency, Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) plus Maidong and Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) should be used. If there is fever and restlessness due to Blood collapse, Danggui Buxue Tang (Angelica Sinensis Tonifying the Blood Decoction) should be used. If the Stomach Qi is weak, Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) or Qiwei Baizhu San (Seven-Ingredient Atractylodes Powder) may be used. (It is correct to use Child's Urine to treat deficient fire caused by excessive blood loss; however, using Siwu Tang to treat deficiency raises the question: will the Xiongguo (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) not cause ascending and dispersing effects? Using Baizhu for thirst caused by deficient Stomach Qi is appropriate, but using it for Blood deficiency is hard to believe. One must carefully differentiate the syndrome and prescribe medication only when both Blood deficiency and weak Stomach Qi are present; do not adhere rigidly to one method.)
A certain puerpera suffered from the aforementioned syndrome, experiencing chills in the morning and fever in the evening, with abdominal pain that did not hurt upon palpation. I considered this to be a deficiency of both Qi and Blood, and treated her with Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction). However, she instead used blood-dispelling drugs, which exacerbated her fever and restlessness. I then used Danggui Buxue Tang (Angelica Sinensis Tonifying the Blood Decoction), after which the fever and restlessness gradually subsided. Subsequently, using Bazhen Tang plus Maidong and Wuweizi, her Qi and Blood gradually recovered.
Li stated: For postpartum restlessness and thirst due to Qi deficiency, Shengmai San (Generate the Pulse Powder) should be used; for Blood deficiency, Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix) and Maidong should be used; for thirst due to combined Qi and Blood deficiency, accompanied by dizziness, weak legs, and lack of taste in food, use Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) 2 qian, Maidong 1.5 qian, Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) 0.7 qian, Tianhuafen 3 qian, Gancao (Licorice Root) 0.5 qian, decocted with Nuomi (Glutinous Rice), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus). (The dosages in this formula follow specific rules; readers should not overlook them lightly.)
Qianjin Zhuye Tang (Thousand Gold Bamboo Leaf Decoction): Treats postpartum deficient thirst and shortness of breath/lack of strength.
Zhuye (Bambusa Leaves) (3 sheng), Renshen, Fuling (Poria), Gancao (each 1 liang), Xiaomai (Tritici Fructus) (5 he), Maidong (5 liang), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Shengjiang (each 3 liang), Dazao (15 pieces).
Chop the ingredients. Boil Zhuye, Xiaomai, Shengjiang, and Dazao in 9 sheng of water first, reduce to 7 sheng, remove dregs, add remaining herbs, and boil again to obtain 2 sheng. Take 5 he per dose, three times during the day and once at night. (The True Person takes the heart of Heaven and Earth as their heart; thus, in prescribing formulas, they teach the principle of clouds moving and rain falling. This formula uses ten parts of tonifying and thirst-quenching herbs as the sovereign, and one part of diuretic and drying-blood herbs that generate thirst as the minister-assistant. Why? Perhaps because Fuling can descend the Yin Qi of Heaven, and Banxia can emit the Yang Qi of Earth. Spleen belongs to Earth; Heaven's Qi connects to Earth, and Earth receives Heaven's Qi to give birth. Thus, Shengjiang and Dazao are added to invigorate Spleen Qi, unblock stagnation, and generate fluids. The Classics state: When Qi is harmonious, life arises; when fluids and essence form together, Spirit naturally generates. This is the main idea. Did the True Person, who taught universal benevolence, not know the drawbacks of Banxia and Fuling yet still use them? Later learners may emulate or discard this; it depends on the individual.)
Zhuye Danggui Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Angelica Decoction): Treats deficient heat in the Stomach, dry mouth and thirst, and aversion to cold drinks and foods.
Zhuye (1.5 qian), Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (2 qian), Renshen, Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 1 qian), Maidong (heart removed, 0.7 qian), Gancao (roasted, 0.5 qian).
Chop and decoct in water.
Shudihuang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction): Treats persistent postpartum deficient thirst, shortness of breath, weak legs, dizziness, and lack of taste in food.
Shudihuang (washed with wine, 1.5 qian), Renshen, Maidong (heart removed, each 2 qian), Gualougen (Trichosanthis Radix) (4 qian), Gancao (roasted, 0.5 qian).
Chop into one dose, add a pinch of Nuomi, three slices of Shengjiang, and two Jujubes, decoct in water. (Using less Shudihuang and more Renshen is a brilliant method. Nuomi nourishes Yin.)
Qiwei Baizhu San (Seven-Ingredient Atractylodes Powder): Treats weakness from wind-stroke, shortness of fluids, dry mouth and thirst, or conditions caused by vomiting and diarrhea.
Renshen, Baizhu (stir-fried), Baifuling (White Poria), Gancao (roasted), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Gange (Puerariae Radix) (each 1 qian).
Chop into one dose, decoct in water. (Baizhu is suitable for treating central Qi deficiency leading to shortness of fluids, as the Stomach Qi fails to transport fluids to the Spleen. Gange, Muxiang, and Huoxiang all invigorate Spleen Qi; Muxiang is particularly suitable for children, but for postpartum patients, it must be used with discretion.)
Qingxin Lianzi Yin (Clear the Heart Lotus Seed Decoction): Treats postpartum restlessness and thirst.
Maidong (heart removed), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Gancao (roasted, each 1.5 qian), Renshen, Huangqi (honey-roasted), Baifuling, Shilianrou (Nelumbinis Plumula) (each 0.75 qian).
Another prescription adds Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix) and Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) (each 1 qian). (Named "Clear the Heart," logic dictates one should protect the Lung to generate Water and guide Fire out of the Heart to drain Heat. Examining the properties of these herbs reveals this principle. Using Yuanzhi and Shichangpu to treat restlessness may be inappropriate.)
Separately decoct 20 grains of Maidong in 2 zhong of water until reduced to 1 zheng. Cool in water, and take warm on an empty stomach. If fever is present, add Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba).
Chanbao Fang (Child Treasure Formula): Treats persistent severe postpartum thirst. (A wonderful remedy for severe thirst, also embodying the principle of tonifying Earth to generate Metal.)
Lugen (Phragmitis Rhizoma) (cut, 1 sheng), Maidong (raw, 4 liang), Gualougen, Renshen, Fuling, Gancao (each 3 liang), Dazao (20 pieces).
Boil in 9 sheng of water until reduced to 3 sheng. Divide into three doses, take all at once. Cure within four doses. Avoid Songcai (Chinese Cabbage).
Gualougen Tang (Trichosanthes Root Decoction): Treats postpartum Blood-thirst.
Gualougen (4 liang), Maidong (heart removed), Renshen (each 3 liang), Sheng Dihuang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix), Gancao (each 2 liang), Tuguagen (Melongenae Radix) (5 liang), Dazao (20 pieces).
Chop, boil in 8 sheng of water until reduced to 2.5 sheng. Divide into three doses. (Blood-thirst refers to thirst caused by Blood deficiency, hence Raw Dihuang is added. These two formulas are suitable not only for postpartum conditions but also for Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst Syndrome).)
Huangqin San (Scutellaria Powder): Treats postpartum Blood-thirst and incessant drinking.
Huangqin, Maidong (equal parts).
Chop. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct in 1 zheng of water until reduced to 0.8 zheng. Take warm at any time.
Danggui Buxue Tang (Angelica Sinensis Tonifying the Blood Decoction): Treats postpartum Blood collapse, restlessness, craving for drinks, day and night without cessation, with a洪大 (Surging-Large) yet deficient pulse, completely empty upon heavy pressure. (Originally Dongyuan's formula for treating collapsed blood; applying it to postpartum restlessness and thirst requires profound insight.)
Danggui (2 qian), Huangqi (roasted, 1 liang).
Chop into one dose, decoct in water.
Another Prescription: Treats Blood-thirst and postpartum thirst. (The following three prescriptions clear the Heart, cool Blood, and generate Blood respectively, like a mountain and water, or a zither and crane, each finding its own charm.)
Use Lianzixin (Nelumbinis Plumula) ground into fine powder, taken with rice drink, 2 qian per dose. Effective.
Another Prescription: Treats postpartum excessive bleeding, deficient restlessness, and thirst.
Use 2 qian of pure Puhuang (Typhae Pollen) powder, taken with plain boiled water. If thirst and dryness are severe, use Jinghua Shui (Well Water drawn at dawn).
Another Prescription: Treats postpartum wind-stroke with restlessness and thirst.
Use 5 he of Honghuazi (Carthami Flos seeds), slightly stir-fried and crushed. Decoct in water until concentrated, and sip slowly.
Taohua San (Peach Blossom Powder): Treats postpartum thirst without restlessness.
Xin Duanshi (New Calcined Stone), Huangdan (Minium) (5 qian).
Grind into fine powder. When thirsty, mix 1 qian with Well Water and take. (Dan is derived from Lead, contains true Water, and suppresses floating Fire, thus quenching thirst. But Duanshi is extremely drying and acrid; why use it, especially postpartum? It is said that when there is thirst without restlessness, taking 1 qian mixed with Well Water requires understanding the underlying reason.)
