Guike San (Tortoise Shell Powder) treats the failure of the pubic symphysis to open, resulting in inability to deliver.
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) (each 1 liang), Baiguiban (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis) (one piece, fried with butter), Furen Tou (Human Hair) (a handful from a woman who has borne both sons and daughters, burned until carbonized but retaining its nature).
The above are ground into powder. Each dose is 5 qian, decocted in water and taken orally. Delivery should occur within the time it takes a person to walk five li; if the fetus is dead, it will also be expelled. Tortoise shell that has been scorched may also be used.
Wujin San (Black Gold Powder) treats difficult labor or fetal death in the uterus due to febrile diseases, or due to falls, jumping from heights, sexual activity causing fright and convulsions, premature labor, violation of taboos, or vaginal bleeding preceding the expected delivery date. If lochia has ceased, the fetus may dry up and die, becoming cold and unable to expel itself. The sign is a red face and blue tongue; if the face is blue and the tongue red, the mother dies while the fetus lives; if the lips are blue and froth is vomited, both mother and fetus die. In cases of twins, one may die while the other lives, making the prognosis difficult to determine; observation at the time is necessary.
Shudihuang (Prepared Radix Rehmanniae), Zhen Puhuang (Pollen Typhae), Da Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Jiaozhi Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae), Yang Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Lactiflorae), Junjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Fencao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis) (each 1 liang), Xiao Heidou (Semen Sojae Nigrae) (4 liang), Baicaoshuang (Fuliginis Massula) (5 qian).
The above are ground into fine powder. Each dose is 2 qian, soaked in half he of rice vinegar and six or seven parts boiling water, then taken warm. If there is doubt regarding fetal viability, temporarily administer Foshe San (Buddha's Hand Powder), decocted with wine and water for two or three doses as a test. If the fetus is alive, both mother and child are safe; if the fetus is dead, it will be immediately expelled. Once fetal death is confirmed, after taking this medicine, administer Xianggui San (Fragrant Cinnamon Powder); shortly thereafter, the fetus will be expelled as if pushed out by hand. This formula is commonly used to induce labor; adding Banliang of good Huashi (Talcum), 50 Kui Zi (Semen Abutilonis), 7-8 pieces of crushed Zhaxie (Cortex Quercus variabilis), and 2 cun of Congbai (Scallion Stem), decocted in flowing water and taken with the powder, is beneficial because Huashi promotes urination, Zhaxie moves qi and expels blood, and Congbai unblocks yang qi internally; when qi is abundant and blood flows, delivery occurs.
Xianggui San (Fragrant Cinnamon Powder) expels dead fetuses.
Shexiang (Moschus) (5 fen, separately ground; another prescription uses one Dangmenzi [center of Moschus]), Guanzi Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae) (3 qian, ground into powder; another prescription uses 2 qian of Guizhi [Ramulus Cinnamomi]).
Mix evenly for one dose. Take with warm Tongbian (Child's Urine) and wine, or mixed with Scallion Decoction. (The method of administration is ingenious.) Shortly thereafter, the fetus will be expelled as if pushed out by hand. Compared to using Mercury, this formula does not damage Qi and Blood. Another prescription adds Bai Zhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae) 3 qian. Another prescription uses only 1 qian of Cinnamon Powder taken with Child's Urine, named Jiuku San (Save Suffering Powder).
Pingwei San (Peaceful Stomach Powder) treats retained dead fetus, cyanosis of fingernails, cyanosis of the tongue, abdominal distension and oppression, and a fecal odor in the mouth.
Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Lanceae) (soaked in rice washing water), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) (stir-fried with ginger juice, each 1 qian), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis) (honey-roasted, 5 fen).
Cut into coarse pieces for one dose. Decoct with one sheng of wine and one sheng of water until reduced to one sheng. Add Banxiaofen of Xiaomingpo (Natrii Sulfas) and boil for three to five boils. Take warm. The dead fetus will transform into bloody fluid and discharge. Alternatively, use only Banxiaofen of Xiaomingpo, finely ground, mixed with Tongbian (Child's Urine), and taken warm, which is also effective. Or use 2 qian mixed with flowing water. (This is the same Pingwei San, yet used to expel a dead fetus, demonstrating the infinite variability of its application. Generally, when Stomach Qi moves, the dead fetus moves on its own; adding Houpo and Xiaomingpo ensures expulsion. Wonderful, truly wonderful.)
Another Prescription: Treats fetal death in the uterus between the third and fifth months of pregnancy.
Dafuzi (Fructus Tangerinae Cum Pericarpo), Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Yubaipi (Cortex Ulmi Erythrocarpae) (each 3 liang), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (stir-fried, 1 liang), Huashi (Talcum) (7.5 qian), Qumai (Herba Diantherae), Kuizi (Semen Abutilonis) (stir-fried), Fuling (Poria), Fencao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) (each 0.5 liang).
Grind into coarse powder. Each dose is 4 qian, decocted in water and taken orally.
Qianjin Shenzao Tang (Thousand Gold Divine Creation Decoction) treats fetal disturbance and difficult labor, fetal death in the uterus, and twin pregnancies where one is dead and one is alive. Taking this causes the dead fetus to be expelled and the living fetus to remain safe. It is highly effective.
Xiezhuo (Crab Claws) (1 sheng), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis) (1 liang), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini) (3 liang). (The prescription is ingenious, and the dosages are particularly unique.)
Boil the first three ingredients in 1 dou of East-flowing water. (East-flowing water is chosen for its downward momentum; boiling first extracts the full potency.) Reduce to 3 sheng, remove dregs, then add Ejiao until dissolved. Take all at once; if unable to take all, divide into two doses. If the patient is weak, pry open the mouth and administer the medicine; life returns upon ingestion. Build the stove facing east and use reed firewood for boiling. (Reed firewood is chosen for its light and hollow nature.)
Another Prescription: Treats fetal death in the uterus where the body is dry and adheres to the back.
Kuizi (Semen Abutilonis) (1 sheng) (Note: High dosage of Kuizi is key to efficacy), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini) (2 liang).
Decoct in 5 sheng of water until reduced to 2 sheng. Take all at once. If not expelled, decoct again and take.
Another Prescription: Treats fetal death in the uterus, partial birth failure, fetus stuck against the spine, failure to deliver in grassy conditions, blood and Qi rushing upward affecting the heart, loss of facial color, impending collapse of Qi, and dried amniotic fluid causing difficult delivery.
Zhuzhi (Porci Adeps) (1 jin), Baimi (Mellis) (1 sheng), Chunjiu (Pure Wine) (2 sheng).

Grind into fine powder. Each dose is 3 qian, taken with Scallion Decoction.
Banxia Tang (Pinellia Decoction) treats retained placenta, fetal death in the uterus, faintness due to blood rushing upward, sudden heavy bleeding, and inability to deliver due to dried membranes.
Banxiaqu (Fermented Fructus Pinelliae) (1.5 liang), Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi) (peeled, 7.5 qian), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Taoren (Semen Persicae) (30 seeds, peeled, de-seeded, stir-fried).
Grind into coarse powder. First, take Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) for one or two doses. (It is ingenious to take Siwu Tang first.) Then, take 3 qian of this medicine with 3 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Rhizoma Zingiberis), decocted in water. If ineffective, subsequently take Xiatai Wan (Expel Fetus Pills).
Xiatai Wan (Expel Fetus Pills) treats difficult labor, retained placenta, malpresentation, fetal death in the uterus, and impending maternal collapse.
Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) (raw), Bailian (Rhizoma Belamcandae) (each 0.5 liang).
Grind into fine powder. Mix with drops of water to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 2-3 pills after meals with Banxia Tang, gradually increasing to 5-7 pills. (Another prescription starts with 30 pills, gradually increasing to 50.) (Excellent for difficult labor due to obesity and phlegm-dampness.)
Another Prescription: Treats abnormal labor, fetal death in the uterus, retained placenta, and critical situations during delivery.
Shetui (Exuvias Bombycis Mori) (one whole piece, burned to ash over sesame oil lamp), Shexiang (Moschus) (a small amount).
Grind into powder. Mix with half sheng of Tongbian (Child's Urine) and half sheng of wine. One dose is effective immediately.
Pili Duoming Dan (Thunderbolt Life-Seizing Pill) treats sudden Qi collapse during labor, eyes rolling back, jaw locking, black face and blue lips, saliva leaking from the anus, injury to both mother and fetus, slightly red cheeks, indicating fetal death with maternal survival.
Shetui (Exuvias Bombycis Mori) (one piece, calcined in earthenware jar), Cantui (Exuvias Pheretima) (burned, 2 qian), Nanzi Fa (Human Hair, Male) (burned to ash, 1 qian), Ruxiang (Resina Frankincense) (5 fen), Heiqian (Lithargyrum) (2.5 qian), Shuiyin (Hydrargyrum) (7.5 fen, prepared according to previous methods), Qianlima (Old Left Straw Sandal from Roadside) (take the toe part, wash clean, burn to ash, 1 qian).
Grind into powder. Bind with Pig Heart Blood into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Coat with seven pieces of Gold and Silver Leaf. Take two pills per dose, administered via retrograde flowing water, or mixed with Fulonggan (Caulis Longanae Arillus). (This is an extreme critical condition; Lithargyrum and Hydrargyrum are essential. However, do not use if symptoms are less severe.)
Xuanming San San (Xuanming Realgar Powder) treats retained dead fetus.
Nansha (Realgar) (finely ground), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (each 1 liang).
Grind extremely fine. Divide into two doses. Take with warm wine. If not expelled after walking like a heavy cart for five li, take another dose.

Grind into powder. Bind with Rice Paste into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Coat with Zhusha (Cinnabar). Take 50 pills per dose, washed down with Ruxiang Tang (Frankincense Decoction).

Qumai (Herba Diantherae) (6 liang), Tongcao (Medulla Tetrapanacis), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae) (each 3 liang), Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), Yubaipi (Cortex Ulmi Erythrocarpae) (each 4 liang).
Cut finely. Decoct in 9 sheng of water until reduced to 3 sheng. Remove dregs. Divide into three doses. Drink all at once for immediate expulsion. Another prescription omits Yubaipi and includes Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis) 4 liang, which strongly induces abortion. (Tianhuafen can also cause miscarriage.)
Yizi Shen San (One-Character Divine Powder) treats fetal death in the uterus, retained placenta, ruptured membranes preventing birth, with repeated miraculous results.
Guijiu (Rhizoma Typhonii) (can also treat "Ghost Pregnancy"). Amount unspecified. Select yellow rhizomes, remove hairs, grind into powder, rubbing with fingers until it feels like fine flour. Do not sieve. Each dose is 3 qian. Decoct in one sheng of non-ash wine until reduced to 0.8 sheng. Take orally. Delivery occurs instantly as if by divine power.
