The *Chanbao Daquan* (Comprehensive Essential Records of Obstetrics) states: Generally, childbirth has its own appointed time. Before the signs of labor appear, one must absolutely not forcibly administer drugs for inducing labor or promoting fetal descent, unless circumstances leave no other choice. It further states that one must absolutely not sit on the birthing mat too early, nor allow midwives to handle the patient recklessly. (All labor-inducing medicines must be waited until severe lower back pain occurs, the fetus turns downward, and the amniotic fluid breaks before administration.) The general principle is: use slippery agents to unblock stagnation, bitter agents to expel obstruction, aromatic agents to open orifices and drive out blood stasis; regulate Qi for Qi stagnation, and consolidate Blood for cases where the amniotic sac ruptures prematurely and the condition is critical. (Consolidating Blood is like releasing a boat from a sluice gate, which is the safest and most appropriate method.)
Zhu Danxi stated: For inducing labor, only Foshou San (Buddha's Hand Powder) should be used; it is the safest and most effective.
The *Chanbao Daquan* states: Women are governed by Blood. Only when Qi flows smoothly will Blood harmonize, and only when the fetus is secure will delivery proceed smoothly. Nowadays, families of wealth and status are overly comfortable and idle, leading to Qi stagnation and failure of the fetus to rotate. Alternatively, sexual intercourse may cause essence and Blood to gather in the uterus, both resulting in difficult labor. If abdominal pain comes and goes intermittently, it is called "Yuan Tai" (false labor). Midwives who do not understand this may probe the membranes, causing rupture of the amniotic sac and drying of the amniotic fluid, making it difficult for the fetus to turn and thus difficult to deliver. One should wait until labor pains are at their peak and the fetus presses against the birth canal before sitting on the birthing mat. If this occurs during the height of summer and syncope due to blood loss or excessive bleeding occurs, drinking clear water can resolve it. (Using water to treat syncope or bleeding is especially suitable in summer months, and harmless in others, provided it is given in small amounts.) In late winter and early spring, the delivery room should be warmed with fire, and clothing covering the lower body should be particularly warm and thick to avoid cold damaging the fetus and congealing the Blood. Washing hair and feet near the time of delivery may also lead to difficult labor.
Zhu Danxi said: Difficult labor in the world often occurs in people who are depressed and idle, specifically those living in luxury. It is rarely seen among the poor and hardworking. Ancient medical texts only discuss the Shoutai Yin (Fetus-Thinning Decoction), created for Princess Huyang, but this is not the ultimate truth. Why? Because I have seen those using this formula still experience difficulty as before. My cousin suffered greatly from difficult labor; upon becoming pregnant again, she would abort out of fear. I pitied her greatly. Observing that she was obese yet diligent in needlework, I pondered for ten days and suddenly realized: This situation is exactly opposite to that of Princess Huyang. Those living in luxury likely have Excess Qi; consuming their Qi to bring it to balance makes delivery easier. Now, since she is obese, I know her Qi is Deficient. Her prolonged sitting indicates lack of movement, meaning her Qi is even weaker. The fetus in the womb relies on the mother's Qi to move; therefore, we must tonify the mother's Qi so the fetus becomes vigorous and delivery easy. I instructed her to return when she was six or seven months pregnant. I prescribed Zisu Yin (Perilla Leaf Decoction) from the *Daquan*, adding herbs to tonify Qi, administered over dozens of doses. She delivered quickly thereafter. Subsequently, I modified this formula according to each mother's physique, constitution, and seasonal changes, with consistent success. Thus, I named the formula Dasheng San (Life-Reaching Powder).
