二经,应十二时,一日一周,与天同运,循环无端。其至也,既不宜太过而数,数则热矣;
Hu stated: In the coitus of men and women, although the substance that condenses to form the fetus relies on essence (Jing) and blood, these still belong to postnatal turbid matter. However, a spark of the primordial true one spiritual energy (Xiantian Zhenyi Lingqi), which sprouts from the stimulation of desire, miraculously merges within this process. This is what Zhu Xi referred to as "endowed at the beginning of life," and what the *Wuzhen Pian* (Awakening to Reality) describes as the "initial stage of receiving life and qi."
Superior physicians, addressing infertility in couples, emphasize essence in men and blood in women when discussing pathology. They write treatises and prescribe formulas, prioritizing tonifying the Kidney for men and regulating menstruation for women. They also incorporate theories of tonifying and moving Qi, observe the meridians and collaterals, investigate their deficiency or fullness, and treat them prudently. Only then can conception occur successfully in one attempt, ensuring that no man fails to become a father and no woman fails to become a mother.
Chen Chuliang stated: The Qi and Blood in the human body vary in deficiency, excess, cold, and heat; only through pulse diagnosis can these be known (distinguishing Qi and Blood by the floating and sunken qualities at the Cun and Chi positions). To discard pulse diagnosis and speak solely of medication is absurd. The pulses correspond to the twelve meridians and the twelve double-hours, completing one cycle daily, moving in harmony with the heavens, circulating endlessly.
The arrival of the pulse should not be too rapid and frequent; frequency indicates Heat. It should not be too slow and delayed; delay indicates Cold. It should not be overly forceful and solid; such solidity does not indicate natural sufficiency of Righteous Qi (Zhengqi), but rather that Righteous Qi is deficient while Fire Pathogens have invaded, creating a false sense of fullness. The treatment method should first disperse stagnation to eliminate the pathogen; only after the pathogen is gone can Righteous Qi be tonified.
The pulse should not be too weak and empty; emptiness signifies a deficiency of Righteous Qi and proper Blood. The treatment method should solely focus on tonifying Qi and Blood (one must distinguish between Qi deficiency and Blood deficiency; they should not be tonified indiscriminately together).
There are also cases where men and women suffer from Upper Heat and Lower Cold (where treatment timing differs for morning and evening), Exterior Excess and Interior Deficiency, yet fail to conceive. In such cases, the method is to take cooling medications for the Middle Jiao (such as Liangge San) before sleep to clear upper heat; take tonifying medications to warm the lower part every morning before eating; temporarily use ascending and dispersing medications to reach the exterior; and consume rich-flavored medications to fortify the interior.
Furthermore, in women with excessive Qi and deficient Blood, irregular cold and heat, menstrual cycles that are either early or late, and frequent leukorrhea leading to infertility, pulse diagnosis must be performed, and flexible treatments applied. The goal is to ensure both husband and wife have pulses that are peaceful and forceful, neither hot nor cold, with regulated intercourse and no reckless emission of essence. This will certainly result in childbirth, and the children will not die young. Therefore, those wishing to conceive must formulate prescriptions based on the pulse and medicate according to the disease.
