The Liver stores Blood, while the Lung governs Qi; Blood transforms into Ying (Nutritive) Qi, and Qi transforms into Wei (Defensive) Qi. When Yin and Yang are paired without discrepancy, the harmonious communication between these two organs follows a standard pattern. If Blood is deficient and Qi is hyperactive, pregnancy is definitely absent; if Blood is abundant and Qi is deficient, pregnancy should be present. A superficially weak Cun pulse, a slippery Guan pulse, and a rapid Chi pulse, with a fluid, incoming-outgoing motion resembling a sparrow pecking rice, indicate the pulse shape of a fetus, yet months of gestation may remain undetected. A rapid pulse on the left indicates a male, and a rapid pulse on the right indicates a female. Fluid and connected pulses that come and go quickly, with corresponding large Guan pulses on both hands, have been mentioned in previous general discussions. A longitudinal pulse pattern on the left hand suggests twins of males, while a transverse pattern on the right hand suggests twins of females; an inverse pulse on the left hand suggests three males, and a smooth/obedient pulse on the right hand suggests three females. When the Cun, Guan, and Chi positions all correspond, it indicates one male and one female. Sometimes, the fetus dies while the mother survives, or the mother dies while the fetus survives. If the pulses in the three positions are free-flowing and smooth, with slippery and rapid qualities appearing vigorous (Ti Ti), the condition of excess Yang and deficiency Yin becomes clear, and rebellious Qi fills the chest. A floating and large Taiyang pulse on the left indicates a male; a deep and fine Taiyin pulse on the right indicates a female. All Yang pulses relate to males, and all Yin pulses relate to females; distinct differentiation under the fingers must be recorded through prolonged palpation. If the pulses in the three positions are deep, regular, and equal without doubt, but the Chi position shows continuous movement, it confirms a true pregnant woman. "Husband overcomes Wife" corresponds to Longitudinal (Zong), where Qi spreads like mist; "Wife overcomes Husband" corresponds to Transverse (Heng), where Qi assists; "Child overcomes Mother" corresponds to Inverse (Ni), where Qi interferes; "Mother overcomes Child" corresponds to Smooth/Obedient (Shun), where Qi protects. When the fetal term is complete and the form aggregates, the body may feel feverish and the pulse chaotic, yet there is no suffering; sweating, anorexia, and frequent vomiting occur, while spirit gathers within. A slippery and rapid pulse that does not scatter indicates three months of pregnancy; a merely rapid pulse that does not scatter at five months may indicate maternal danger. A string-tight, firm, strong, and slippery pulse indicates safety; a deep, fine, and faint pulse leads to death (returning to the springs).
Shenfang Yantai San (Divine Formula for Fetal Verification Powder): For women who are two to three months pregnant, with amenorrhea, suspected pregnancy but also suspected blood stasis, accompanied by mental restlessness, alternating chills and fever, and confusion, this medicine can verify the condition. Zhen Que Nao Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong, 1 liang); Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis, used whole; if weighing 1 liang, use only 7 qian). These two ingredients are ground into fine powder and divided into two doses. Mix with a cup of strongly decocted good Ai Ye (Artemisia argyi) tea and take orally. Alternatively, mix with good wine. After waiting for three to four shichen (6-8 hours), if slight, frequent movements are felt in the umbilical and abdominal region, pregnancy is confirmed; fetal movement brings relief, ensuring safety and peace. If there is no pregnancy, there will be no movement. The stagnant evil substances will pass naturally, and the mother remains safe. If efficacy is felt after taking the medicine, decoct Hong Hua (Carthamus tinctorius) tea again to mix and take, which will surely yield miraculous effects.
Yantai Fang (Fetal Verification Prescription): For those whose menstrual flow has ceased for three months. Use Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong) ground into fine powder, mixed with strongly decocted Ai Ye (Artemisia argyi) tea, taken on an empty stomach, 2 qian per dose. If slight internal movement is felt, pregnancy is confirmed; otherwise, it is menstrual stagnation.
Ai Cu Tang (Mugwort and Vinegar Decoction): For cases where the missed period makes it unclear whether pregnancy exists, or when the number of months is insufficient for clear determination. Take half a cup of good vinegar and Ai Ye (Artemisia argyi). If subsequent abdominal turning and severe pain occur, pregnancy is present; if no pain occurs, there is no pregnancy.
Tantai San (Fetal Exploration Powder): To explore whether fetal qi exists in cases of doubt regarding pregnancy. If pregnant, vomiting occurs; if not, no vomiting. Zao Jiao (Gleditsia sinensis, peeled); Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, each 1 qian); Huang Lian (Coptis chinensis, 0.5 qian). Grind these into fine powder, prepare as one dose, and take mixed with warm wine. (Note: Zao Jiao for fetal exploration invariably causes vomiting, but caution is advised for women with weak stomachs, as they may vomit even without pregnancy.)
