Yu states: The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) records that if the pulse of the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian is markedly vigorous (the Hand-Shaoyin arterial pulse is diagnosed at Shenmen [Shenmen, HT4], located on the medial side of the transverse crease of the wrist posteriorly, opposite to the Guan position), it indicates pregnancy. This is because the Hand-Shaoyin belongs to the Heart meridian, and the Heart governs blood vessels; furthermore, the Kidney serves as the gate of the uterus and the house of the fetus. If the Kidney pulse at the Chi position (the Chi pulse is more authentic) is unceasing upon palpation, it indicates pregnancy. It is also stated that during pregnancy, in the first month, the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian nourishes the fetus; in the second month, the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian; in the third month, the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian; in the fourth month, the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian; in the fifth month, the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian; in the sixth month, the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian; in the seventh month, the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian; in the eighth month, the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian; in the ninth month, the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian; and in the tenth month, the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. Thus, each meridian nourishes for thirty days. If the corresponding meridian’s deficiency or excess is not harmonized when its designated time arrives, fetal instability occurs, potentially leading to bleeding and miscarriage. The twelve meridities of the hands and feet differ in their balance of Qi and Blood: the Foot-Jueyin and Foot-Taiyang have little Qi and much Blood; the Foot-Taiyin and Foot-Shaoyin have little Blood and much Qi; the Hand-Shaoyang has much Qi and little Blood; and the Hand-Yangming and Foot-Yangming have abundant Qi and much Blood. The method for stabilizing the fetus should be adjusted monthly according to the specific meridian, observing its Qi and Blood deficiency or excess, thereby avoiding the risk of miscarriage. If contracted wind-cold causing other symptoms, treatment should follow specific protocols accordingly. (Such treatments are all in accordance with proper methods.)
Jiegu (Zhang Yuansu) states: When treating diseases related to pregnancy and childbirth, one discusses them from the perspective of the Jueyin Meridian, as this is the source of the generation and transformation of ancestral Qi (The Jueyin Liver Wood is the beginning of Wind, hence called the source of transformation; ancestral Qi refers to innate true Qi, not grain-derived Qi. The East generates Wind, Wind generates insects, and humans are also insects, thus discussion proceeds from Jueyin Wind-Wood). Jueyin and Shaoyang are exterior-interior pairs. Therefore, in treatment, one must not damage Stomach Qi or the Upper Erjiao (Upper Triple Burner). There are three prohibitions: do not induce sweating, do not purge, and do not promote urination. Inducing sweating damages Yang Qi in the Upper Jiao; purging causes rapid pulse and disturbs Spleen Qi; promoting urination leads to loss of body fluids and dryness in the Stomach. In preparing medicines, if these three prohibitions are avoided, Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) will naturally harmonize, and chills and fever will cease. If thirst occurs, use Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction); if Qi is weak, use Huang [Decoction]; if blood stasis causes stabbing pain requiring harmonization, add Danggui (Angelica Sinensis); if abdominal pain requires relief, add Shaoyao (Peony Root). Generally, postpartum diseases due to epidemic pathogens are treated using modified Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction); miscellaneous conditions are treated using modified Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction). One should carefully examine the pulse and symptoms before application.
