Article 54: When autumn dryness pathogen is contracted, with a rapid and large pulse on the right side, indicating injury to the Qi level of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian (Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian), Sang Xing Tang (Mulberry Leaf and Apricot Seed Decoction) is the primary formula.
Predecessors have stated that among the Six Qi (Six Pathogenic Factors), only Dryness does not cause disease, which seems not entirely accurate. This opinion likely arises because the *Neijing* (Inner Canon) lacks a specific clause on "Autumn injury by Dryness." For instance, in years when Yangming governs the climate, could there be no diseases caused by Dryness Metal? Generally, the climatic conditions of Spring and Autumn are more balanced compared to the extreme cold of Winter and heat of Summer. Therefore, diseases arising from latent pathogens (Latent Pathogens) accumulated in Winter or Summer are more common, while those directly caused by the seasonal Qi itself are fewer. Diseases due to latent pathogens are severe, whereas those due to direct seasonal Qi are mild. Dryness syndromes caused directly by the seasonal Qi initially affect the Lung and Wei (Defensive) levels; thus, Sang Xing Tang is used to clear dryness from the Qi level.
Sang Xing Tang Formula (Acrid-Cool Method)
Sang Ye (Folium Mori, Mulberry Leaf) - 1 qian
Xing Ren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, Bitter Apricot Seed) - 1.5 qian
Shen Shen (Radix Glehniae, Glehnia Root) - 2 qian
Xiang Bei (Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii, Thunberg Fritillary Bulb) - 1 qian
Xiang Chi (Semen Sojae Praeparatum, Prepared Soybean) - 1 qian
Zhi Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride, Green Tangerine Peel) - 1 qian [Note: Context implies Zhi Zi Pi / Gardenia Skin, but text says Xiang Chi/Zhi Pi mix. Standard Sang Xing Tang uses Zhi Zi Pi. Text says "Zhi Pi", likely short for Zhi Zi Pi in this context or a typo for Zhi Shi? Given Sang Xing Tang composition, it is Gardenia Skin. I will translate as Gardenia Skin based on standard formula, but strictly following text "Zhi Pi" usually refers to Citrus. However, Wu Jutong's Sang Xing Tang definitely uses Zhi Zi Pi. I will assume Zhi Zi Pi (Gardenia Pericarpium) for accuracy to the formula intent, or stick to literal if ambiguous. Let's look at standard WHO terms. Actually, looking at the text "Zhi Pi", in Qing dynasty texts, sometimes abbreviations vary. But Sang Xing Tang standard is Zhi Zi Pi. I will translate as Gardenia Skin (Zhi Zi Pi) noting the potential abbreviation, or simply Gardenia Pericarpium.] -> Correction: The text says "Zhi Pi". In many editions of Wen Bing Tiao Bian, it is "Zhi Zi Pi". If the input text explicitly says "Zhi Pi", I should translate what is written, but add context if needed. However, for medical accuracy, it is Gardenia. I will use Gardenia Pericarpium (Zhi Zi Pi).
Li Pi (Pericarpium Pyri, Pear Peel) - 1 qian
Add two cups of water, decoct to obtain one cup, take all at once. For severe cases, decoct again and take. (Light/ascending herbs should not be heavily dosed; heavy dosing may overshoot the pathological site. If decocted twice to make three cups, the flavor of the second and third decoctions changes because the medicinal qi/flavor is light.)
Article 55: When dryness pathogen is contracted causing cough, Sang Ju Yin (Mulberry Leaf and Chrysanthemum Drink) is the primary formula.
This is also a light agent to rescue the Lung and Wei levels.
Sang Ju Yin Formula (See previous article)
Article 56: When dryness injures the Yin aspect of the Lung and Stomach, presenting with fever or cough, Sha Shen Mai Dong Tang (Glehnia and Ophiopogon Decoction) is the primary formula.
This condition is deeper than the previous two articles; therefore, sweet-cold herbs are used to restore body fluids (Jin Ye).
Sha Shen Mai Dong Tang (Sweet-Cold Method)
Sha Shen (Radix Glehniae, Glehnia Root) - 3 qian
Yu Zhu (Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati, Odorated Solomon's Seal Rhizome) - 2 qian
Sheng Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, Prepared Licorice Root) - 1 qian
Dong Sang Ye (Folium Mori, Mulberry Leaf) - 1.5 qian
Mai Dong (Radix Ophiopogonis, Ophiopogon Root) - 3 qian
Sheng Bian Dou (Semen Phaseoli Radiati, Mung Bean Seed) - 1.5 qian
Hua Fen (Radix Trichosanthis, Trichosanthes Root) - 1.5 qian
Add five cups of water, decoct to obtain two cups, take twice daily. For prolonged fever and chronic cough, add Gu Pi (Cortex Lycii, Wolfberry Bark) 3 qian.
Article 57: When dryness transforms into fire, obstructing the clear orifices (Clear Orifices), Qiao He Tang (Lonicera and Gardenia Decoction) is the primary formula.
Obstruction of the clear orifices includes symptoms such as tinnitus, red eyes, swollen gums, and sore throat. Qiao He Tang clears dryness-heat from the Qi level of the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner).
Qiao He Tang (Acrid-Cool Method)
Bo He (Herba Menthae, Mint Herb) - 1.5 qian
Lian Qiao (Fructus Forsythiae, Forsythia Fruit) - 1.5 qian
Sheng Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, Prepared Licorice Root) - 1 qian
Hei Zhi Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride, Green Tangerine Peel) - 1.5 qian [Note: Again, likely Zhi Zi Pi (Gardenia) given the name Qiao He Tang and function. Standard Qiao He Tang uses Zhi Zi. I will translate as Gardenia Pericarpium (Zhi Zi Pi) for clinical accuracy, assuming "Hei Zhi Pi" refers to charred gardenia skin or similar.] -> Actually, standard Qiao He Tang contains Zhi Zi. "Hei Zhi Pi" likely means Charred Gardenia Skin.
Jie Geng (Radix Platycodonis, Balloon Flower Root) - 2 qian
Lu Dou Pi (Integumentum Phaseoli Radiati, Mung Bean Skin) - 2 qian
Add two cups of water, decoct to obtain one cup, take all at once. Take two doses per day; for severe cases, three doses per day.
[Modifications] For tinnitus, add Ling Yang Jiao (Cornu Saigae Tataricae, Saiga Antelope Horn) and Ku Ding Cha (Folium Ilicis Kudingcha, Kuding Tea Leaf); for red eyes, add Xian Ju Ye (Folium Chrysanthemi, Fresh Chrysanthemum Leaf), Ku Ding Cha, and Xia Ku Cao (Spica Prunellae, Selfheal Spike); for sore throat, add Niu Bang Zi (Fructus Arctii, Burdock Fruit) and Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae, Skullcap Root).
Article 58: For various Qi stagnations, flaccidity syndromes (Wei Syndromes), wheezing, and vomiting caused by dryness, Yu Jia Yan's Qing Zao Jiu Fei Tang (Clear Dryness and Rescue the Lung Decoction) is the primary formula.
Yu Jia Yan stated: Various Qi stagnations belonging to the Lung are due to Lung dryness. Yet, ancient and modern formulas for Qi stagnation mostly use acrid-aromatic Qi-moving herbs, with none treating Lung dryness. Various flaccidity, wheezing, and vomiting syndromes belonging to the Upper Jiao are also due to Lung dryness. However, traditional methods attribute vomiting and flaccidity to Yangming (Stomach/Intestines) and wheezing to the Lung. Thus, vomiting and flaccidity are seen as Middle/Lower Jiao issues, and only wheezing as Upper Jiao. Consequently, among thousands of formulas, none address Lung dryness. Even for wheezing attributed to the Lung, treatments are either exterior-releasing or purgative, Qi-moving or Qi-descending. Rarely are moistening agents used, and when they are, they miss the key point. In summary, the *Neijing* omitted "Autumn injury by Dryness" from the Six Qi, mistaking Late Summer dampness for Autumn dryness. Later scholars dared not change this view, ignoring this pathogenic factor. Even those who knew to treat dryness used mixed and chaotic prescriptions, like shooting at flying insects without a fixed method. I now propose this formula, named Qing Zao Jiu Fei Tang, focusing primarily on Stomach Qi, as Stomach Earth is the mother of Lung Metal. Tian Men Dong (Radix Asparagi, Asparagus Root) can protect the Lung, but its bitter taste and stagnant nature may damage the Stomach and obstruct phlegm, so it is not used. Zhi Mu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae, Anemarrhena Rhizome) nourishes Kidney Water and clears Lung Metal, but is also avoided due to its bitterness. Cold and cooling drugs that descend fire are strictly contraindicated. Since Lung Metal has reached a state of dryness, only a thread of Yin remains. If bitter-cold drugs are used to descend Qi and damage the Stomach, can the patient survive? One must modify this formula to rescue Lung dryness and the resulting syndromes.
It is like watering scorched earth or extinguishing a fire; frequent administration is necessary to ensure efficacy.
Qing Zao Jiu Fei Tang Formula (Acrid-Cool Sweet-Moist Method)
Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, Gypsum) - 2.5 qian
Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, Prepared Licorice Root) - 1 qian
Shuang Sang Ye (Folium Mori, Frosted Mulberry Leaf) - 3 qian
Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng, Ginseng Root) - 0.7 qian
Xing Ren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, Bitter Apricot Seed, pounded into paste) - 0.7 qian
Hu Ma Ren (Semen Sesami Nigrum, Black Sesame Seed, fried and crushed) - 1 qian
E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini, Donkey-Hide Glue) - 0.8 qian
Mai Dong (Radix Ophiopogonis, Ophiopogon Root, heart not removed) - 2 qian
Pi Pa Ye (Folium Loquata, Loquat Leaf, hairs removed, stir-fried) - 0.6 qian
Add one bowl of water, decoct to obtain 0.6 bowls, take warm frequently in two to three divided doses. For excessive phlegm, add Bei Mu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae, Fritillary Bulb) and Gua Lou (Fructus Trichosanthis, Trichosanthes Fruit); for blood deficiency/dryness, add Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, Prepared Rehmannia Root); for severe heat, add Xi Jiao (Cornu Rhinocerotis, Rhino Horn - *Note: Substitute with Buffalo Horn/Niu Jiao in modern practice, but translate original term*), Ling Yang Jiao (Cornu Saigae Tataricae, Saiga Antelope Horn), or Niu Huang (Calculus Bovis, Calculus Bos Tauri).
