Donggua (Benincasa hispida), with a sweet and bland taste, has a neutral nature. It enters the Spleen and Lung meridians. It moistens the lungs, eliminates phlegm-heat, stops coughing, and promotes urination.
It treats wheezing due to phlegm and asthma, taken with ginger decoction. It also resolves miasma from distant regions. It further treats infantile convulsions.
──Wuben Volume 3
Dongguapi (Exocarpium Benincasae), with a sweet and bland taste, is neutral in nature and slightly cold in property. It enters the Spleen and Lung meridians. It relieves thirst, reduces phlegm, and promotes urination. Washing hemorrhoids with boiled water is effective. It is also effective for treating stroke.
(Attached Formula) Treating cough:
Dongguapi (5 qian, preferably harvested after frost) and Honey (a small amount). Decoct in water and take orally.
(Another Prescription): Dongguapi and dried eggplant root are effective for washing tinea congelation (frostbite).

Xigua (Citrullus lanatus), with a sweet taste, is cold in nature. It is non-toxic. It treats all heat syndromes, phlegm surging, and qi stagnation. It resolves summerheat, alcohol toxicity, relieves irritability, quenches thirst, and treats laryngeal obstruction and bloody dysentery.
The roots and leaves, when decocted in water, treat watery diarrhea and dysentery.
──Wuben Volume 1
Huanggua (Cucumis sativus), with a pungent and slightly bitter taste, is severely cold in nature. It stirs up cold-phlegm; those with cold stomachs who consume it may experience abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. It resolves heat-toxin from sores and tinea, and relieves irritability.
(Attached Single Prescription) Treating impetigo (yellow-water sore):
Huanggua teng (stem of Cucumis sativus, dried in shade and charred to retain properties) and Mingfan (Alumen) are ground into fine powder and applied topically to the sore, which dries up the yellow fluid. Internally, take Jiedu Tang (Detoxification Decoction).
──Wuben Volume 3 Huanggua, with a sweet, bland, and slightly bitter taste, is cold in nature and slightly toxic. It mainly clears heat, quenches thirst, and promotes urination. Excessive consumption damages yin-blood and induces sores and scabies; it should be avoided after suffering from various illnesses.
Nangua (Cucurbita moschata), also known as Maigua. With a sweet taste and neutral nature, it is slightly cold in property. It enters the Spleen and Stomach meridians, circulates horizontally through the collaterals, and separates fluids to promote urination. For those with accumulation in the stomach, consuming it causes abdominal distension and hiccups, triggers liver qi pain, and disturbs qi in those with stomach qi pain; it should not be eaten in large quantities.
Nangua, with a sweet taste and warm nature, mainly tonifies middle qi and provides relief. Excessive consumption induces foot diseases and pestilence; eating it with mutton causes qi stagnation.
