Xingye Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia divaricata var. angustifolia), acrid in taste, greatly warm in nature. It warms the middle and disperses cold qi, treating nine types of stomach qi pain, cold-induced distending pain in the chest and abdomen, cold hernia with testicular descent, and intercepts phlegmatic malaria characterized by alternating chills and fever.
(Single-herb prescription) For treating stomach qi pain, ancient formulas record its use as a single agent; now supplemented with additional uses for treating cold hernia with testicular descent pain and post-distending pain.
Formula: Xingye Fangfeng (5 qian, roasted/baked), Caoudoukou (Grains of Paradise Seed, 2 qian), Xiaohuixiang (Fennel Fruit, 2 qian, stir-fried). Pulverized into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, administered with hot Sha Jiu (Baijiu/Chinese liquor).
(Single-herb prescription) For treating facial cold-pain, chest and diaphragm qi distension, facial hardness with a sensation of obstruction, and abdominal pain. Ancient formulas used the single herb as powder, 1 qian per dose. The current annotated supplement indicates improved efficacy with the following compound formula.
Formula: Xingye Fangfeng (5 qian, roasted/baked), Xiang Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, 3 qian), Weilingxian (Radix Saposhnikoviae, 2 qian), Chi Diyu (Sanguisorbae Radix, 3 qian), Guoshanlong (likely a local name, 1 qian), Chachicao (Hedyotis diffusa or similar, 3 qian). Add one zhong of Sha Jiu (Baijiu), decoct with water, or prepare as medicinal wine.
(Single-herb prescription) For treating seven types of hernia, ancient formulas record its use as a single agent; now added to the compound usage:
Formula: Xingye Fangfeng (2 qian), Juhe Ren (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Semen, 1.5 qian, stir-fried), Sheguo Cao (Herba Siegesbeckiae or similar, 1 qian), Xiaohuixiang (Fennel Fruit, 1 qian, stir-fried), Lizhi He (Litchi Seed, 3 qian, charred/stored nature). Simmer in water, take with a few drops of Shui Jiu (watered liquor) as a guiding vehicle.
(Single-herb prescription) For treating hemibody qi pain, or hernia, or bladder qi pain.
Formula: Xingye Fangfeng (2 qian), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, 8 fen), Baitouweng (Pulsatillae Radix, 1 qian), Xiaohuixiang (Fennel Fruit, 1 qian, salt-water stir-fried), Chi Mutong (Akebiae Caulis or similar, 2 qian). Decoct in water, take with a few drops of Shui Jiu (watered liquor) as a guiding vehicle.
(Single-herb prescription) For treating all types of malaria.
Formula: Xingye Fangfeng (freshly crushed to extract juice, one zhong), taken with a point of Sha Jiu (Baijiu). Before the malaria is about to attack but has not yet started, apply the dregs wrapped well over the pulse point (cun guan). Remove only after the paroxysmal time has passed.
Zhuye Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia divaricata var. angustifolia leaves/stem), acrid in taste, warm in nature. Its physical body can drain the spleen, and its taste/nature treats wind pathogens. It unblocks the twelve meridians, leading the medicinal effect directly to the site.
── Congben Volume Upper
Zhuye Fangfeng, produced in Yunnan, is most unique, acting swiftly in treating diseases. Taste is acrid, slightly sweet, neutral in nature. Main indications include vexation and fullness, hypochondriac pain, wind-cold on the head and face, tetany and pain in the four limbs, traumatic injuries with swelling and pain, and all consumptive diseases in men. Long-term consumption tonifies the middle and benefits the spirit, and is best for treating left-sided paralysis and right-sided hemiplegia.
