Tongxian Cao (Radix Sargentodoxae), grows in wastelands and by large bodies of water. Its shape resembles iron wire, is reddish-brown and round, thick like sinew, and over one chi long. It has a sweet taste and odor. It travels to the Liver meridian. It can invigorate blood, generate blood, and nourish blood, dispersing blood stasis when taken with wine. It is specifically indicated for traumatic injuries, broken bones and severed tendons, pain in bones and sinews, expelling dampness and dispelling wind, clearing heat, and treating flaccidity with phlegm-fire. Boiled with wine and taken, it is most effective. For broken bones, applying the crushed herb to the affected area can facilitate union; for bruised areas, application also leads to healing. It can also treat carbuncle toxins. Even for chronic bone and sinew pain, taking it as a decoction brings immediate recovery.
